Valley Presbyterians Tell Sunday Topics Sunday morning at both services of the First Presby terian church Dr. D. Kirkland West, pastor, will speak on "Christian Homes Are No Accident". At the 11 a.m. service the chancel choir will sing the anthem, "For All the Saints" and Mrs. Bill Williams and Lynn Sjolund, violinists, will play the "Andante" from Tschaikowsky's 5th Symphony at both the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services. The church membership course will meet Sunday at 4 p.m. with the adults being taught by Dr. West and the youth class by the Rev. John Reynolds. Nursery care for pre-school children will be provided. Junior High Fellowship will meet at 5:30 p.m. for a dis cussion of programs for the summer. Westminster Fellowship will gather at 7 p.m. for worship after which the last in a series of meetings on Christian the ology will be held. MISSIONARIES Central Point-A story of be ing put in jail for preaching the gospel will be told at the Sunday service at the Com munity Bible church, Fourth and Alder sts., Central Point, at 7:30 p.m., by visiting mis sionaries, the Rev. and Mrs, John Aerni of France and Spain. Their story will also include pictures and slides of their work. Mr. and Mrs Aerni are Swiss, this is Mr. Aerni's first time in America. byterian church Sunday dur ing the 11 a.m. worship service. Baby Dedication Scheduled Sunday At the Friends Church Sun day in the 9:45 and 11 am worship services Pastor Clyn- ton Crismac will speak on "Christian Marriage," as sym bolized in the Bible by the relationship between Christ and the church. There will be a dedication service for babies, a tradition al Mothers Day feature. Par ents who wish to participate are asked to notify the pastor. The youth choir will sing at 9:45 and the adult choir at 11 ajn. Junior church will be conducted by Mrs. P. K. Nel son. "Bring Mother to Sunday School" is the slogan for the children in observance of Sun day's holiday. Sunday school is held for children and adults at 9:45 a.m. and for junior high through college age youth at 11. Concluding services of the. day will be Christian Endeav or at 6:30 pan. and public praise and worship service at 7:30 pan. with the-pastor bringing the message. The third grade girls Sun day, school class, taught by Mrs. Floyd Ditch, will give a party in honor of their mothers in the church social hall this evening at 7:30 o'clock. Nazarenes Honor Mother's Day A Sunday school committee, with Mrs. Lulu Larson chair man, has made arrangements for recognition of all mothers of the Sunday school for Moth er's Day, May 10, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st. A mystery memento will be given each mother present, with gifts for the oldest, youngest, and the mother with the oldest child present in the recognition assembly scheduled for 10:40 am. The sermon series on the doctrine of entire salification will be conducted, with Sun day s sermon to deal with a message directed to mothers in the congregation. In the service at 7 pjn., an organ solo will be played by Marilyn Shepard. Youth del egates will give brief reports of the annual convention rec ently held in Roseburg. Nazarenes Elect Society President Mrs. Lucille Monroe, 316 West Clark st., was elected this week to succeed Mrs. Mabel Johnson as president of the Nazarene Foreign Mis sionary society in the First Church of the Nazarene. The retiring president, Mrs. John son, had served for five years in this post. Mrs. Monroe has served in various capacities in the Mis sionary Society through the years. She has served as other sheep chairman for one year, chapter chairman. of the Kath- eryn Dixon chapter for two years, and study chairman of the Katheryn Dixon chapter for four years. A Friday, May t, 1959 Advent isis to Aid Relief Fund Here Saturday Seventh-day Adventists will take "canned money" with them to services in their churches throughout the val ley Saturday morning. Brightly colored cans, bear ing the picture of a Korean orphan with an empty rice bowl,' were distributed a num ber of weeks ago to be placed on church members' tables as a reminder, while they par took of the abundance avail able in North America, of the multitudes in many lands who are hungry and homeless. May 9 has been set aside for a disaster and famine relief offering to aid such unfor tunates. Funds received Saturday will supplement the disaster and relief work carried on regularly by churches throughout North America. MV Meeting Missionary Volunteer meet ing will be held at 4:30 pjn. in the Valley View church, under the leadership of Leon Christensen. Theme of the afternoon's program will be "God in Nature," nad will fea ture a talk by Tom Kennedy, and a nature quiz by Pastor John Trude. At 7:45 p.m. the choir and band of Rogue River academy will present a Mother's Day program in the Lincoln school gymnasium, 608 North Bart- lett st. Other departments of the school will also participate in honorning the mother pres ent in song and verse. St. Luke's Tell Sunday Sermon The topic of the Mother's Day sermon to be given by the Rev. ' During the service at 11 ajn. the eldest mother and mother with the largest fam ily present will receive cor sages. The choral ensemble will sing. Officers Elected at Business Meeting In the annual business meeting, conducted last Wed nesday evening, members of the First Church of the Naza rene elected officers to serve for the coming year. Bill Brewster was re-elect ed as Sunday school superin tendent. Those elected to serve as trustees included John Dean, Clarence Starkey, Loyd Arnold, Ken Laurance, Henry Paulson, Al Larson, Russell Speer, Jim Kerns, and Dean von Stem. Central Point Group To Honor Mothers Central Point-The "mother of the year" for the Central Point Church of Christ will be announced Sunday during the 10:45. ajn: worship ser vice. Monday at 8 p.m. the church council will meet 1957 Award or Merit Winner Church Retains Minister By Congregational Vote At a business meeting of the Congregational church fol lowing the morning service last Sunday the congregation refused to accept the resigna tion of the Rev. Thomas Mc Camant. ' In presenting his resigna tion, Ms. McCamant stated that he felt that after five years a change in leadership would be stimulating to the growth of the church. Since Jacksonville Church Will Honor Mothers Jacksonville Sunday morning the Assembly of God church, Jacksonville, will honor the mothers present, each