o o o o o 1 New Housing Dream House Br ROSE McKEE Washington - The Govern ment's new housing chief is himself the proud owner of a new home which has every right to be called a dream house. Norman P. Mason, appoint ed by President Eisenhower as administrator of the Hous ing and Home Finance agency this year, is the man who coordinates Federal activities aimed at Americans have homes of their own. The 62-year-old HHFA chief told the National Association of Home Builders that he and his wife stumbled on their house on Sunday afternoon when they parked their car on i secluded side street in the historic Georgetown sec tion of Washington and saw an "Open House" sign. . They inspected the house, which was brand new, and liked it at once. Back in their apartment that evening, they decided that while the house was small, it was also com pact, and just what they need ed how that their two chil dren haa1 homes of their 'own. The next morning, the Masons bought the house. Houee of Brick Although Mason was in the lumber business before he left New England to come to Washington, their home is of brick. Built on a croncete slab it has a living room, kitchen and powder room downstairs, t two bedrooms with an adjoin ing bath on the second floor, and a studio-type room with a skylight on the third floor. There is a garage with a side door into the house. Undoubtedly every home owner wants his home to give a guest a pleasing first impres sion. The Masons have ach ieved this. The effect from their doorway is one of light ness, cheerfulness, and charm. : The living room, with a gold rug of nylon, off-white walls and modern furniture in scale with the size of the room, is in full view from the small foy er. Contributing, to the pleas ing impression are sliding glass panels which form the wall at the far end of the room - and carry a guest's eye to the grassed patio beyond. , The fireplace was built withMt a mantle. The Masons believe this gives the fire Minx Modes" debonair version efr the SEVENTEEN look.yon lev! Parker Wood' Chief Buys of His Own place a modernistic effect in line with the 'furniture they chose and helps the- room look more spacious. The Masons have a long, narrow and completely mod ern kitchen in turquoise. The housing chief proudly demon strated that the top cabinets open at the touch of a finger on their surface. A below-the- counter cabinet for soap powd er and other cleaning supplies opens at the touch of a knee. Mason said this was handy because "maybe you have both hands wet when you reach for supplies." He pointed out, too, that the "house has what all women and some of us men appreci ate, lots of closet space." He and his wife each have a clathes closet with double- sliding doors in their room, The guest room has a big, walk-in closet. Photography is Mason's hobby and he has his equip ment in the third floor studio- room. The- air conditioning and heating equipment are also on the third floor. The garage walls art lined with pegboard, from which hang various tools. There is a place for everything - and everything is in its place Stored there too is an electric lawn mower, which Mason said "is my choice possession. He added: "I get kidded a lot for having an electric lawn mower for such a small patio." Among Mrs. Mason's cher ished passessions are old deeds to land in Massachusetts that her ancestors acquired in Co lonial days. One deed was granted by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1738. She has the old deeds framed and they hang in-the dining area of the living room. Mason said: "My job is to serve home-owners. Two- thirds of the families of Amer ica now own their own homes and I encourage people to get homes of their own. I think you can rightly say that I practice what I preach." In addition to their new home in Washington, the Ma sons have a home in Chelms ford, Mass., where he former-: ly was in business, a summer home on Cape Cod and a log cabin at Dunstable, Mass., a town founded by Mrs. Mason's ancestors.
