Shasta 243 to 324 Satur day in matches at Rogue Val ley Country club with Cali fornia teams. Mike Monroe was medalist for the day with a 74 for Medford against Weed. Other Tornado scores were Larry Brown and Pete Rasmussen each 80, Darrell Miller 81, and Jack Joyce 84. Dennis Sbarbaro had 82 for Weed and Richard Grandstrom 87, Rob ert Johnson 87, Gary Sbarba ro 109 and Ree Recuts 123. Craig Miller led Medford with a 78 in the three-man tilt with Mt Shasta. Bob Jones hand an 80 and Stan Dowson 85. Mt. Shasta scores were Pat McCanou 94, Dave Abbe 104 and Gary Hines 126. Veeck's Chicago White Sox took some of the steam out of the front - running Indians Sunday when they scored 5-4 and 5-0 victories and complet ed a sweep of a three - game series. It was the first severe jolt the Indians have suffered this year and the two wins boosted the White Sox to within 1M games of the Am erican league lead. Billy Pierce and Early Wynn, each going all put this year to win back salary cuts, were the big heroes as the White Sox beat Veeck's ex- club for . the 1 sixth time in eight tries. Pierce went the distance in the 11-inning op ener while Wynn fired a four hitter to gain the 253rd vic tory of his major league car eer in the nightcap. The New York Yankees moved to within two games of the .500 mark by beating the Washington Senators, 6-3 and 3-2, the Boston Red Sox swept the Baltimore Orioles, 3-2 and 5-1, and the Detroit Tigers downed the Kansas City Ath letics, 7-6, in the other Ameri can league games. Braves Take Lead : In the National league, the Milwaukee Braves regained first place with 12-4 and 2-1 wins over the Cincinnati Reds, the Los Angeles Dodg ers shaded the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, the St. Louis Cardinals came back from a 10-9 loss to defeat the Chi cago Cubs, 8-7, and the Phil adelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-3. The Pirates led 6-4 when the nightcap was halted by cur few in the eighth inning. Bubba Phillips sent the Chicago - Cleveland opener into extra innings with an eighth-inning homer and then singled in the winning run in the 11th inning Pierce yielded 13 hits but left 12 In dians stranded. Wynn struck out five in the nightcap as he raised his record to 4-2. Nel son Fox hit safely in both games to stretch his hitting streak to 16 games and Del Ennis hit his first American league homer for the White Sox. Ryne Duren's brilliant re lief pitching saved the Yan kee opener for Whitey Ford and Norm Siebern delivered the game-winning hit in the second game when he doubled home Mickey Mantle in the 10th inning. Yogi Berra caught in both games and set a major league record by ap pearing in 148 straight games without making an error. The Yankees have won four out of their last five games. Buddin's Homer Decisive Don Buddin homered in the 10th inning to win the first game for the Red Sox and Frank Baumann hurled a six hitter in the night-cap. Relief pitcher Leo Kiely picked up his second win in the first game and Baumann delivered a liases-filled triple on his own behalf in the second game. The Tigers won their sev enth decision in eight games under Jimmy Dykes as Rocky Bridges, Charlie Maxwell and Lou Berberet hit homers. Rog er Maris drove in five runs with two homers for Kansas City. The Braves knocked the Reds out of first place, scor ing seven runs in the eighth inning of the opener and win ning the second game when Hank Aaron singled with the bases filled and two out in the ninth. Don McMahon's stout relief work saved Bob Rush's second victory in the first game and Carlton Willey outpitched Joe Nuxhall in the second. Aaron went 5-for-10 and knocked in three runs during the doubleheader. Podres wins Fourth Rip Repulski and Charlie Neal homered for the Dodg ers as Johnny Podres, helped by late-inning relief from Clem Laoine, won his fourth game. Felipe Alou accounted for both Giant runs when he homered - after a double by Willie Mays in the eighth in ning. Mike McCormick suf fered