ported that new crime statis
tics show an "encouraging
drop" in murders and rob
beries during the first three
months of 1959.
But Hoover emphasized
that the overall crime rate in
the nation's cities showed on
ly slight decreases - less than

with the first quarter of 1958.
Crime incidence reached an
all-time high in 1958.
Today's FBI report showed
murders dropped 3 per cent,
auto thefts tapered off by 4
per cent and robberies in

Aggravated assaults rose
13 per cent, and forcible rape

offenses of burglary and lar
ceny over $50 went up 1 per

The crimes reported in the
FBI index represent a count

to them and are not just limit
ed to arrests.
In connection with these
preliminary crime figures,
Hoover appealed to all Amer
icans "to continue and in
tensify their cooperation with
law enforcement officers in
the continuing battle against
the hardened criminal and
vicious juvenile delinquents."
Most Murders Solved
The FBI .said that reports
from 1,972 cities showed that
during the 1958 calendar
year, city police solved by ar
rest 94 per cent of all mur
ders, 90 per cent of negligent
manslaughters, 79 per cent
of the aggravated assaults,
73 per cent of the forcible
rapes, 43 per cent of the rob
beries, 30 per cent of the
burglaries, 27 per cent of the
auto thefts and 20 per cent
of the larcenies.
