Like all things that happened unexpec tedly, he took this occasion, too. with his usual equani mity. Any creature as sophis ticated as-a chimpanzee faces things philosophically, and sel dom becomes flustered at any new gimmick. I've been assured by sci entists who are supposed to know, that every action and behavior of the chimpanzee is. purely instinctive; but in spite of it. whenever I am in the presence of one of the man like apes, I never can quite overcome the feeling that there are thoughts racing through his mind that I don't understand. I was thinking about this when I opened Bongo's cage, awakened him, and opened the door. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes, extended his hand for human guidance with a "what's the pitch now" looki on his face. Without thinking how silly it must have looked to the bystanders I carefully explained to him that I want ed him to pose with a young lady student. Perplexed? He walked along beside me, and looked up with what seemed to me to be a look of mild perplexity on his dark face; evidently he was think ing it over. Watkins came suddenly conscious of an irritation on his left fore arm; a sandfly or some other small insect had apparently settled there. Bongo stopped walking, removed his hand from mine and gave the in sect his entire attention. He sat down, and with the forefinger of his right hand poked gently at the spot on the other arm that was itch ing. But in a minute he stop ped this diversion and took my hand. He had made up his mind. Cooperated Marilyn and Bongo were fast friends right from the start, and he quickly under stood and willingly cooperat ed, seemingly enjoying the ex perience of posing with a co ed. When the picture was tak en, Bongo registered sadness, and whimpered like a baby as he realized that his minute in the limelight was over. By some wild understanding that a mere human can never un derstand, he knew that too soon his new-found friend was leaving him, and the dark, sloping face, with the soft brown eyes looked disconso lately from between the bars of the cage that once again was to hold him prisoner.
