1 ft MAIL TRIBUNO fledforf, Ojr. f 14 Teachers Are Guests at Kiwanis Club Meeting Fourteen teachers of the Medford school district and of St. Mary's school were spe cial guests of Medford Ki wanis club Wednesday at an "appreciation day" luncheon meeting at Rogue Valley Country club. Roy Gilbertson, principal t Hoover Grade school, jpeak- ing pr teachers who have been for some time in the Medford system, praised the solid, conservative approach to education here. He pointed out that the school system here does not take on new things until they are proven to be good. He mentioned the flexibility of the program here and to the individualizing of education. Superior education is being given to our children here, Gilbertson declared. Mrs. Carol Kelly, Hedrick Junior High school, sgoke for new teachers in Medionf. Other Teachers Other teachers attending were Robert Semon, the sen ior high school; Dale Bates McLoughlin Junior high; Jer- old Martin, Hoover; Mrs. Lu cille Stroh, Jackson; Miss Mary Lou Hanke, Jefferson; Mrs. Donna Witter, Lincoln; Mrs. Mary Carlon, Oak Grove; Mrs. Betty Pruett, Oak Rrove; Mrs. Ella Elle, Washington; Mrs. Joanne Wickman, West Side; Mrs. Virginia Ferguson, Wilson, and Donald Sweeney, St. Mary'. G It was pointed out that three members of the Kiwanis club are teachers, Lindsey Vinsel and Irr Miricg, senior high school, $nd E. Ron Rice, Howard. W. H. Simpkins, Snows a "Buttons" in the circus world, was on the program, end Mr Ed Barnett, president of Med ford Kiwanian Dames, pre sented a $140 check to the club. The funds will go to the Kiwanis - sponsored dental clinic. Dwight Crozier, Iron Rite sales manager, was Introduced as a newwanian. Assembly Held at Cave Junction Cave Junction Mike Whitely, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Whitely and valedictorian of the 1959 graduating class of the Illinois Valley High school, was presented the University of Oregon Dad's scholarship certificate, the University of Oregon Youth Leadership scholarship and a scholarship certificate to the Willamette university as well as theAmerican Chemical So ciety Award, at the annual honor awards Tuesday. The University of San Francisco scholarship was awarded to Mike McDermott, salutatorian, as well es the Bausch and Lomb science award. An Oregon State scholar ship was awarded to Bob Wright and the high school PTA scholarship certificate was awarded to Carmel White. The Stem Citizenship Awards, given to the graduat ing boy and girl who were judged to be the outstanding students in civic achievements for the school, were given to Myrna Gibbons and Fred Davis. Frontier Mining Town Established A frontier mining town, "Oregon Gold Gulch," is be ing built in the area as part of the Oregon Centennial eel ebration on the county, ac cording to Ernie Hood, Jack son County Centennial associ ation coordinator. , The mining town is being built by LaRue Morris on his , Hidden Valley ranch proper ty near Highway 99, north of Central Point. The town will be complete with wooden sidewalks and all details as might have been foubd in a 19th century mining town." Gold digging will be under way on Mine st. at the edge of town and buildings will in clude a general store, black- smith shop, stage coach sta tion and a miner's supply store. Hood reported that the town is nearly completed and is scheduled to be opened within several weeks. It was ex plained that there is space - available for old mining equipment displays.
