Philatelic Mail Bears - . f Covered Wagon Stamp' ,The official philatelic mail being carried oa the Oregon Centennial covered wagon train en route from Independ ence, Mo., to Oregon contain Jetters bearing a special "cov ered wagon stamp." ? - Ivan C. Hoyer, secretary for the South Stamp society. Inc., Cottage Grpve, announced tjiat the stamps have been cancelled by a special "Beaver State" hand cancel device cre ated especially for the ven-. lure. : The mail is being carried under a special postal permit issued by the post office de partment. It will be carried over the Old Oregon trail and be backstamped upon arrival at Independence,' Ore., about Aug. 15 and then be distribut ed by regular mail service. It is believed to be the first mail carried officially over the length of the Trail. The post office department has authorized a second pick up point for mail at Mont pelier, Ida., July 2, and the Cottage Grove society is ac cepting orders from the pub lic for that mailing point. Persons interested in the letters, or "covers" as they Dance Planned I By Promenade rs Star' Fromenaders Square Dance club will hold a dance at Kershaw square on Cory road starting at 8:30 p.m. Sat urday. . Kenneth Hood, Medford, and guest callers will call squares. All square dancers are invited, and potluck re freshments will be served. To raise funds for Med- ford?s School of Hope, a "Cen tennial Varieties" show will be given at Medford High school auditorium Saturday, May 23, at 8 pjn. The event is sponsored by Medford Ac tive club, with the assistance of Thurston's School of Dance, and the public is invited to attend. The program is planned with seven and eight acts to the scene. The comedy, songs and dance will review the last century, in keeping with Ore gon's Centennial, and is de scribed as fast-paced and clever. The numbers include an act by a ventriloquist and other entertainers; all those partici pating are doing so on a vol unteer basis and all proceeds will go to the school. Training Program Said to be the only institu tion of its kind in this area, School of Hope offers a train ing program for children un able to enter public school without first having special training and care. Mrs. Mamie Bloomfield, re tired teacher, has conducted the school since its organiza tion and for the term to open in the fall a teacher with particular training is being secured. The school is now conduct ed in a room at First Method ist church; some of the equip ment is that used for the c h u r c h's kindergarten and other pieces were donated by civic and fraternal organiza tions of the city. Parents interested in learn ing more about the opportuni ties provided by the School of Hope kindergarten may ad dress inquiries to Karl A. Hayes, 1201 Mt. Pitt ave., who is a consultant for the school. Hayes is one of a board of directors of 20 persons work ing with the school. The board also includes ministers, law yers, physicians, other educa tors and parents. are known to stamp collec tors, may make purchases by mailing names and addresses of recipients, along with prop er remittance, to the South Lane Stamp Society, Inc., post office boy 484, Cottage Grove. Friday, May 22, 1959 3 News About Servicemen Poppies Go On Sale Shady Cove-Steelhead post. Veterans of Foreign Wars, and auxiliary are holding the an nual sale of memorial poppies today and Saturday. Proceeds from the sales support the VFW National home, and go into the relief fund of the post and auxiliary. ' Plans for the sale were made at the last meeting of the auxiliary. Mr. and Mrs. James . Cassel, poppy chair men, appointed Mrs. Bertie Alicki as chairman for Shady Cove, Arthur Lewis for the Eagle Point district and Mrs. Harry Birch, Camp White. Elk-Trail school children competed in a poppy poster contest. It was announced that Me morial day services will be held at the Camp White ceme tery May 30 at 1:30 p.m., weather permitting. A Centennial day dance was held at Camp White, June 15. Mr and Mrs. Ed Learning and Mr.' and Mrs. E. H. Cock- rone contributed to the cancer fund in'memory of Mrs. Charles M. Hart, Medford. Mrs. Hart was a niece of Mrs. Learning and Mrs. Cockrone. Mrs. .Phillip Holt, Mrs. Agnes Hubbell and Mrs. Eve Prentice were elected dele gates to the department con vention in Eugene in June. He will be assigned to a unit for' further infantry trammg following completion of basic training. COMPLETES COURSE Army Second Lt. Carl E. Mohr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil H. Mohr, 12 Black Oak dr., recently completed a three-week statistical quality control course at the quarter master school, Ft. Lee, Va. Lt. Mohr, a graduate of Medford High school and Ore gon State college, was trained to test quartermaster items such as petroleum products, office equipment and machin ery before a purchasing decis ion is made. FAN STABS WIFE Hamburg, Germany - (UPD -Cazmierz Stasiak, 48, a Polish national, got together with his estranged wife, Greda, 34, to watch a German-Polish soccer game on television yesterday. Everything went all right un til Greda cheered when the German team tied the score. Stasiak stabbed her twice with a knife. Greda was hospital ized with back injuries.
