As many unhappy persons know, multiple scler osis is a miserable disease which can keep giving trouble for a life-time. As one woman wrote recently, she has had it for 33 years. Another wo man wrote that she is one of the lucky ones who has had Lit for 13 years and is still able to go out and do her shopping. A few years ago, the doctors at Mayo s searched through the city' of Rochester, Minne sota, looking for patients with multiple sclerosis and found many cases. In most of these, the person had had the disease for much of a lifetime. As I remember, half of these peo ple were still able to do some work. - Because of a spotty type of damage to the little sheath that insulates the nerves throughout the body, muscles here and there will lose some of their function. Fortunate ly, in many cases, this func tion can return for a while. The patient then has what we doctors call a spontaneous re mission. As yet, the cause of the disease is not known and hence there is no cure. - The National .'Multiple Scle rosis Society, with the help of CourtRecords MtNICIPAL COURT Arthur Ellsworth Chew, dis- aheved traffic sien. 15 Raymond Lesco Smith, failure to use truck route, $10. It will make them feel less lone ly, and then they will know that whenever a hopeful treat ment is found they will promptly be told about it. As it is, these patients are con stantly being stirred up need lessly by false rumors that a drug has been, found in Rus sia or somewhere. Worse yet, they hear a rumor that the Government won't let it be used here. As members of the MS Society,. they will be told the truth. German Measles and PragnancY Recently, Dr. Russell J. Blattner reviewed the litera ture on the possible bad ef fects of ' German measles ' in the early part of pregnancy and concluded that if a moth er gets German measles in the first three months of preg nancy, she has a 10 or 12 per cent chance of havirig some thing wrong with her . baby. But if she gets it in the sec ond or 'third three-months pe riods, . not much damage 3s likely to result. If a mother knows that she has been 'exposed to German measles, , she - should quickly get an injection of ,g a m m a globulin, 20 ml. injected , in tramuscuWrljri , B e 1 1 e r : yet would be plasma or gamma globulin taken from . persons in the convalescent stage of German measles. . ' , ' The - question sometimes comes up when a motherhas been ' exposed, to G e r m,a n measles whether she ; should have a- therapeutic abortion. As Dr. ' Blattner. says, about the. only mothers who' might consider this are those -who are exposed in, the. first four weeks of pregnancy; during which time the fetus is most susceptible' to damage from the measles. Because of these dangers, it is well that girls be exposed to German meas les so that they, will later be immune.' It is hoped that be fore - long, an efficient meth od of immunizing people to Germij -measles will . be found.
