) MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford1, Or. Sunday, May 10, 1959 Larger Number Of Cities Raising Service Charges Eugine - An increasing number of cities and water districts are raising water rates and sewer service charges, according to a survey by the University of Oregon bureau of municipal research and service. The survey, done in cooper ation with the League of Ore gon Cities, is published in a pamphlet entitled "Water Rates and Sewer Charges." It covers practices in 185 cities and 50 water districts in Ore gon. A growing number of cities are metering water service to conserve the resource and to relate charges more closely to the cost of providing service. Increasing emphasis on reduc ing water pollution has made necessary construction or en largement of sewage disposal plants, and this has resulted in several cities adopting for the first time or increasing sewer service charges. Increase Rates Since 1952, 74 cities and 30 water distircts have increased water rates, and 26 cities have increased sewer service charges. Minimum monthly metered water rates for 200 cubic feet of water range from 70 cents to $4 in cities, and from $1.25 to $5 in water districts. The median monthly charge is $2.25 in cities and $2.40 in water districts. Minimum monthly residential sewer service charges range from 28 cents to $6. Medford charges a $2.50 flat rate for residential cus tomers, and a rate of $1.80 for 200 cubic feet for both residential and commercial customers inside the city. Sewer service charges are at a minimum flat rate of 50 cents, according to the survey. Many cities do not provide direct service to customers outside city , limits. Higher rates are generally charged for such service. Salmon Fishermen Accept Dealer Bid San Francisco - (UPD - San Francisco and Watsonville area salmon fishermen Thurs day accepted a dealer offer of 32-50 cents a pound for their catch, ending a two-week tie-up of the 125-boat fleet. PLATTER CLEANED At the . supper fol lowing the regular meeting of the Eagle Point Grange Tuesday, members made quick work of a heaping platter of bear meat sand wiches that were served to create a Cen tennial touch. The bear, provided by gov ernment trapper Kirby Tant and prepared by Mrs. C. C. Hoover, was so tasty that no one even winced when it was finally an Fire Ant Isn't Harmful, But Poison Spray Is Even if you live right in the very middle of the worst in fested area of tropical fire ants in the United States, your chance of being fatally at tacked or even seriously bit ten by this insect is just about as remote as your chance of riding a guided missile into outer space. Exaggeration and fear fanned into a smokeless, false blaze by misdirected informa tion, and half truths, has brought about a condition whereby some gullible folks are afraid to enter a field, or even venture out intOi their own back yards,' for fear of being attacked by fire ants. As ridiculous as it sounds, it is surprising to listen to stories told by seemingly intelligent people about these imported pests from Argentina. Fire ants are native to this South American country, and down there they are not considered a pest at all. In fact they are said to be helpful in the con trol of other insects. When I indicated my inten tion of entering a field where a couple of score of fire ant mounds gave evidence of a rather heavy infestation, sev eral people told me I wouldn't have a chance of escape if I disturbed any of the "nests." These people told me if I prodded a nest, even with a long stick, I would be com pletely covered with fire ants, and severely if not fatally bit ten before I could" get out of the field. Heard It Before I had heard this before, as well as the equally question able tale of the destruction of wildlife wherever the ants were present. However, and in direct contradiction to the repeated stories about nesting birds, I found quail nests as well as the nests -of several song birds in the area. Later, a closer observation revealed the fact that the birds all hatched young, and the young were NOT attacked by the fire ants that were present in con siderable numbers. Without doubt more quail, fish, song birds and other forms of wildlife have been destroyed by the spraying of dieldrin . and heptachlor poi sons than would possibly be killed by fire ants. It is ironic that the proponents of the wholesale spraying programs argued that the fire ants were destroying all young birds in the nests. Changing Thinking . Responsible people in the southeastern United , States, where the tropical fire ant is now present, are re-evaluating their thinking, and are insist ing no more dangerous poi sons shall be spread over the landscape until suitable meth ods have been devised that "will protect wildlife as well as humans. The tropical fire ant came up from South America a few SOMETHING'S MISSING Buffalo, N.Y. -4DPD Judge Michael E. Zimmer listened nearly three hours while the defense and prosecution ques tioned police officers in a speeding case, and then ren dered a verdict of guilty. But he quickly changed the rul ing to "no trial" when he dis covered that the '. defendant, John T. Irvin, hadn't bothered to show up in court. New York, the nation's leading industrial . state, has twice as many manufacturing establishments as California, which ranks second. , Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M. Watkins years ago, and inysome sec tions has increased in num bers, snreadine out in a south and east direction. The bite of the insect stings like fire. The ant is reddish in color, with a large head, a powerful pair of biting jaws. But there is prob ably more danger, both to humans as wellvas to fish, song birds and wildlife in the poi sons designed to kill the ant than to the ant itself.
