Congress in Midst Of One of Busiest Weeks of Session Washington -IUPD- The 86th Congress is in the midst of one of its busiest legislative weeks so far this session. Both the House and Senate were pushing through legisla tion of consideration including housing, a wheat bill, a Com merce Department appropria tion, and the hotly disputed nomination of Commerce Sec retary Lewis J. Strauss. The Senate set the pace, meeting for 12 hours Wednes day in a tempestuous session. Another night session was scheduled for today. , Wheat Bill Approved Major congressional news: Wheat: The Senate at mid night shouted approval of a compromise stop-gap wheat bill designed to cut surpluses by lowering planting allot ments and boosting price sup- ;Q ports. The House wj; expect ed to quickly approve thepiea sure, a product of a. House Senate conference committee. But the proposal may run into a veto from President Eisen- bower, who objects to boost- ing price supports on wheat from 75 to 80 per cent of parity. Strauss: Supporters of Com merce Secretary Lewis ! Strauss claimed significant gains in the cloakroom tug-of-war over his Senate confirma tion. They said the number of senators committed for Strauss was close to the total which can assure confirma tion. Appropriation Vote (ear Appropriation: The Senate prepared to vote on a $715 million Commerce Depart ment appropriation b i 1 1. Wednesday night beat down an effort to trim over $1 mil lion in ship subsidies from it. The matter prompted heated debate during which SQi. John J. Williams (R-Del.) re ferred, to "Texas steam roller tactics." The statement apigv ently was a slap at Sena Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson (Tex.). Housing: Congress way mov ing toward approval of a catch-all housing bill that may not be acceptable President Eisenhower. The bill, shaping up in a Senate-House confer ence committee, would actual ly increase spending on hous ing over the next two years by about 50 per cent over levels recommended by the administration. The President has recommended a housing budget totaling $1,750,000,000. Slife GOP Chief Raps Disinterest Salem - (UPD - Republican State Chairman Peter M. Gufi- nar, saiem, weanesaay toio. a luncheon meeting "of the Sa lem Exchange Club that the "ignorance and disinterest of business and professional peo ple" in political affairs is 019 of the "strangest phenome non" in the country today. Gunnar said that business and professional people have "actually hidden their heads in the figurative sand in an attempt to deny the existence of our political life." He said the results have been "disastrous" and has en couraged the rise of the wel fare state and is "threatening the continuance of the inde pendent business and profes sional man in America." Gunnar said there is, how ever, a "stirring" among busi ness people. k "We are slowly realizing that democracy is only good when the people actively ex ercise the very political rights that democracy assures them," he said. Three in Custody For Bank Cobberf Portland-(UPD-The FBI here announced late Wednesday that three persons were taken into custody in connection with the $450 June 9 holdup of the East Side branch of the Bank of America in Stock ton, Calif. Arrested on a complaint filed in Stockton charging them with being accessories were Gilbert Duwayne Lay man, 22, both of Portland, and Kathaleen Rae McLean, 19. of St. Helens. The FBI said a fourth per son, Richard Windell Holt, was in custody in Stockton charged with the robbery. The trio arrested here ap peared before U. S. Commis sioner Claire Mundorff and bond was set at $5,000 each. Mrs. Mundorff said a removal " hearing would be held. Canada's province of Onta- rio extends from the state of New York to Minnesota along its southern border. O
