John, a young Army major who is about to be a Lieu tenant Colonel, is currently assigned to the executive of fices as assistant White House staff secretary. He and his wife and their four children live in nearby Alexandria, where three of the kids are in private schools. The story in Gettysburg is that .they are considering moving more or less perman ently to their cottage on the northwest corner of the Pres indent's Gettysburg farm. Under such a plan, John would commute daily to his job in Washington and the children would attend the public schools in Gettysburg. If these Gettysburg stories are true, John is in for a lot of auto riding. That is, if he makes the round trip daily.. The arm is about 85 miles from the. White House. The driving time each way runs between one hour and 45 minutes to .two hours, de pending on route and traffic conditions.. ' There always is the possi bility that the Gettysburg neighbors know only part of the story and that the John Eisenhowers might be think ing of moving only for the summer. Their home on the farm would make a thorough ly adequate permanent resi dence, however. The dwelling once was a red school house, but when the President's big house .was built, the school was converted into an attrac tive two-story home with a white brick veneer and a rela tively large yard with plenty of play space. Arizona Horn Seen . There also are a few peo ple in Gettysburg who know the President moderately well and who believe that when he leaves office, he will not retire to the seclusion of his big, handsome farm . home. Some say they think hafll es tablish some sort of winter residence in the West, pos sibly in Arizona where the weather is dependably warm during the colder months in the East. Whether, such speculation has , any real basis is diffi cult to establish, but it is" true that Eisenhower in the protracted periods on the farm when winter brings freezing and frequently wet weather to the Gettysburg area. , If the President continues to use Gettysburg as a base of operations after January, 1961,' he probably would spend most of his time there in the spring, and again in the late summer and early fall. These are the best times of the year at the farm. The summers can be cruelly hot even for those with air con ditioned houses. Gold Trophy on Desk The .President s press sec retary, James C.
