Use Tribune Want Ads For Action . . . s L and hear plans for an inkling of which the enemy would barter an Army Corps or a battleship. In the brief hours of leisure, which our Army and Navy leaders enjoy, these "civilians" are their closest companions, even sharing their solitary meals with them. Yes, these pals closely guard the secrets entrusted to them and have never been known to betray a confidence. Be sides this, they deserve the wholehearted thanks of their country, because they perform an invaluable service in keep ing up the morale of the men on whom victory depends. Favored Friends These highly favored friends -indispensable because no one else could possibly take their places-are dogs, the beloved pets of our military and naval chieftains. How important they are was proved by the words of General Eisenhower himself. During an inspection tour of the United States camps in England, prior to the Nor mandy invasion, he saw many dogs frisking about. He want ed to stop and pet them all, but military formality for bade. However, when he got back to his headquarters, he said to one of his aides: "I want a dog. I need somebody to talk to and I want some body who can't ask questions about the war and can't re peat what I say, if I say any thing." The aide went out and bought a black Scottie pup. He crept right into Ike's heart the moment he laid eyes on him. Since then Telek, as the General named him, has gone wherever the General goes. Share Enthusiasm Most other Generals share Eisenhower's enthusiasm for dogs. Lit. General Omar N. Bradley, Lt. General George S. Patton Jr., Gen. Joseph Stillwell, Maj. Gen. Claire L. Chenault, Maj. Gen. Elwood Quesada are only a few who would feel lonely indeed if deprived of their pets. It's the other side of the dog. The inside, if you please, rather than the outside. It's the side seen by his friends who forget his external ap pearance, the color of his coat, the lines that tell of pedigree and breeding. To them he is a living thing that loves and answers to those who love him with a devotion and a fidelity that make friendship possible. "Exterminate them!" say some-all the -curs that never ought to have been born.
