SPORTS Giants Hit Top Rung On Friday United Press International Nope, it's no typographical error, it was really those un believable San Francisco Giants right up there in first place after a Friday night victory over Milwaukee. They did it the hard way, too, coming from behind to beat the. Braves, 4-3, in 10 innings and knock Milwaukee off the top rung for the first time since May 12. You think New York went wild when Bobby Thomson's famous homer gave the Giants their "miracle" pennant in 1951? You should have seen how 22,984 San Francisco fans reacted when Jackie Brandt drove in the winning runs with his bases-loaded single in the 10th. The frenzied fans leaped in the air, pounded each other on the back and threw thou sands of seat covers in the air. The Giants still are a long way from home but the manner in which they won Friday night had the familiar stamp of a legitimate pennant-winner. Bruton Belts Homer Milwaukee had gone ahead in the top of the 10th when Bill Bruton hit a 370-foot homer into the. right field bleachers. But Willie , Mays led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk and advanced to third on Orlando Cepeda's single. That finished loser Bob Buhl and brought in fastbal ler Don McMahon, who walk ed Daryl Spencer to load the bases. Brandt then came through with his third hit of the game to put the Giants a half game in fron and bring Sam Jones his eighth victory. Braves Bolt Back To Win San FrancisccfllPD - The Milwaukee Braves boiled back into first place in the ' National legaue with a 4-1 victory over second place San Francisco Saturday. There lead , is half a game. Lew Burdette racked up his 11th victory of the sea son and held the Giants to five hits before a sellout crowd of 23,000 at Seals Stadium. Half of Milwau kee's runs resulted from misplays by the shaky San Francisco defense. (DPD Bug Brush, this years queen of the fillies and mares, show ed her heels Saturday to a good field of stakes horses as she won the $54,050 Ingle wood Handicap at Hollywood Park by some three lengths of open ground. The speedy C. V. Whitney four-year-old filly caught the front-running Fleet Nasrullah turning into the stretch and easily pulled away from her six rivals as Amerigo came on to finish second and How Now got up for-third. Although she carried top weight of 123 pounds, Bug Brush showed she could spot weight to every horse on the grounds except Hillsdale and still win over a distance of ground. Hillsdale, beaten last winter by the filly, sat out Saturday's race because of an impost of 132 pounds. ' Bug Brush raced the mile and a sixteenth in the excel lent time of 1:40-45 in her second race at the meeting, having won a illy contest in her first start. Rated Favorite The filly was installed as 6 5 favorite by the crowd of some 47,000 and she returned $4.60, $3.00 and $2.50 across the board. As expected, Fleet Nasrul lah with his light impost of 113 pounds went out in front at the start but Bug Brush started right after him. By the time the short field had hit the first turn, Fleet Nas rullah was three lengths in front of Bug B,rush who was another length ahead of Am erigo with How Now, Ying and Hant and Terrang fol lowing. At the far turn,. Fleet Nas- rullah's lead was cut to two and a half lengths and Bug Brush started to roll as jock ey Angel Valenzuela went af ter the. leader ridden by his brother, Ismael. By the time they hit the stretch, Bug Brush was clos ing for the lead and before the filly hit the? eighth pole, she was in front and pulling away. At the wire her margin was tnree lengths. Mounties Two Behind United Press International The Vancouver Mounties were still two games behind Sacramento Friday, thanks to a crazy hopping baseball. The ' Mounties might have moved into a tie with the Sacs had it not been for the strange bounce. They had taken a 4-3 decision over the Solons earl ier Friday night in the com pletion of a game suspended May 3. Then in the second contest, with the Mounties only a game behind the leaders, the score was knotted at 4-4 going into the eighth inning. With one out, Eddie Kazak walked. The next batter grounded out and pinch hitter Clayton Dalrymple appeared to be heading toward the same fate. He slashed a hopper down to first baseman Ray Barker that looked like an easy chance. Suddenly the ball leaped high in the air and over Barker's head. Dalrymple got a double out of it and Kazak scored what proved to be the winning run. Aussie, Vet Share Lead In Open Ste. Dorothee, Que. (DPD -' Bruce Crampton,, the surpris ing young Aussie and veteran Dow Finsterwald, the PGA champion, shared the third round lead in the 50th Cana dian Open Golf championship Saturday with 54-hole totals of 205. Finsterwald sank an eight- foot birdie putt on the final hole to post a three-under 69 and catch the strong Aussie. The leaders were 11 under for 54 holes at the end of the storm-delayed third round which was finished in rain Just a shot back of the two leaders were Masters champi on Art Wall, Jr., Pocono Man or, Pa., and Doug Ford, Para dise, Fla. Wall registered rounds of 67-69-70 while Ford had rounds of 68-69-69. Jay Hebert, playing in the. same threesome with Crampton and Finsterwald, ran into tough luck in a bunker and wound up with a two under 70 to put him two strokes behind the leaders at 207. Recovers Nicely Crampton, the 23-year-old Sydney, Australia swinger, recovered nicely after some back nine trouble. The long hitting Aussie would have been all alone after 54 holes but for some bogey problems. After making the turn in a two-under 34, he went three under with a six-foot putt and then three-putted the par-5 12th for a bogey. He lost two more strokes to regulation fegures when he bunkered his tee shot on the par-three 14th and overshot into thel rough. But he recovered beau tifully, birdieing two of the final four holes. He sank bird ie putts of 6 and 4 feet and then parred the last two holes. Finsterwald's 69 was wrought with a little luck. He started out birdieing the 580- yard par-5 first hole after his ball hit a woman fan on the elbow and bounced back on the green instead of over shooting the green. He then holed a 20-footer for his par.
