Press International The Baltimore Orioles trad ed southpaw pitcher Jack Harshman to the Boston Red Sox for. another lefthander, Billy Hoeft, Monday, as big- league teams broke into a flurry of player-swapping to beat the trading deadline that goes into effect(mt midnight. And the emphasis was on pitching talent with he clubs Webfoots Tuning for A AU Meet University of Oregon, Eu gene -(Special)- Four Oregon track stars moved to Boulder, Colo.., Monday and set' up training headquarters with Coach Bill Bowerman on the University of Colorado camp us in preparation for the Na tional AAU championships next weekend. The Webfoot foursome is head by veteran miler Jim Grelle and includes three- miler Dick Miller, quarter miler Otis Davis and freshman miler Dyrol Burleson. All but Burelson competed last week end in the NCAA champion ships at Lincoln, Neb., and decided to spend the week at Boulder to acquaint them selves with the high altitude. Berths on the United States team which will meet Russia In July and the squad which will enter the Pan-American Games in August will be at gake at the' AAU meet. Last year Grelle won a spot. A fifth Webfoot star", de cathlon man Dave Edstrom, will continue his work here preparing for the national championships at Kingsburg, Calif., on June 25-26. He also was on the team which went to Russia last summer. ' July 4 Meet V Meanwhile the local track organization, the Emerald Em pire association, '. announced ticket applications for its sec ond annual Fourth of July meet, would be 'in the mail Monday. Dr. Ralph Christenson, pres ident of the group which will sponsor the Oregon AA meet, said that three special events are planned this year in addi tion to the regular schedule and outstanding fields in each are expected. Burleson and Sig Ohlemann, the Duck freshman ace from Canada, will be in the 880, Grelle and George Larson in the mile, and Ex-Duck stars Bill Dellinger and Pete Mun dle will face Dick Miller in the two mile. Invitations have also been sent to Ernie Cunliffe of Stan ford and Don Bowden of Cal ifornia in the 880, defending champion Alex Henderson of Arizona State, Oklahoma's Gale Hodgson and Washing ton's Jack Larson in the mile and Laszlo Tabori in the two mile. All are expected to be on hand unless they are chosen on one of the teams which will tour Europe immediately following the AAU meet this weekend. Beavers Open Series Portland - (CPD - The Port land Beavers open a 14-game stand at Multnomah stadium here tonight, going first in a three-game series against , the Phoenix Giants. Tonight's game will be a command per formance for Queen Mary Sue I of Rosaria and her court. The Beavers face the San Diego Padres for three games starting Friday. A four-game series with Salt Lake City opens June 22. And the 14 game stand will wind up with the Sacramento Solons for a four-game series opening June 26. Brundage To Stick Despite Demands Lausanne, Switzerland-IUPD-Avery Brundage, president of the International Olympic committee (IOC) said today he'll stick to his post despite demands that he resign be cause of the committee's ac tion in xlropping Nationalist China. "I do not intend to resign," Brundage snapped. "This is definite."" they've been rolling at a .714 clip since losing 15 of their first 17 games. The Tigers ended Wilhelm's nine-game winning streak and knocked him out of the box for good measure Mon day night with a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles The coup de grace was a two- run homer by Harvey Kuenn heading into summer days that will put hurling staffs to the test. The Orioles and Red Sox had high hopes that the two lefties they swapped at last live up to their promise. A year ago at this time Harsh man ranked as the ace of the Baltimore staff with a record of 5-0 and the converted first baseman appeared to be at the peak of his career. Harshman Slips Badly But he slipped badly after that and wound up at 12-17 for the season. This year he has an 0-6 record, has failed to finish any of his eight starts and has a 7.42 earned run average. Hoeft, whom Boston obtained from Detroit earlier this year, has a 1-4 mark and a 6.23 era. In other action on the play er mart over the week end: The Red Sox and Washing ton Senators called off their trade in which the Senators gave Boston relief pitcher Dick Hyde in exchange lor Murray Wall. Hyde com plained of a sore arm when he .reported to Boston and the two clubs agreed to cancel the swap. Left intact, how ever, was the part of the deal in which Washington gave in- fielder Herb Plews to Boston for infielder Billy Consolo. The St. Louis Cardinals pur chased third baseman Dick Gray from Los Angeles. Phils Sell Hegan The Philadelphia Phillies sold 38-year-old catcher Jim Hegan to the San Francisco Giants and recalled pitcher Dick Farrell from Buffalo of the International league. Far rell, a relief ace last season who went sour late in the year, was recalled because of several injuries on the Phils pitching staff. Los Angeles recalled out fielder Frank Howard from Victoria of the Texas League, where he was - hitting .370 with 27 homers. The Pittsburgh Pirates bought' veteran righthander Bob Porterfield from the Chi cago Cubs and sold pitcher R. G. Smith to the Detroit Tigers. And the Phillies dug down deep - a reported $40,000 worth - for another "bonus baby." He's Larry Daniels, a 19-year-old recent high school graduate from Birmingham, Ala., who is rated a good hit ting prospect. He is the fifth bonus player signed by the Phils within' the past two weeks for a total estimated outlay of $290,000. Darnels is slated for the Phils'. Johnson City, Tenn., farm club. , Recreation Prog ram to Open at EP Eagle Point - Eagle Point's summer recreation program for boys and girls in the fifth grade through high school will start on Wednesday with pee wee baseball practice and a meeting of all youngsters interested in summer activi ties. City Recreation Director Tom Van Etten has called the pee wee practice for 9:30 a.m. The general meeting will be at 7:30 pjn. Its purpose is to determine the number that will participate in the various activities in order that sched ules can be drawn up. Miss Ellen Callaghan will handle the girls' program. Swimming classes will