1 IMfrWz" ? MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. A Tlwnday, May 21, 15 ' Hatfield Startles Michigan GOP With Tax Stand Lansing, Mich. -UPB- Michi gan's Democratic Gov. G. Mennen Williams gave Ore gon's Republican Gov. Mark O. Hatfield a polka-dot bow tie Wednesday. But he should have pinned medal on Hatfield. Hatfield dropped by for a social call, but before the day was over he was in the midst of Michigan's financial hassle-on Williams' side. Solution To Wen The 36-year-old Republican shook the Michigan GOP when he said he had no use for sales taxes. Michigan Re publicans see a boost in the sales tax as the solution to the state's fiscal woes. What tax does Hatfield like? Why, a graduated income tax, which, it so happens, is just what Williams wants from the GOP-controlled leg islature. "Anything the sales tax can do will be done with a properly established income tax," the trim six-footer said at a news conference. "The sales tax is regressive." Startles GOP Hatfield's remarks startled the state GOP headquarters, which heralded his visit as a chance for Michigan Republi cans to absorb the "philoso phy and approach" of a Re publican who scored an upset victory in November. However, Hatfield empha sized he was speaking "strict ly in the context of Oregon." He told a joint session of the Michigan Legislature, I am not here to tell you how to run your state." Brings Top Hals Hatfield came to town with 100 grey top hats to help Lansing celebrate its centen nial. Oregon is marking its 100th year of statehood In 1959. The Oregon ' Republican chose to wear a Lansing Cen tennial bow tie rather than a -en polka-dot bow present- by Williams. The green Ifta-dot bow is Williams' fide mark. punty People to Attend Meeting I Three Jackson county resl ' i nts plan to be in Sun Val , Idaho, this week end to trend a meeting of "school liprovement leaders" called h the National Citizens , Council for Better Schools.
