"slipped," or more prop erly speaiung, a r u p t u red disc, is often difficult. Sometimes it is easy. It is highly impor tant that the diagnosis b e made as cor rectly as pos- the operation is a serious one and the patient does not wani to no to all the trouble and expense if he is going to be no better. And in tfte oest 01 hands, there can be 15 per cent of poor results, with a return of the pain. Typical sometimes of a ruptured disc is the sudden onset of terrible nain. nerhaDs in the lower back and often in the sciatic nerve, on the back of one thieh. Mayo CllBle slipped disc, with a great deal of disability in my back and leg, I would like to go to a large clinic where, in the same office building, I could get consultations with a number of experts in this field. First, I would want a general exami nation, with a good x-ray study of the back. Ordinary films usually show nothing, but 'an x-ray study while air is being injected into the spin al canal may show a disc pro jecting back and pressing on nerves. Examination of the spinal fluid should then show signs of inflammation and ir ritation. I would want to be seen by an expert in arthritis, and also by an expert ortho pedist who would .check my back for strains and signs of tense muscles. Then, I would want to be checked by an ex pert neurologist who might show definite signs of injury to nerves running down to one leg. - Finally, I'd like to consult with a surgeon who has oper ated on hundreds of ruptured discs. After some, years of this he will have a sixth sense which will tell him which pa tients he should operate on and which he had better leave alone. But, as I said, even with all this careful examina tion,' n operation might not help me. Because of this pos sibility, I would probably try first a lot of physiotherapy and perhaps a strong belt.
