Long Goes To Court To Fight for Hospital Release Galveston, Tex.-flJPlJ-Louis-iana Gov. Earl K. Long went into court today fighting to be released from the mental hos pital he claims his family con spired to put him in. The court hearing, on Long's petition for a writ of habeas corpus, could develop into a bitter family wrangle. The hearing is being held in District Judge L. D. God- .4 Oil 3 Glasses daily of GOLDEN GUERNSEY the "lligh Energy" MILK means EXTRA PEP for EXTRA HOURS every day! i COMMENDED PAREWTS By PARENTS' MAGAZINE - 6 dard's court. It is supposed to have nothing to do with whether Long is mentally ill or not, but on whether, as lie charges, he was drugged, tied hand and foot and brought to the hospital in Gal veston against his will. Challenges jurisdiction The hearing also challenges Texas jurisdiction to have him committed to the Univer sity of Texas hospital. If Long wins release in the hearing today, he will be at a full-scale sanity hearing scheduled for Tuesday in pro bate court. The fiery, -3-year-old gov ernor has been held in the hospital since he was flown here in a hush-hush flight in a Louisiana National Guard plane on May 30. He charged in his writ for habeas corpus petition filed Friday that he was drugged, tied hand and foot and brought to the hospital "for cibly, unwittingly, and unwil lingly." He signed the peti tion: "Earl Long, governor in exile by force in kidnaping. Sunday Long embellished his charges in a rambling in terview by telephone with Charley Ray, news editor of KTBS-TV in Shereveport, La. Charges Political Schema Long charged in the taped interview that his wife and political associates, including Sen. Russell Long, conspired to get him out of Louisiana to further their own aims. Sen. Long replied in Wash ington that "the governor is not responsible for 'that state ment or any one of a large number of others he can be expected to make in the next few days. The governor is a sick man. Long charged in the inter view that "I was captivated Thursday night but I didn't realize it until Friday morn ing. They brought two bone crushers, one weighed 290 and one 180. We had 11 fights Thursday night, and Friday." The governor went on in sometimes repeated phrases to say that "30 people" put him on the airplane and told him they were going to take him to a clinic in New Orleans but flew him to Galveston in stead. He claimed somebody put up $250,000 to have him kidnaped. 2 Feared Drowned As Plane Dunked Portland-(DP-A light plane plunged into the Columbia riv er near the mouth of the Wil lamette last night, and the pi lot and possibly a passenger were feared drowned.
