f Local and Purse, $50 Taken - Howard Lloyd Lehman, 1516 Whitman pi., reported to Medford po lice yesterday the theft of a black purse containing about $50 in coins last Wednesday night from the glove com partment of his car while it was parked at his home or at Medford airport. Recommend - Firemen on city home inspection made 54 recommendations yeste r d a y for removal of fire hazards. They inspected 76 residences and noted no hazards in 35. The firemen stopped at 182 homes and found no one home at 91. Fifteen occupants turned down the offer of in spection. STRANGE HATES explode in a savage land! MERCER Thomas Otto Mercer, 79, of 720 West Jackson st., a for mer resident of Medford who returned here to live 14 months ago, died at his home this morning. SCHULER ' Masonic services for Charles LeRoy Schuler, 56, of 114 North First st., Talent, who died Wednesday, will be held at Conger - Morris Funeral home Monday at 10 a.m. Ash land Lodge No. 23, AF&AM, will be in charge, and com jnittal will be in Memory Gar dens Memorial park. Mr. Schuler was born Oct. 20, 1902, in Topeka, Kans. He was a veteran of service in the Navy during World War II. He was , active in civic and fraternal affairs, being a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ashland; Ashland Lodge No. 23, AF& AM; Elks Lodge, Ashland; and the Talent Lions club. He formerly lived in Klam ath Falls, and moved to Tal ent in 1946. His first wife, Mary, died in 1956. - He was married Nov. 13, 1957, in Placerville, Calif., to his present wife, Genevieve, who survives. Other surviv ors include four daughters, Sandra, Karen, Janet, and Jacqueline. Haworth. Haworth explained that a delay in the arrival of caulk ing materials necessary to re pair the bottom of the pool has led to postponement from the original opening date, June 6. A special American Red Cross water safety instruc tors' training course has been scheduled for the week of June 29-July 3, Haworth re ported. The first of four sessions of regular swimming instruction is scheduled to begin the week of July 6. , Ways to Eliminate Mosquitoes Named Orie Moore, chief sanitar ian for the Jackson county public health office, has sug gested that residents eliminate mosquito-breeding places so they will not have to call on the public health department for help. Moore suggested that all puddles and swampy places, which make ideal breeding grounds, be filled, in. Deep pans or buckets should be used to catch the drip from swamp coolers placed in win dows during hot weather, the sanitarian suggested. The water which runs through these coolers drips to the ground where it forms puddles and these in turn breed mos quitos, he said. Run-off irrigation water also causes, a mosquito problem. Moore pointed out. Water gathers on land when irriga tion water is used improperly, he said. "Mosquitos are beginning to 'pop' now although the weath er isn't too warm yet," the sanitarian warned.
