Tuesday, June 1, 1959 The Medical Roundup Emeritus Consultant In Medicine. Mr.yo Clinic Cmerirai Professor of Medicine Mayo Cllnie 'Leprosy' That Wasn't Leprosy I recently read an article by Lieut. General Sir Wm. Mac Arthur, reprinted in the Star, the journal published ' at Carville, La., by the people who are suf fering from Hansen's dis ease the new name for leprosy. As I have pointed nut in this column, the descriptions of leprosy asgiven in the Bible are not tnose of iiansen s ais ease as we know it today. T suspect that many of the lep ers of ancient Israel were al binos people without any color in their hair or skin or eyesf General MacArthur says that the word used in the Bible came to mean sinfulness, or any physical defect or blem ish .that would so disqualify a man that he could not enter the Temple. . Now, after much research, General MacArthur shows that in England in the Middle Ages, the words leper and leprosy did not mean what Heirloom Panel they mean today. The original meaning of , the word was something that "peels off" like the bark on trees. The Greek form of the word lepra, which meant scaly, but people with Hansen's disease are not scaly. In the Middle Ages, "leper" might mean someone who was scabby, or who had any skin disease,- or someone with the Black death (bubonic plague), or with smallpox, or any chronic illness. Eventually, it came to mean aeggar, or any one who was poor. Since only lepers could legally beg on the streets, many beggars claimed to be lepers! ' Puzzled Over Epidemic Being somewhat of a his torian, all my medical life I have puzzled over why, in the Middle Ages in Europe, there appeared to be a tremendous epidemic of leprosy, and why, the lepers suddenly disappear ed. They vanished to such an extent that many of the "lazar houses" were left empty. Af ter making a careful study of the medical literature of Eur ope around 1300 A.D., Gen eral MacArthur found that the size of the epidemic was exag gerated. For instance,., one writer said there were 282 leper-houses in England alone. But the General says there were nowhere near that num ber. And many of the "lazar houses" were really small alms-houses, built by some per son to acquire merit. , Most could care for only a few per sons. When, in 1341, the King's Commissioners visited many of these houses, to their surprise they found them fill ed with healthy pensioners! As in Bibical times, so in Medieval - England,' the diag nosis of leprosy was not made by physicians; it was made by monks, parish officials, and even watchmen at the gates of a town. Naturally, such people had weird ideas of what leprosy was. As General MacArthur says, much of what was written on leprosy in the Middle Ages was "ar rant . nonsense." I might add that the great fear that people have today of Hansen's disease is arrant nonsense. The evi dence shows that it is one of the least contagious of dis eases. At Carville, through the years, none of the doctors, nurses or attendants have caught the disease. Degrees Conferred Upon 3 From Area Three Medford students were among the 1,304 stu dents who received degrees Sundav at commencement exercises at Stanford univer-i sity. They were Susan Ankeny Barnes, bachelor of arts, so cial service; Donald Dean Mc Laughlin, bachelor of science, industrial engineering; and Dennis Coss Bateman, bacn elor of arts, psychology. Speaker for the event was John W. Gardner, president of Carnegie corporation, New York, who was also awarded an honorary Stanford fellowship.