one will receive a gift and the hymns will be the fa vorites of the mothers pres ent. Pastor E. W. Irby will peak on the subject 'Mother's Place". The monthly Fellowship meeting of the Assembly of God Churches in the Rogue Valley will be held in Jack sonville Monday, May 11. The Rev. R. E. Cull, presbyter, will be in charge of the serv ices at 2:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Vacation Bible School Scheduled by 1st Baptists Vacation Bible school at First Baptist church, North Central ave. at Fifth st., will be held in two sections this year. . BURBANK Revival Speaker Free Methodists Conduct Revival The Free Methodist church is currently conducting a se ries of revival meetings with the Rev. C. W. Burbank, Everett, Wash., speaker. Mr, Burbank is a pastor, superin tendent, evangelist and church administrator. The meetings begin each evening, except Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Sundays he will speak at 11 ajn. and 7:45 pjn. Methodists Schedule Mother's Day Topic "The Challenge of Mother hood" will be the Sunday ser mon topic at First Methodist church by Dr. George G. Rose- berry for the Mother's Day services. The entire family is asked to attend worship serv ices with mother Sunday. The youth choir will sing "Holy- Lord of All" and the chancel choir will sing "Holy Lord . God." L Lor CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Council the congregation rejected this idea he accepted their deci sion and will continue as pas tor. Gatewood Smith is chair man of a committee that was appointed to make plans for extending and strengthening the over-all program of the church. It has met and made suggestions which will be passed on to the members after being considered by the boards of deacons and trus tees. Delegates Elected The congregation also elect ed as delegates to the annual meeting of the Congregational Conference of Oregon, Mrs. Henry Padgham, Mrs. Clar ence Miller, Carl Elhart and Richard Henselman. The meet ing will be in Portland, May 18 through 20. The church continues to hold church school and its morning service at 10 ajn. For Mothers Day in this Cen tennial year the minister will take as his theme, "Pioneer Mothers". Sunday evening the Pilgrim Fellowship will con tinue their discussions of "Genesis and Science" tendent of this group. Apostolic Faith to Hear Missionaries Missionaries from the West Indies, the Rev. Forrest Dam ron and the Rev. Melvin Frost, will show color pic tures at the Apostolic Faith church, Third st., and Central ave., Tuesday, May 12 at 8 p.m. Both of the missionaries are of the Grants Pass Apostolic Faith church. During the past eight months they have traveled from Georgetown, British Guiana, South Ameri ca, up through Haiti and Dominican Republic, Jamai ca, and other smaller islands to Havana, Cuba. They will tell of their work throughout the Islands. The public is invited to at tend. SERMON TOPIC "Adam and Fallen Man' will be the sermon subject Sunday at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, at 11 ajn at the church, 100 Windsor ave. Everyone is welcome to attend. Unitarians Set Sunday Meeting' Dr. William M. McKinney will speak on the subject "An thropology and Religion" at the next meeting of the Rogue Valley Unitarian Fellowship. The talk will stress the basic principles of primitive reli gion and present a compari son between primitive and high culture religions. Dr. McKinney teaches in the Social Science depart ment at Southern Oregon col lege. He is a newcomer to the area, having moved here last fall from Georgia. The meeting will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry De Voss, Rapp lane, Talent. The meeting is open to the public. Oldest Protestant Mission Changes To Native Church One of the most significant trends in modern Christianity will be spotlighted next week when the oldest U. S. Protes tant mission in the Middle East goes out of business. Its passing will be cele brated rather than mourned. For it is turning over its work - as well as its personnel and property - to a native Arab Christian church. In a ceremony in Beirut next Wednesday, U. S. Pres byterians and Congregational- ists will surrender control ov er a million dollars worth of churches, hospitals and schools, including two col leges, which they have built in Syria and Lebanon under a joint missionary effort be gun in 1823. Stay On Job The 57 American mission aries now attached to these institutions will remain on the job, but they will henceforth be "fraternal workers" under the authority of the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon. - . The United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and the Congregationalist Board of Foreign Missions will con tinue to give financial support to the work in Syria and Leb anon, but it will be channeled through the native church. The change-over is the lat est of a series of such moves by major " U. S. Protestant bodies. Similar transfers of Mission personnel and prop erty have previously taken place in. India, Japan, Thai land, The Philippines, Cam eroun, and several other areas of Asia and Africa. Behind this trend is a con viction that Christianity needs a bold news concept of its global mission if it is to make any headway against the strong nationalist tide running in Asia and Africa. Takes Long Time ' In many countries, the Christian Gospel is being re jected because it is identified as an "export" of the Western white man. There is a grow ing disposition among Asians and Africans to regard Ameri can - controlled foreign mis sions as a form of spiritual imperialism." A century of missionary effort has succeeded, however, in planting native Christian churches in nearly every coun try of Asia and Africa. These indigenous churches are weak in membership, resources and trained clergy. But many of them are fired by a zeal for the Christian faith that the pastors of U. S. churches would dearly love to see equalled in their own congre gations. Salvation Army Sets Sunday Services The Salavation Army will conduct Sunday services in honor of Mother's day. The service will commence at 9:45 a.m. with the Sunday school children giving recita tions and singing songs in honor of their mothers. A Mother's day message by Senior Capt. William Ricken will conclude the service. The other service will com mence at 7:45 pjn. with Lt David Petersen speaking on the subject, "Putting Mother into Who's Who."
