This firing by communist fighter pilots on a U.S. Navy patrol bomber over the Sea of Japan (between Japan and Korea) could be bad business. The attack was obviously deliberate. The attacking plane made several passes. It delivered repeated bursts of fire, crippling two of the en gines of our plane and putting its tail gun out of commission. It is equally obvious that our plane was on a routine mission and didn't expect an attack. Its forward guns were lacking some parts and could not be fired. That certainly wouldn't have been the case if it had been looking for trouble. T7EW people believe that Rus- sia wants an all-out war. But many well informed peo ple fear that the Soviets might BLUNDER INTO WAR be cause of a slip somewhere. An incident' such as this might result in a situation that would lead the Kremlin to go to war to save face. That is what makes this shooting incident over the Sea of Japan so seri ous. It may have been some trigger-happy red pilot. He could have been a Russian. Or he could have been a communist Chinese. Or a communist North Korean. They all have MIG fighter planes. But we can't overlook the fact 'that trigger happiness can be dan gerous. It was a trigger-happy as- sasin who murdered the Aus trian Archduke Francis Ferd inand and his wife at Sarajevo in June of 1914 and touched off World War I. r COULD have, been a deliberate provocation on the part of Russia to try us out to see how we would re act. Teamsters Eye Life Insurance San Francisco -UPD Team sters from 13 western states have threatened to set up their own life insurance bus iness if they cannot get bet ter rates on policies for mem bers. Einar Mofin, chairman of the Western Conference of Teamsters, said the member ship will vote, on the proposal at the annual meeting July 7-10. Mohn said that some 200,- 000 of the 352,000 members hold $1,000 life insurance pol icies throueh individual lo cals. He said that the insur ance companies insist that the business be transacted through a broker. "If they're going to saddle us with paying brokerage fees on millions of dollars for services we don't need, we're going to do something about it, he said. He said the members would vote on a plan adopted' by a policy commitee ana execu tive board which would put the 200,000 policies up for open bid. Earl Long, seized by deputies and committed on his wife's warrant in one of the wildest days in Louisiana's turbulent political history, was behind insane asylum bars in his home state today. Peterson said he was jailed without a regular trial, on flimsy charges. An anonymous California!, reading of the case in the papers, put up money to have him released on bail, till there can be a formal hearing. - yvoiiig Costs Soar To Record Figure Washington - (DPD - Living costs edged up to a new all time 'high in May, the govern ment reported today. Higher prices were report ed for all major categories of consumer spending, "including food, clothing, housing, medi cal care and transportation. The consumer price index, based on a 1947-49 price average of 100, rose one-tenth of a point from April to a May reading of 124.0, a new high. Hike Said Seasonal Labor Department price Chief H. E. Riley said the in crease was seasonal and that "for all practical purposes" the stability living costs over the past year has not been broken. The price index hit 123.9 in July 1958, which was a new high at that time. The department also re ported that take home pay and buying power of factory workers 'climbed to new highs last month. Take home pay averaged $81.03 for a worker with three dependents, about 9 per cent higher in .dollars and purchasing power than a year ago. Pay Boost Due : The upward trend of the price index means some 100, 000 ' aircraft manufacturing workers will get a pay boost of one cent an hour. Their wages are tied by contract to the Cost of living. Food prices rose slightly in May after declining in eight of the previous nine months. The 0.1 per cent rise stem med from higher prices for restaurant meals, fresh fruits and vegetables. Playboy Fined For. A three-judge federal court Thursday killed two of the state laws which Gov. Orval Faubus used to close the schools last year. The court also reminded the school board that it is under a Supreme Court mandate to integrate and members are enjoined from delaying or sidestepping the mandate. No Alternative "I see no alternative but to proceed with some" plan of integration," Board President Everett Tucker Jr. said when the decision was announced. Tucker called a meeting of the board Thursday afternoon but said afterward that no action was taken on the fed eral court decision. "We just kicked it around and didn't come to any defi nite conclusions," Tucker said. He 'said the board would meet again with its attorneys as soon as they have a chance to study the decision. Appeal Seen Certain Tucker said he feels cer tain that the federal court de cision will be appealed. The laws the federal court knocked out were Acts 4 and 5 in a "package" that Faubus had passed in a special ses sion of the Arkansas Legisla ture last fall. He used the same laws to keep the schools closed all term. Act 4 allowed the governor to close the schools to keep Negroes out and Act 5 allowed him to withhold public funds from closed schools. Acts Unconstitutional The new court ruling said that Act 4 is clearly uncon stitutional under the due process and equal protection clauses of the 14th Amend ment and conferred no au thority upon the governor to close the public high schools in Little Rock."
