Branson gained 30 of the Redskins' 41 -points with firsts in the 100 and 220-yard dashes and in the broad jump Ashland Grabs First Conference Triumph Ashland high baseballers yesterday entered the victory column of the Southern Ore gon conference standings for the first time this season. The Grizzlies downed the Crater Comets 4 to 3. ' Dennis Johnson smashed in the winning run in the top of the extra eighth inning. Dave Jackson had doubled ahead of Johnson and had advanced to third base on an error. Each of the two clubs had three-run inning. Ashland tallied in the opening canto on hits by Harley Dickerson and Jackson, a walk, three er rors and a passed ball. Two of the runs crossed when Jackson's squeeze bunt pop ped over the head of pitcher Wayne Allen, who was charg ing in on the play. Dickerson tallied on the bunt and Pete Stemple scored when Allen's late throw to first got through baseman Jerry Korbol. Crater's runs were in the lecond inning. Wayne. Allen doubled and Korbol, John An horn and Doug Davis were walked in succession by Ash land starting pitcher Bqb Johnson. A run scored when catcher Phil Tucker dropped the ball on a fielder's choice play at the plate when Ed Allen bunted. Third marker came home on a sacrifice fly out by Dennis Pfaff. 4 ' McKinni Strong Alan McKinnis pitched the last 6 1-3 innings for Ashland. " He held the Comets to three hits, walked not a one and struckout seven. Johnson gave up two hits, struck out two and issued five bases on balls. Wayne Allen pitched for Cra ter, allowing eight hits, strik ing out 13, walking four and hitting one. Stemple, Jackson and Wayne Allen each had two hits. Dennis Pfaff, Crater center fielder,' threw out two run ners. He nailed one man going to third and caught a fly ball and threw to second to catch a man off base for a double play. COOLS BLOOD STREAM London DPD British medi cal' authorities Tuesday night reported a new advance in heart surgery which allows the heart to be stopped as long as 45 minutes for deli cafe operations. The new tech nique, known as "hypother mia," involves deep cooling of the blood stream and by passing of the heart, and does not require a heart-lung ma chine. Lowest birth rate in the United States in recent years was 18.4 per thousand in 1933. It rose to 26.6 per thousand in 147 which was a record. Estimates Gladly! CENTER SPORTS Outstanding Honor Goes To Michael Carl Michael, Oregon Class B high school discus cham-. pion, has been named out standing senior athlete at St. Mary's high of Medford. This honor was announced last night at the annual awards dinner at the school gymnasium' for basketball players, trackmen and cheer leaders. Michael gains the Larry Shade award. Presen tation was made by the Very Rev. Carl Mai, pastor of Sa cred Heart Catholic parish. Dick Evans v. ts named out standing player in basketball and track and Don Rausch re ceived that award for foot ball. The inspirational award for all sports went to Dick Theiral. ' Speaker at the dinner was the Rev. Jeremiah Linehan,'' pastor of the Catholic parish at Drain. He pointed to the virtues of loyalty, modesty, calmness, turning1' the other cheek and purity that should be developed by participation in sports. Father Linehan brought out that sports should not be just a safety valve but should have an important role in developing Christian char acter. Trophies Displayed He mentioned the com manding role athletics plays in American lives, speaking of the amount of attention given to televised games, to playing the games and to the reading of sports publications. On display at the dinner were the Little Rogue and Hayward relays, district and state championship trophies won in track and the Jackson County B league title trophy won in baseball. SM trackmen last Saturday won the state B track meet. Presentation of letters and certificates was made by Bill McKibbon, Crusader head coach. He handed the out standing awards to Dick Ev ans and Rausch and the in spirational award to Theiral. Cub Scouts Visit Mail Tribune Plant Members of Den 8, Pack 6, Cub Scouts of Washington and Jefferson schools, visited the Mail Tribune plant yesterday afternoon. They were Dean Hall, Art Forbes, Bobby Drysdale, David Landis, Larry Duysen, Victor Johnson, Wayne Garrett and Kent Duysen. They were ac companied by Mrs. A. E. Hall, den mother, and Mrs. Glen Duysen, assistant den mother, and Maria Jean Hall. Acfor John Ireland -Declares Bankruptcy ' Los Angeles - (UPD - Actor John Ireland Tuesday blamed poor investments for his fi nancial plight which has led to bankruptcy court. Ireland, declaring his debts at $296,142, told bankruptcy referee David B. Head that chief among his poor invest ments was $161,000 he sank in a Phoenix tennis club. His former wife, actress Joanne Dru, also listed among her debts a S190,0CO item in vested in the tennis club when she filed bankruptcy in 1957. BUTTE FALLS Commencement Slated By MARY JO HARRIS Butte Falls Commence ment exercises will be held for the class of 1959 Friday, May 22, at 8 p.m. at the Butte Falls High" school gym. Seniors are the Miss Deloris Brown, Miss Priscilla Poole, Mrs. Lloyd Holm, Mrs. Gene Marley, Laurence Cavin, Tommy Dillard, Gerald Fer guson, and Hugh Kadm. The class motto is "Success Is No Quitter." Class colors are lavender and silver and the class flower is the lilac. The commencement pro gram will open with the Butte Falls school band play ing the processional under the direction of Dean Boggan. The Rev. Leslie Martin of the Assembly of God church will give the invocation, fol lowed by the introduction of the senior class by Jerry Fer guson, student body president. The high school chorus will offer a selection under the di rection of Dean Boggan and accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Walter Doherty. Miss Priscilla Poole will give the valedictorian address and George Bray, 'superintendent of Butte Falls schools, will make the presentation of the citizenship award. The high school chorus w'Jl offer a second selection fol lowed by the main address, "Patterns for Success," by Dr. Alva Graham of Southern Oregon college. Earl Remson, chairman of the school board will present diplomas. - The Rev. Leslie Martin will give the benediction and the recessional will be played by the school band. Dean Boggan will present band awards to members of the grade school band. Thursday, May 21, has been unofficially " proclaimed as eighth grade day in the Butte Falls grade school. Morning program for eighth graders will be orientation at the high school. At 2:30 p.m. ,in the afternoon an award assembly will be held at the grade school. The eighth grade prophesy and will, will be read and athletic awards pre sented. Parents are invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Gus Edmond son recently went to Lake Tahoe, Calif., , where they spent four days visiting their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hall. Guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Harris for Mother's Day included Mr. and Mrs. Bill Barber of Cen tral Point. Mrs. Barber is a daughter of the Harris.
