"Bojd am m comparitom oi manuiaaurfx' 54th Year Medford 2nd SECTION MEDFORD, Six States Comply With Integration Rule By ROY WILKINS Executive Secretary, National Association for the Advance ment of Colored People (Written for UPI) New York -UPD- Five years ago the United States Su preme Court unanimously ruled that compulsory separ ation of the races is unconsti tutional. When this decision was handed down on May 17, 1954, the laws of 17 states and the practice of the . District of Columbia required the iso lation of Negro public school children from children of oth er races. Today six states (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Lousiana and Flori da) , still ref'ise even token compliance with Supreme Court ruling as to elementary and high schools. Florida has announced ten tatively that it will desegre gate one elementary school in Miami next September. Lousiana has Negro students in its state university and in several state colleges. Florida has two Negro university stu dents. Therefore, in fact, only four states have no sort 'of desegregation in. public edu cation. Far From Accurate But a geographical sum mary is a far from accurate measure of the progress made in terms of numbers of stu dents. In North Carolina, Vir ginia and Tennessee only tok en integration is in effect. While some 400,000 Negro children are now in integrat ed systems in the South, there remains a total of 2,500,000 in strictly segerated situa tions. Measured in terms of the monumental job ahead, far too little progress has been achieved. The opponents of integra tion can take small comfort from the present picture, for the forces arrayed against them must certainly prevail. Among these are law and morality, economics and sci ence,' the emergence interna tionally of a powerful anti Western bloc, and the gener al trend of the mid-century toward the recognition of hu man dignity and individual liberty. Segregation Opposed ' Since its formation in 1909, the NAACP has opposed ra cial segregation in public ed ucation. We held then, as we do now, that compulsory seg regation cheats Negro child ren of equal educational op portunities, deprives them of "equal protection of the laws," and handicaps them in our competitive free enter prize system. That these children aite eag er to compete has been dem onstrated again and again as they have braved humiliation and violence with dignity and restraint in order to enjoy their right to an unsegregated education, Some have made honor rolls, one in Oklahoma is a valedictorian, and others have gone on to college. The United States needs, now more than ever, to dem onstrate the fairness and free dom of the democratic sys tem. But our Little Rocks and our. mobs are spoiling the im age we seek to present to the world. If the challenge of the The the now THE . The NAACP and Negro Americans will not be satis fied and our country will not be at full strength, physically and spirtually, until every man, woman and child is equal before the law, with no exceptions, no trickery, no de tours. Dr. Clyde Taylor, public affairs secretary for the Na tional Association of Evangel icals, asked a House post of fice subcommittee to look into the possibility. , Taylor was one of the sev eral witnesses from church and civic groups demanding stronger legislation against smut peddlers. Chairman Kathyrn E. Gran ahan (D-Pa.) said she believed immediate action was called for to deal with the entire problem of obscenity. Need For Crusade "This hearing," she said, "should serve to point up the seriousness of the problem and the need for decent citizens everywhere to unite in a cru sade against the dealers of smut and filth whose activities weaken the moral life of this nation." ' u : Only a few days ago, she said, a grand jury in Detroiit returned indictments against three Californians on charges of mailing information on lewd literature, some of which allegedly went to a 15-year-old boy. The action was taken under a new federal law which per mits prosecution at the point of delivery of such material. OVERCOME" BY 'PAY Hawthorne, Fla.
