Poplarville Lynchers Due for 'Sweating-It- Out' During Summer Br LYLE C. WILSON Washington-TCPfl-There will be some sweating done in Pop larville, Miss., during this year i hot slimmer and well into the cool of fall. The anxious sweat of gnaw ing fear will bathe the 10 persons who lynched Mack Charles Porter on April 25. It : LyU c. wnsoa is fair to de duce from the latest develop ment in that lynch-law inci dent that the guilty individu als are going to have some unhappy hours, days and months. FBI Withdraws Latest development in the Parker case was the FBI's withdrawal. Director J. Edgar Hoover put some 40 agents on the Parker case. Their ac tivities ended with announce ment. Monday that Parker's lynchers had not violated any federal law. The FBI investi gation took place on the as sumption that federal law had been violated. When no federal violation was discovered, the FBI with drew. The evidence gathered will not be wasted, however. The word today is that the evi dence now being turned over to Mississippi's Gov. J. P. Coleman involves 10 persons. Mississippi law evidently will operate slowly. Grand jury proceedings in the coun ty in which Poplarville is situ ated are not likely to begin before next Nov. 2. The men who lynched Parker will have a lot of time to contemplate the fact hat their names and evidence linking them with the crime are in official hands. Sweat It Out "Sweating it out," is what the wartime GIs used to say to describe a time of waiting un der great and unrelieved pres sure. That is to say: The AVER AGE American of today can expect his life span to be 22 years longer than the life span of his grandparents. TJOW come? JLs 'The experts give the cred it, to better sanitation, new medical skills and discovery of the many miracle drugs. The modern world has its points. v MORE figures: In 1910, in the United . States, there were 1,060 males to every 1,000 females. In 1958, there were 981 males to every 1,000 females. Why? Nobody seems to know. Ev en the statistical sharks, who report that it IS so, don't seem to be very certain as to WHY it is so. I SUPPOSE you read from time to time of the antics of those among us who seem to have more money than they know what to do with movie and TV moguls, night club entertainers, big box of fice sport figures and so on. Their careers suggest the ': thought that, if you want to get rich quick, ENTERTAIN people. IS THAT new in the world? It ISN'T. Turn back the pages of history and you will find that a THOUSAND years ago the wandering minstrels, the trou badours, the jongleurs, the acrobats who wandered from town to town, from feudal castle to feudal castle, from royal court to royal court, had it unbelievably good in com parison with the general run of people. They ate the choicest foods. Thov drank the choicest wines.. Relative to their time, they lived the life of Riley with somebody else paying for it. will be sweating it out until next November. They prob ably know they have been identified. There seems to be no doubt that Gov. Coleman will put every resource of the state be hind the effort to convict the lynchers. Nor does there seem to be any doubt whatsoever that Parker was guilty of the crime of rape for which he was locked up. With the state determined to make the prosecution a real one and the evidence now in hand, the end of the story is pretty well in sight. But be fore the end of the story there is likely to be some sweating and squirming among 10 per sons who helped put Parker away last April. ' Council on Aging To Meet Thursday The Rogue Valley council on Aging will meet Thursday, May 28, at 3 p.m. at the Sen ior Activity Center, 601 East Jackson st. Final reports on the recent National Senior Citizens week will be given and a discus sion held on projects of the recreation, health, low cost house and employment com mittees. Chairmen of the com mittees are Dr. Frank Rob erts, Mrs. Chester Guches, William Hoxie, and C. L. Wil liams, respectively. The meeting is open to the public and all persons who have suggestions on solving the problems of older people are invited to attend and take part in the discussions. Women who are volunteers in the Friendly visitors group are invited to attend. Fifty Plus club members are also eligible to attend. Monday Night Television Lifts Sights With Du Pont Showing of 'Billy Budd' By WILLIAM EWALD UPI Correspondent New York -ffiPD- Television can be an idiot box and it is at its most idiotic on Mon day evenings when it grinds out Name That- Tune and The Tex an and Rest less Gun and Wells Fargo and Peter Gunn and Ar thur Murray William Ewakl Party. , Last Monday night, how ever, the idiot box lifted its sights and' offered "Billy Budd." Quite frankly, I was pre pared to be bored by Budd. I've read the Melville story three or four times, seen it played in Broadway once and on television twice as straight play and opera. But the CBS-TV Du Pont Show of the Month production, des pite a few flaws, was a fair joy. It's a pleasure when TV shucks hypnosis and instead tried to pinch to make you feel and think. Billy Budd" is, of course, a rather infuriating work. It takes a close but rather mud dled sideswipe at parelleling the business of Adam and the fall of man -r- innocence tempted by the devil, the loss of Eden, the final reconcili ation between Adam and the larger power over him. Es tes Kefauver, (D-Tenn.), says he still opposes the confirma tion of Lewis L. Strauss as secretary of commerce despite the position of his Tennessee colleague, Sen. Albert Gore. Gore, also a Democrat, said Saturday that while he was "prejudiced" against Strauss he was inclined to vote for him when the nomination is called up in the Senate. Strauss is a former chair man of the Atomic Energy Commission. The Senate Com merce commission. The Sen ate Commerce committee rec ommended his confirmation to the commerce department post by a close 9-8 vote. ' Kefauver, who testified in opposition to Strauss before that committee, said in a state ment Monday that his position had not changed. He said he had voted to confirm thousands of Presi dent Eisenhower's appointees and "never have opposed any presidential appointment on frivolous or personal grounds." Sweet Home Man Accident Victim Sweet Home - (DPD - Marvin Cline, 23, was killed Monday when, a trailer house fell on him as it was being raised on a jack so the wheels could be removed. The accident occurred near Lava Lake in .the Santiam Pass area, dine, a logger, moved there recently to work on a job. Survivors include his wife Gloria; a son, Randy, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Cline, all of Sweet Home. "Perfection," says C a p t. Vere in the play, "is a disease we stamp out at its first rash showing." And in a more gloomy aside earlier in the work, Vere states Melville's terribly melancholy position: "The world wants not justice, but order, to be left alone to hug its own iniquity." This tone may be a bit diffi cult for a TV audience, train ed on pap, to accept. The play's final scene, for exam ple, in which Billy willingly mounts the yardarm to be hanged after he has unwitt ingly killed a santanic master at-arms and shouts "God bless you, Captain Vere" is a bit thick. But I found myself so enmeshed in the Melville world Monday night, that I almost : but not quite went along with it. Difficult To Accept I say not quite for two rea sons. One is because I find the character, Budd, a bit difficult to accept except on the single and limited level of allegory. The other day in the playing of Don Mur ray as Budd. Murray, unhap pily crowned with a growth of blonde hair that made him look like Harpo Marx, was not quite up to the role. There was a confusion on his part of innocence and im becility. ' The rest of .'the cast, how ever, despite a -wild contrast in acting styles, functioned admirably. James Donald as Vere, Roddy McDowall as Squeak, and George Ebeling as Dansker were quite solid, And Alfred Ryder who re placed the ailing Jason Ro- bards in the Claggart part, was superb he charged his role with a subtle electricity and delivered his lines with a cadence that gave his Clag gart a lormai dui Dene va Die malevolence. 'Starvation Direct Cause of Dulles' Death, Doctor Says By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor New York-DPD-Medical sci ence knows a great deal about the kind of cancer which end ed the career of John Foster Dulles. Usually the direct cause of death is not cancer but is either pneumonia or "physiological starvation." Dulles' personal physician, Dr. A. D. Daughton, said in his opinion the later was the direct killer. Multiplying can cer cells used up all the nu trition which medical science can put into the bodies of the gravely ill by one means or another, and none was left with which to maintain the vital functions of the healthy body cells, he said. No Final Answer However, there will be no final answer. Daughton said there would be no autopsy. Experts on colonic cancer, in terviewed by this reporter, said that it "seeded" itself throughout the body, and a usual site of "seeding" was the lungs. There the growing colony of cancer cells interferes with the work of the lungs which is to put oxygen into the blood and take carbon dioxide out of it, and then, in the words of one expert, "a condition follows which resembles pneumonia and is often call- ASNE Asks Congress Payroll Disclosure Washington -(UPD- The Am erican Society of Newspaper Editors has asked the House and Senate to make public their payrolls and office ex penditures. It was disclosed Monday that petitions by the ASNE's Board of Directors were filed with the two houses last Fri day. ,. , The ASNE said that "citi zens and taxpayers of the United States are entitled to know how public funds are disbursed." Secrecy about congressional office finances, it said, "protects against dis closure the acts of those who may have illegally, improper ly or recklessly disposed of further money." The petitions stemmed from recent disclosures of congres sional nepotism by Scripps Howard writer Vance H. Trimble. ed pneumonia Daughton said that in Dul les' case, pneumonia had not contributed to . death. His pneumonia had been detected early and he had "a rugged constitution." When death came he was "nearly recov ered" from it, Daughton said. He added that Dulles' case was "not different from hun dreds, of other cancer cases and there was a generalized dissemination of the disease." Continuous Structure Cancers of the colon and rectum are considered one dis sease because the two organs form a continuous tubular structure. Last year approxi mately 58,000 new cases were discovered, in 30,500 women and 27,500 men, according to statistics of the American Cancer Society. It is not an uncommon cancer and less than one-third of the victims survive five years. Those who do owe their "cure" to early detection fol lowed by surgical removal of the cancerous tissue. Dulles underwent such surgery Nov. 3, 1956. As subsequent events demonstrated so tragically, the surgeons did not get it all. The chances were that cancer cells had spread away from the original colony at the time of the surgery, the experts said. Parts of Cemetery In Need of Cleaning Gold Hill - There will be no certain day set for clean up in the Rock Point Ceme tery prior to Memorial day, because of the weather condi tions, Mrs. A. A. Walker, the chairman of the Rock Point Cemetery improvement com mittee said. Mrs. Walker said that any one who wishes to assist with the general cleanup of the cemetery, while they are tak ing care of their own lots, are encouraged to do so. De bris may be placed in piles, which will be hauled away. Some cleaning was done during recent cleanup days, held several weeks ago, Mrs. Walker said. Oregon Cattlemen Secretary Resigns Prineville - (UPD Ed Coles Monday announced his resig nation as executive secretary of the Oregon Cattlemen's As sociation. He had held the job nearly six years. Coles said he was resigning effective July 1 to devote full time to operating a livpstock auction yard with Paul Muller, Wamic livestock producer at The Dalles. Applications for the job are being received by Kent Ma gruder, Clatskanie, president of the association. Ronald Coleman's Estate Appraised Santa Barbara,' Calif. -(UPD-Actor Ronald Coleman's es tate was appraised in Superior Court Monday at $1,088,234, with the bulk of it going to his widow, Benita, now the wife of actor George Sanders. Coleman left all his per sonal property and stock in San Ysidro Ranch Corp. to his widow, plus a trust fund for her and one to be shared jointly by his widow and teenage daughter, Juliet. Coleman died of a lung in fection May 19, 1958, at the age of 67. !
