rfAIL TRIBUNE. Medford, Of. 0 Thursday, May 7, 1959 A Foreign Ministers j3) oq oo Try Anew f r v JFi v 7i vy At Geneva Site Geneva -(CPU- Foreign min isters of the United States, Britain, France and Russia will be trying to weld a new spirit of Geneva on the very gravestone of the old when they meet here . beginning May 11. They will stay at the same hotels by the side of Lake Geneva and make the same daily five-minute pre-confer-ence drive to the same rooms in the sprawling, sand-colored Palais des Nations where heads of the same four govern ments met at the Summit in 1955. Fals Impression That encounter produced the stillborn hopp and false impression still dubbed the "Spirit of Geneva" - that an end to the cold war was in sight. When the foreign ministers take their seats in the flam boyantly decorated Palais council chamber, its giant windows facing the lake and the always-white summit; of Mount Blanc, Europe's highest mountain, there will be no such delusions. But there is an elusive qual ity to the Palais des Nations, Europe's largest building (only the Louvre Museum in Paris approaches its size). Major Failures It has seen major failures and only minor victories since it first .was built in the 1930's to house the ill-fated League of Nations. But it never seems to stifle hope. In its more than 800 offices and 20-odd conference rooms the United Nations and a host of other international organ izations are ' carrying on a workaday effort at interna tional cooperation that could ; well set an example to the foreign ministers. If a further stimulus to the ministers is needed, it is pro vided by Spanish artist Jose Maria Sert's brown and gold tinted, murals covering the walls and ceiling of the thick ly carpeted council chamber. The mural dominated by five giant figures on the ceiling represents five aids to international understand ing: strength, justice, peace, law and intelligence. Multi - lingual United Na tions interpreters will simul taneosuly translate the foreign ministers' words into French, English and Russian as the case may be once the meeting begins. To Rob Visitors One thing the Foreign Min isters' conference will do is rob the hundreds of visitors who tour the Palais daily of much that in interesting on their tour. The council chamber and its approaches, if normal pro cedure is followed, will be , barricaded to the public. Meanwhile, the hundreds of newsmen expected in Geneva will be working in a different atmosphere, a frezied one of clacking typewriters and fast communications on the other ' side of this ' mountain-surrounded city. A temporary press' head quarters has been set up - a 10-minute drive from the Palais - in Geneva's Batiment Electoral (Election Building), an undistinguished structure chosen more for its communi cation facilities and prefabri cated office space than its beauty.
