STANLEY, State Engineer Inquiry Slated For 'Significant' Income Tax Cuts Washington-IUPB-The House Ways and Means Committee is launching an extensive in quiry aimed at "significant" income tax cuts, presumably next year. Chairman Wilbur D. Mills (D.-Ark) said Sunday the com mittee hoped the tax base could be broadened enough to permit "significant reductions in individual and corporation income tax rates -without sac rificing the revenues needed by the government." Before Elections The committee timetable appeared designed to permit congressional action on taxes before the 1960 presidential elections. Democrats and Re publicans alike would like to lay a tax reduction before the voters. President Eisenhower has been hinting at 1960 tax cuts. He said in January, however, that chances for reductions depend largely on the treat ment Congress gave his $77 billion budget. Eisenhower's chief econom ic adviser, Dr. Raymond J. Sauliner, said Sunday that it was still "too early" to give an administration position on tax cut possibilities for next year. Prospect for Surplus He said if the fiscal 1960 budget, for the year begin ning July 1, does end up bal anced as hoped, and the econ omy continues to expand then there would be a prospect for a "small surplus" in fiscal 1960. Saulnier said a surplus could be used either to re duce the national debt or for tax reductions. But, he said, "it's a little previous" to pre dict which path the adminis tration would recommend. Mills said In a statement that his committee's forth coming study will be aimed at "constructive reform" of the federal tax system. Search for Martin Vehicle Called Off The Dalles - (UPD - The search for the station wagon of the missing Martin family of Portland was called off "at least for the present" Sunday afternoon when search at tempts failed. A heavy drag-magnet was used by the Coast Guard in the Columbia river near here, but results were negative. Skin divers also probed the murky depths of the river. Sheriff Ernie Mosier of Wasco county led a 15-man crew in search of the car at the base of a 40-ft. cliff. Tire tracks were found about the cliff partially covered with weeds. The tracks indicated a vehicle might have gone into the water at that point. The bodies of the two youngest Martin' daughters have been recovered from the river. Still missing are Ken Martin, his wife and their oldest daughter, Barbara. Sf . Police Risk Hot Wires To Save Man Portland - (UPD - Three po licemen took a chance on death here Sunday when they pulled a 45-year-old man from an automobile surrounded by hot electric wires. A car driven by Francis A. Fugere struck and broke off an electric pole. The pole landed on top of the vehicle and was carried about 33 feet before the car came to a stop. No wires touched the car, but were hanging around it. "We told him to stay in his car," Patrolman Louis de Gio vanin said, "or he would be a dead man." Helping de Giovanni were patrolman Reginald Bowles and John Traver. Voltage in the wires was estimated at 8300 by PGE and PP&L spokesmen. Both companies had wires on the pole. There are about 2,500 mu seums in the United States to day, compared with 600 in 1932.
