' Wednesday, June 17, 19S9 Warmer California Waters Increasing Menace of Sharks San Francisco- (DPB -Marine scientists warned today that the warming waters off Cali fornia's beaches carry an ever- increasing menace of man-eat ing sharks. Two men have been killed by the vicious fish in the last six weeks. Only two previous deaths by sharks had been recorded-in 1952 and 1957 But all authorities agreed that the great white sharks which struck 400 miles apart can no longer be considered isolated stragglers in these coastal waters. Shark Nets Hinted One expressed fear that it might become necessary to protect swimmers with under water shark nets, which have long been rigged off the shark Infested beaches of Australia Coastal waters, which for generations were too cold for the killer fish, have grown six degrees warmer in the last two years, scientists said "Just how this has taken place is what we're all trying to find out," said J. F. T. Saner, U.S. Fish and Wildlife S e f v i c e oceanographer at Stanford University. Some scientists believe it has been caused by a shift in Pacific wind patterns which , have brought less upwelling of cold water from the ocean floor. "We have no idea how long the water will continue to be come warmer,"' said J.. B., Phillips, a marine biologist for the Fish and Game Depart ment at Pacific Grove. . Fishermen Plan To Hunt Sharks Los Angeles-UPD-Six sport fishermen disclosed today that they would go shark hunting this week end in the area off La Jolla, Calif., where a shark killed a skin diver last Sun day. The group includes Howard W. Chappell, supervisor of the Federal Narcotics Bureau in Los Angeles. He said he and his companions would drag a sackful of dead fish in the waters where Robert L. Pam perin, 33, was killed by the shark. Canning Industry Faces Strike Threat Vancouver, B. C. - (UPD -British Columbia's fish can ning industry faced a strike threat Tuesday. An official of the United Fishermen and Allied Work ers Union said the union was "certain" to reject a recom mended wage increase of four per cent for more than 4,000 shore workers. Bird would say to his little, drab-colored wife, "Honey, it's time to build a nest; I want to hear the clatter of little beaks." He just does not say it but when the time comes to raise a family, then Mr. and Mrs. Bird begin the construction of a nest. Where there is deep understanding there is little need for words. Nearly every bird is . en dowed with the gift of instinc tive knowledge necessary to some day construct a nest of its very own. Some few birds that lay in other bird's nests are the exception; there are but few of these. . When the time comes, he, or shet needs no instruction, blue-print, or contractor. He can, with his own two feet and bill,tbuild a nest typical of all the other nests of all the birds of his species; the' same as they have ben building for generations.