start July 6. Van Etten has asked each boy or girl planning to take the instruction to regis ter by July 2 at the high school office. Golf Delegation Set For NCAA Tourney Portland - (UPD - OSC golf coach Vera Martin Monday announced a four-man delega tion to represent Oregon State in the NCAA golf champion ships at Eugene next week end. Leighton Tuttle, John Dun kin, Larry Copple and Lee Grant will compete for the Beavers. OSC finished fifth in the recent Pacific Coast conference golf tournament at Eugene and won by the University of Oregon. Hoyt Tagged in 6th, 7th Wilhelm, who seemed to be throwing the next best thing to an invisible pitch in com piling a 9-0 record and a 1.00 earned run average, shut out the Tigers for five innings but then they tagged him for three runs in the sixth and finished him with Kuenn's homer in the seventh. It marked only the third time in 11 starts that he failed to finish. The Cleveland Indians ran their winning streak to six games .and went into first place with a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox and the Wash ington Senators ended a five- game .losing streak with an 8-5 decision over the Kansas City Athletics, in other Amer ican league games. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Mil waukee Braves, 4-0, in the only National league game. Detroit's Ray Narleski went 7 23 innings before giving way to Dave Sisler to gain credit for his fourth victory of the year. Bell Throws 3-Hiller Gary Bell pitched a three hitter and struck out nine bat ters to win his sixth game for the Indians. The Indians made only eight hits themselves but three were homers - by Min nie Minoso, Mike Baxes and Woody Held. Bill Monou quette was the loser. .Harmon Killebrew clouted his 22nd homer and Jim Lem on hit his 17th to lead a 10-hit Washington attack that routed Bud Daley in three innings. John Romonosky shut out the Athletics for eight innings but then was kayoed when the A's scored five runs in the ninth. Don Drysdale struck out 12 Braves to raise his season to tal to 103 and win his sixth game. Bob Buhl shut out the Dodgers for six innings but Los Angeles scored four runs in the seventh on a walk, an error, a double by Jim Gil liam and Wally Moon's three- run homer. Alan Holmes, Eddie Simons Pace Qualifying Past champion Eddie Sim mons and defending titlist Alan Holmes paced the first round of qualifying over the week end for the men's match play championship of Rogue Valley Country club. They stroked one-under-par 71s. Dr. Robert Buck followed with a 71. A total of 12 had played their 18-hole rounds through yesterday. Qualifying play will close on Sunday June 2S with first round play to get underway shortly thereafter. As defender Holmes did not have to qualify but declared himself in order to compete for medalist prize. ' Dr. Ralph Odell fired a 69 for low gross in a week end ball sweepstakes. Simmons followed with a 71 and Buck and Jim Sheldon had 75s. Holmes headed net rivalry with 68 and Houston Pitts and Al Maginnis had 69 nets. Gal en Sanner carded a 70 and 72s were recorded by Ivan HaVrington,' Dr. Robert Bay- uk, Nelson Gallant and Brad Broyles. Princeton, N.J.-flJPD-Johnny Heyd of Salisbury, N.C., has been named winner of the William Winston Roper tro phy, Princeton university's highest athletic and academic award. Heyd was an outstand ing halfback on " the Tiger football team and was captain of the lacrosse squad. Rogue Valley Dairy Maids will play the Klamath Falls Basinette Softball team at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night at the Camp White field. But the home diamond Dairy Maids, who got off to an erratic start in suffering their fourth loss to the Port landers, had one big consola tion. Ragan chucked 24 games without a loss last season while Mazzuca struckout 26 batters in 16 innings in the world tour nament. Twenty-eight of these no hit, no run innings have been in Northwest league play. Handcuffed, Otherwise But Mazzuca, virtually hand cuffed the Dairy Maids, oth erwise. The one safe blow was the only one she yielded. She struck out 16 batters and walked four. Dairy Maids got on base on just five occasions. On offense the' Florists put six . of their eight hits with four bases on balls and a flock of errors to record their runs. Four of the tallies were in the first inning when the Port landers got just one hit, by Hap Piper, and two walks to go along with the miscues. Pi per was credited with two runs batted in. Mazzuca, herself; contrib uted to the scoring with a triple driving home Montie Wallis, who had singled, in the fourth inning.. The pitch er then came home on an er ror. A double by Liz Locke, a groundout by Delores Price and a single by Roma Menold gained a marker in the fifth inning. In the sixth another pair crossed home on an er ror, a pair of wild pitches, two walks, a fielder's option and a hit by Price. Rogue Valley four times had runners as far as second base. Barranquilla, Colombia-(UPD Gabriel Antonio Cuestas, a soccer goalie, was killed Mon day by lightning during a game in Santo Tomas. 1 All-Comers Track Meet - Entry Procedure Outlined Procedures for entry in the first all-comers track and field meet here this summer have been outlined by Don Spinas, Medford, area coordinator for the Oregon AAITs Olympic Development program. The first of five meets is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, at Medford High stadium. Events for boys and girls ages nine through 16 years will be run between 10 aon. and 12:15 pjn. and high school, ages 17 and 18, and open events are planned for 5 to 7 pjn. ' Spinas pointed out that meet entrants must be AAU members. AAU cards may be obtained at a cost of 50c at time of registration on Satur day. There is a charge also of 25c per person also to enter the meet. The funds will be used for purchase of meet awards. Coach Moscow, Ida. - (UPD - David Strack, assistant basketball coach at the University of Michigan, has been named to replace Harlan Hodges as the head basketball coach at the University of Idaho. Strack, 36, a court star on Wolverine teams in the mid dle 40s, was selected out of a field of 55 applicants for the post. Hodges resigned earlier this year to become school super intendent at Anna, 111.
