Earl Long arrives in Galveston for hearing on petition to return him to Louisiana. 1,900 to Attend 4-H Sessions at OSC Next Week Corvallis - How 4-H clubs help develop the state's num ber one resource-its youth will be dramatized in a spe cial pageant at the 1959 4-H Summer School, June 20 to 27, at Oregon State college. A total-ol 1,900 youngsters, 607 boys and 1,293 girls, from all parts of the state will be enrolled. While most of them travel In buses or cars, Jack son, Douglas and Curry coun ty delegates are coming in six covered wagons. The wagon train left Jacksonville June 8 and will have traveled 225 miles in 13 days on arrival at OSC. Highlight of this year's summer school will be a Cen tennial Pageant Friday night, June 28, at the OSC coliseum. Nearly 450 boys and girls have parts in the two-hour program. . Settlement of West Jessalee Mallalieu, OSC ex tension recreation specialist and pageant author, said it covers settlement'of the West, including life in the pioneer home, early school days, and boys and girls club work. The 'first Oregon 4-H summer school was held in 1915 with 33 youngsters. Today, attend ance is limited to 1,900. - During the week, youths at tend four to seven classes each day, take part in afternoon assemblies and special eve ning programs, elect house officers, and conduct 4-H church services. Dancing, out door sports, swimming, band, and chorus are special activi ties. Evening programs include the boys traditional '.'smoke less" smoker, girls pa jama parties, Oregon Bankers night entertainment, parties, and dances, 4-H talent show, and the 4-H pageant. . While on campus, the club members will live in dormi-, , tories, cooperative houses, fra ternities and sororities." 85 Counselors . A staff of 85 "counselors, mostly college students, serve the 38 living units during the week. Club members elect their own house officers. .This , year's 4-H faculty comes from OSC staff mem bers, state board of health, state police and a number of commercial firms. New classes for both boys and girls will include a series of film forums on "How We Live" conducted by Marion Thomas, OSC econ omist, and a team of state ex tension agents, Jackson Boss, W. G. Nibler, and Evelyn Funk. Gene Lear, another state agent, will conduct classes in group leadership. All boys at Hie 4-H school -will take a class in nearly every department of the school of agriculture in addi dition to classes in forestry, science and physical educa tion. Lessons in foods, cloth ing, home furnishings, buy manship and other home eco nomics subjects will be of fered girls. All youngsters take some health and safety classes, Cal Monroe, state 4-H agent, reported. - Swimming instruction will be offered to all non-swimmers, in addition to boys classes in gymnastics, self de fense and wrestling. A boys .'chorus will be organized for the first time in many years. Mrs.'Odelia Wilson of the col lege music department is con- ductor.
