It is a revolution in forest industry methods and con cepts, a vast shifting into the growing era of technology and tree farming. Its beginnings are woven far back into Ore Master Degrees in Librarianshtp Are Granted at University of Permission to confer a mas ter of arts or science degree with a major in library sci ence has been granted the school of education, Univer sity of Oregon, Eugene, it was announced this week. Although the new program will not be fully implemented before the fall of 1960, it is possible for a person planning a master's course with a li brary science major to make a beginning towards it this summer, according to the in formation received. Among courses to be of fered during the summer at the university are elementary bibliography and reference materials, and organization of school library materials, (be ginning cataloging). The two courses are prerequisites to courses necessary in the grad uate program for school or public librarians. Graduate Study x All other courses to be of fered this summer carry grad uate credit, which will ' ap ply on the new program should a person decide to be come a candidate for the mas ter's degree. They include school library administration, books and related materials for young people, children's literature, storytelling, read ing and conference. Approach to Old Age Disabilities Is Being Pioneered by VA A remarkably effective medical approach to overcom ing the disabilities of old age is being pioneered in Veter ans Administration hospitals, Henry C. Herzog, manager, VA Domiciliary, Camp White, said today. , Essentially an adaption of rehabilitation techniques de veloped for wounded and emotionally disturbed veter ans following World War II, the treatment is keyed to both emotional and physical as pects, Herzog said. Through therapy giving ex ercise to both the body and the mind, even oldsters with severe disabilities often are enabled to care for them selves to some degree and to take their rightful places in Lsociety again. rTeam Method For example, Herzog said, a unique and effective team method for treating aging long-term patients has been developed at the Dayton, VA center. Nurses, nursing assistants, ward secretaries, psycholo gists, and other staff members of the Dayton hospital unite with physicians in a team ap proach. The Dayton program has proved so successful that Ohio state health department pub lic health nurses, and nurs ing nuns of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor are visiting the hospital to ob serve the rehabilitation tech niques. VA hospitals are. one of the nation's major- resources for medical care of the aging. With an average daily pa tient load of about 111,000 veterans, nearly half of whom are 55 years or older, the agency's 171 hospitals have a heavy responsibility for de- O Birch O Senwood Mahogany much of the first wealth which struggling pioneers coming into the region could readily convert into capital. Development Oregon The only western library schools accredited by the Am erican Library association are the University of Cali fornia school of librarianship at Berkeley, Calif., the Uni versity of Denver school of librarianship at Denver, Colo., the University of Southern California school of library science at Los Angeles, Calif., and the University of Wash ington school of librarianship at Seattle. Overcoming velopment of treatment of this- sort, Herzog noted. Consider Needs He added that the VA re habilitation programs for hos pitalized oldsters begin where usual medical treatment for acute illnesses leaves off, are planned to consider the needs of the whole person, and draw on the services of the entire hospital staff of skilled per sonnel and of volunteers from the community. Responsibility for the sick and disabled veteran includes promotion of a more effective philosophy in the community toward the human process of aging and the illnesses that accompany it, Herzog said, adding: "Through a nationwide net work of VA Voluntary Ser vice, we are taking steps to encourage community envir onment and facilities that will better meet the needs of ag ing disabled veterans and en able more of them to spend their remaining years outside of hospital wards." Already forest industry managers are look ing forward to the day of hel icopter logging, genetically bigger and 'better "super trees" and other scientific strides. Brings New Concepts Growth of the industry brought with it new concepts in forest management, and the industry-sponsored Tree Farm program was born in the Pa cific Northwest in 1941. Un der this program private for est landowners are recognized for protecting their timber from fire, insects and disease and managing it to produce sustained-yield timber har vests. ; The Tree Farm program, sponsored east of the Cascades by Western Pine association and west of the Cascades by Industrial Forestry associa tion, passed the 4 million-acre mark in Oregon last year. Sam Robb, Willamette Val ley Lumber company, chair man of the Oregon Committee of American Forest Products Industries, points out that the Beaver State - with about one fifth of the nation's sawtim ber supply - has gene rated a forest industry that gives full-time jobs to 63 per cent of, the state's industrial em ployees, some 87,000 workers, plus thousands of others in re lated industries. Hagenstein, ex ecutive . vice president of In dustrial Forestry 'association, said Oregon's and Washing ton's foresti ndustry can pro vide still another 50,000 jobs and push its annual payroll up to $1 billion. Increasing timber growth is apparent every wfiere, E. L. Kolbe, chief forester for West ern Pine association,- said. Scores of growth study plots on industry Tree Farms are now coming up for 10-year measurement, he said, and many foresters are having to revise upward their estimates of the timber production po tential of their managed forest lands. For the past 20 years, Ore gon has led all other states in the nation in providing tim ber for a wood-hungry nation.
