r . Woods, Water, Wildlife By Hank DeVess -'I haven't heard any stories about how he game commis sion fed the fish in Diamond lake opening day this year so I. imagine there were a fair "number ca-Qht. When there aren't any snibis given as reason for not catching fish you can exct there was a fair percentage of satisfaction gained from last 5 Saturday's efforts. Some day. I ought to try it on opening day, but as yet I find other places more interesting.- -My particular brand 1 of peoplephobia still keeps me away from crowds like that. .Seven thousand people: Wow! TIME FOR SALMON ' ; The. latest report on the spring chinook salmon run Is that the peak of the run Is now above- Galice. It Seems -a lot of people got discouraged and pulled in xneir salmon boards and Bow those -who still have their boards out are doing landslide business. The word is that the run is go ing to peak out early and probably won't go much over 10.000 fish. Let's hope it doesn't happen. If you want to catch a salmon or just watch them at Savage Rapids or Gold Ray, the time is now. WHAT AND HOW MANY? Some interesting' catch re ports are coming from the Grants Pass area. The delay ed opening of trout season in the middle Rogue was for the purpose of allowing the down stream migrating steelhead a chance to escape from the the angler horde until they are more mature.- (Big, that is.) Now we find that about 81 per cent of the catch around Grants Pass consisted of wild steelhead.- The Game commission planted about 8,000 legal size rainbows there just a short time ago and 3Vi per cent of the catch this last week end were planted fish. There was a showing of 2 per cent made up of marked summer steel head. These were some , of those fish planted as an at tempt to build up the summer steelhead run. - DOES IT PAY? When' one reads of figures like these, you can't help but wonder whether or not '-ffaxchery programs are the best way to provide ' more fishing. In the face of these facts,, it wouldn't be . too risky to say that natural reproduction of. fish pro vides more fishing than the hatchery ; programs. . Th9 may be true of the Rogue, in that there Is little return of hatchery fish to the angler's creel, but if an other page is turned there is a report of a catch in the Applegaie ,of which 87 to 90 per cent were hatchery plants. If this seems con fusing, remember that one solution isn't meant to an swer all problems. We need many solutions, to our many problems. OREGON'S PROGRAM The Oregon Game commis sion program plants legal size fish in streams and fingerling sized fish in the lakes. The best reason for this is that there is a 60 to 75 per cent survival of fingerlings in lakes but only a 3 to 5 per cent survival of these fish in streams. It is estimated that the legal sized fish have a survival rate of only 35 per cent in the streams. This is pretty good because in some states the figure is closer to SCHOOL'S a"V" - foe' Children at Delivered SP 2-5271 15 per cent. It should be easy to see that hatchery fish are costly and are used primarily be cause the public demands easy-to-catch fishing. It would seem that they still aren't getting it by the simple ex pedient o more hatcheries for more ftshermen. There must be a better answer.. THE ANGLER'S LOG 1 In years past on Diamond lake there existed what was called "the chumming line." I hope the resorts of opening day weren't the re sults of such an unsports manlike method of still fishing. Diamond Lake The best catches have been on eggs or worms, still fish ing. On opening day Bill Coin of Camp Whit& and Mrs. Edna Kilburn of Central Point limited out in . three hours trolling flatfish. Fish catches are averaging 19 inches and the biggest so far weighed 6V2 pounds and stretched 24 inches long. Fish Lake Trolling a fly gava the best success with still fish ing coming in at second place. The 6 to 8 inch fish comprised about 67 per cent of the catches and the 8 to 10 inchers about 32 per cent. There was a rook trout caught and fnis means the lake still may have roach in it. So far none have been found. Willow Creek Lots of limits on woolly worm trolling when the water is roughed up or at certain times of the day. Squaw Lake ' Has. been gSbd all week. Lots of limit catches on FFfcW and FF& flatfish. Catfishing is . improving. . Lake of fSe Woods Fishing has been steadily improving. Limits have been brought in on FF&W and FF& triple teaser. RJamalh Lake Harriman's resort has had some boats comir j in with 8 og9 fish and others with -none. TFfcW, FF&flatfish and Andy Reekers are do ing the business. H. R. Stevenson of Phoenix made the hoard this week with a 5 pounder caught - on a freak. Biggest fish so far has been a 9 Vi pounder? THE OPTIMIST'S CORNER Unless the fish at Diamond a?e scared to death, the weather ; should Help keep things going . up there, I figure they'll still oe there after I've caught my salmon. The way things sound, ny place that's wet ought to pro duce fish. GOOD LUCK!