the loss. Earl Averill's 11th inning homer won the first game for the Cubs and a ninth-inning single by Curt Flood produc ed the decisive blow for the Cardinals in the nightcap. Gino Cimoli had four hits in the first game and three in the second. Manager Solly Hemus announced the Card inals were playing the first game under protest on the basis of what he thought was an obstruction of a Cardinal baserunner in the 10th in ning. Bobby Thomson drove in the six runs for the Cubs in the first game. Harry Anderson's two-run triple was the big blow for Philadelphia as Robin Rob erts won his third (am and Bob Friend, a 22-game win ner last season, lost his sixth straight decision of this sea son. Smoky Burgess drove in four runs with a homer and a double to give the Pirates their lead in the nightcap. Marks Fall In UO-OSC Track Tilt Corvallis (UPD Oregon's strong track and field team defeated Oregon State on Bell field here Saturday for the 11th straight time, 79 16 to 51 56. There were four meet marks and four Bell field rec ords broken. The freshman meet was held at the same time with the varsity meet and Oregon's frosh turned in an upset by beating both varsities in the mile relay. The Frosh beat the Rooks 75V4-56V2. With Dyrol Burleson run ning anchor, the Frosh turned in a time of 3:22.8. Oregon won the varsity meet in a time of 3:25.1. Burleson Shines Burleson, the talented frosh miler, turned to the 880 and set a new Bell field mark of 1:51.7. The old mark was 1:52.9 set by Cliff Cordy of Oregon State last year. Oregon's 1-2 punch in the mile, Jim Grelle and George Larson, were just that. Grelle ran a 4:1112 mile to break the meet mark he set last year of 4:12.5. Darrell Horn of OSC and Steve Anderson of Oregon, tied in the broad jump with a leap of 25 feet Vi inch. It was the first time Anderson had been over 25 feet. Horn has done 26-6. j Cliff Cordy, OSC, ex-Crater high, set a new varsity meet record Saturday in the dual with University of Oregon. His time was 1:53.8. Among ex - Medford high athletes performing, Neil Plumley was second in the shot put for the'OSC varsity, D. C. Mills second in the jave lin for Oregon and Wilcey Winchell was anchor on the winning Oregon mile relay team. In the Frosh-Rook meet Jim Maryott, Oregon and ex Grants Pass high, won the high hurdles and was third in the lows. Fred Thomas, ex Grants Pass, of the Frosh, won the high jump and Jerry Stub blefield, ex-Ashland, was sec ond in the 100 and 220-yard dashes and first in the discus for the Frosh. MEDF05tIU3TRIBUNI Seattle Wins Fifth Extra-Inning Tiff; Portland Tips Bees By DON BECKER United Press International The Seattle Rainiers may not be going anywhere in the Pacific Coast league standings, but they have to be classed as one of the most exciting clubs in the league. The Rainiers' specialty is extra inning ball games. They've had seven of them so far this year and three of their last five games have gone into extra stanzas. Sunday, in what was scheduled as a seven-inning nightcap in their twin bill with San Diego, the Rainiers went 13 innings before they pulled it out on Jack Ditt mer's two-out single to win, 3-2. Friday the Rainiers went 21 innings before they beat Phoenix, 6-5. The Suds are good at the extra inning con tests, though Freddy Hutch inson, their manager, would probably be happier if they just played it straight and won 'em in regulation time. They've won five, lost one, and tied Salt Lake in an 18 inning affair, 1-1. Sacs Keep Lead Sacramento maintained its one game lead over the pack Sunday as it split a double header with Spokane. The In dians laced the Solons in the first game, 9-2, only to have the situation reversed in the second game, 11-4. San Diego won the first game from Seattle, 10-1, to gain a split in its twin bill and hold onto second place. Vancouver moved into third place on the strength of a pair of decisions over Phoe nix, 4-1, and 9-0. Portland edged Salt Lake, 2-1, in the only single contest of the day. Russ Heman, of recent no hit fame, was tagged with the loss in the extra-inning con test at Seattle. He came on in the sixth inning for Stan Pitula, and gave up a single run in the 10th and the losing marker in the 13th. Paul Pettit beat out an in field single with one out to start Heman on his downfall. Eddie Kazak blooped one into center, and then with two down, Dittmer socKea a ground single to right-field to chase across Pettit. Billy Kennedy, who came on for Seattle in the 11th inning, was credited with the win. Bilko Has Big Day Carl Greene racked up his third straight win as the Solons took the second game of their twin bill. He pitched eight hit ball and hit a home run. Bob Perry hit a three run homer for the Sacs and Steve Bilko of Spokane,' con nected for a circuit clout, Bilko collected six hits in eight trips during the after noon. Bilko, who got three hits, and Al Norris.'who collected his second home run in as many games, led the Indians to their 9-2 win in the first game. Connie Grob got his win, going all the way. Fred Besana of Vancouver won his fourth straight deci sion as he shut out Phoenix in their second game. He gave up five singles. Besana has given up just four earned runs in 41 innings for pitching this season. Joe Taylor socked a homer and Conine Johnson went all the way on the mound as the fast-rising Mounties grabbed the first game, 4-1. Bob DiPietro belted a 10th inning homer to give Portland its 2-1 win over Salt Lake. Dave Melton had earlier tied the scpre at 1-1 with a home run. Ken Johnson got the win and Bob Hall was tagged with his first loss of the season. Duck Nine Trips WSC .Pullman (UPD Oregon bounced back into the North ern division baseball race here Saturday by shutting out Washington State 2-0 behind the fine pitching of Hugh Springer and Jack Loy. Springer handcuffed the Cougars with only three hits, but needed help from Loy in the ninth to gain the win. Loy came on with two cougars on, and one out, and retired the next two batters to retire the threat. Oregon won the game in the fifth inning, when it scored two runs on three hits, and a squeeze bunt by pitcher Springer. The win gives the Ducks a record of 6-3. WSC has a 6-6 mark. Oregon State is first with 5-2 and Washington 7-3. DRYSDALE FINED San Francisco Los Ange les Dodgers manager Walter Alston confirmed today that pitcher Don Drysdale has been fined $50 for hitting Willie Mays of the Giants with a pitch, but wondered why Sam Jones hadn't been fined also for hitting Norm Larker. The incidents took place during Saturday's game here. They nicked Eugene 5 to 4 at Eugene yesterday after grabbing the Saturday game 3 to 1. v On Sunday Ellen Calla ghan tossed fire hit ball for the Maids, fanning 11 and walking six while Doris Hickson and Jan Bateman each hit two for four with Miss, Bateman socking a two-bagger. Eugene tossers walked two and whiffed two and Carolyn Jones dou bled. A last inning run by the Maids protected them against a threat by McCul loch. HANSON DRIVES IN TWO Shirley Hanson hit two for three and drove in two runs and Miss Hickton sin gled home the other run on Saturday night. Pat Barron of Rogue Valley and Lois Winn of Eugene tossed four hitters with the Dairy Maid thrower striking out two and walking four and her mound foes fanning six and issuing two free passes. The Dairy Maids will have their home opener at the Camp While diamond next Saturday and Sunday. They meet American Linen of Portland. George Larson Receives Honor Eugene-flJPDGeorge Larson, sophomore miler from Scap poose, Saturday was named winner of the 1959 Doyle Hig don award, made in honor of the late Cottage Grove ath lete who was killed in a sum mer logging accident. Just before Los Angeles de feated them Sunday, 3-2, they announced that Rhodes was being called up from their Phoenix farm club in the Pa cific Coast league. The man who had to go in order that the roster remain at the legal limit was Bob Speake. The Giants released him outright to Phoenix.
