The company, which was founded in Area Food Handlers Attend Open House At Local Warehouse 1915, started operations here when it pur chased the Mason-Ehrman warehouse on Sage rd. About 240 retailers' are served from the warehouse. Food retailers and business firms asociated with the food industry attended an open house at United Grocers, Inc., warehouse facilities at 2195 Sage rd., north of Medford yesterday. The open house was held in observance of the opening of United Grocers, Inc., and its w h o 1 1 y-owned subsidiary, Northwest Grocery company. Food retailers and others as sociated with the food indus try were invited to view -booths and displays at the warehouse. . United Grocers, Inc., which is owned by independent re tail grocers in Oregon, south western Washington and northern California, was founded in 1915, to serve as a centralized buying and ware housing organization. Large Distributor .Today it is one of the largest food distributors in the Pacific northwest trading 'area. United Grocers, in 1958, purchased the Mason-Ehrman company warehouse north of Medford and moved local op erations from Ashland to Medford. The company pur chased the Frideger. Grocery company of Ashland in 1956 and operated there until moving to Medford. About 240 retailers are served at the Medford ware house, according to F. D. Nel son, manager. Deliveries are made to coastal area, in the Grants Pass area, east to Klamath Falls and Lakeview and in northern California. The warehouse operation here employes a staff of 54 full time employees, with an annual payroll of about $300, 000, Nelson said. 1 WOMAN'S PRIVILEGE London (UPD Lady Astpr, England's America n-born woman politician, will be 80 years old Tuesday, but she'll cut no cake that shows up with 80 candles. Mundt Charges Demo Harassment Washington -(UPD A Repub lican senator has accused Democrats of waging a polit ical campaign of "harass ment" against commerce sec retary Lewis L. Strauss and other appointees of President Eisenhower. Sen. Karl E. Mundt (R S.D.) charged Sunday that the Senate democratic leadership had given its "full blessing" to such a campaign in an ef fort "to embarrass" Presiden tial nominees. Mundt predicted that Og den R. Reid, former president and editor of the New York Herald Tribune, would re ceive "the same treatment" on his nomination to be U.S. Ambassador to Israel. The senate commerce com mittee is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the Strauss nomi nation. Many observers have given Strauss ' only slightly better than a 50-50 chance of winning senate confirmation. 10 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. Monday, May 18, 1959 No Change in Dulles' Condition . Washington -(UPD- No major change has been reported in the condition of John Foster Dulles in his fight against cancer. The last word on the for mer secretary of state came from friends who said Satur day he was growing weaker with each passing day. The State Department said there was nothing to report Sunday and that no announce ment would be made unless there were "a major change" in Dulles' condition. The 71-year-old diplomat, who is at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, was said to be receiving pain - killing drugs. The State Department an nounced Friday that compli cations caused by pneumonia had persisted and that there had been "some further de cline in his general condi tion." Dulles' family has been here the past week. FRIENDLY ATTITUDE ' Moscow - (UPD - A Russian medical professor said in an interview today that a recent trip to the United States con vinced him many Americans seek friendship with the So viet Union. Prof. F. Uglov, of the Leningrad Institute of Medicine, made the statement in an interview with Tass, the official Soviet news agency. Eyeglasses were invented around the end of the 13th. century. Mrs. Harry Truman Undergoes Surgery Kansas City, Mo. -(UPD-Mrs. Harry S. Truman, wife of the former president, undergoes surgery today at Research Hospital for an undisclosed ailment. Mrs. Truman, 74, entered the hospital last Thursday for tests and a "routine check up." The troublesome condi tion was discovered during the diagnostic tests. Although the nature of the surgery was not revealed, Dr. Wallace Graham, 'the family doctor and White House phy sician , when Truman was president, earlier said that Mrs. Truman would be in the hospital "quite a while." DIES AT PLAY New Orleans -(UPD- Funeral services were scheduled today for three-year-old Robert Hay den who was strangled acci dentally in his- backyard. Po lice said a loose chain from a gym set apparently wrapped around his neck as he played on a slide. Chemical Week, in a survey on the sulphur industry, fore casts over-supply at the year end, but holds prospects are good for long-term supply-demand balance. Standard v & Poor's finds continued strong improve ment in demand for indus trial chemicals is likely over the coming months with 1959 volume rising some 10 to 12 per cent over 1958; further gains expected in paper pro duction in the coming months; capacity output in dicated for rayon and acetate yarn. O' Conner, 38, a truck driver from Giltner, Neb., was held for questioning today in con nection with a murder in Rome, Ore. The victim, Thomas Potter, 62, San Francisco, was found beaten to death in a Rome motel - Saturday. The motel register showed that O'Con ner and Potter checked into the motel Friday, according to Oregon authorities. O'Conner was arrested late Saturday when he attempted to cash several travelers checks bearing the victim's name. Police said they found Potter's car abandoned near Winnemucca, Nev. Oregon authorities said Potter, a Southern Pacific Railroad employe, may have been killed with one of the specimens of rock which he collected as a hobby. O'Conner had several rocks in his pocket when he was arrested here, but he refused to comment on the slaying.
