Bedford Trackmen Have Klamath Trip Medford high will be favor ed to win its second dual track victory of the season Friday when It journeys to Klamath Falls. It will be the second tussle this week for the Black Tor nado which dropped a 66V4 to verdict to Grants Pass on Tuesday night. A scan of the records indi cates that top Medford per formances have outshone those by Klamath athletes in most of the events. Big exception is in the hurdles and high jump where Bob Drace is the leading Peli can. He has been clocked in :15.3 in the high sticks and :20.2 in the lows. So far as can be determined his low hurdle time is tops in the dist rict and his high barrier clocking at least knotj with the best. Overlooked His efforts were Inadvert ently overlooked when hurdle times in the GP-Medford meet were termed southern Ore gon bests. Drace has also high jumped six feet, equal ing the top jumps of George Koch and Jerry Shults of Medford. Another top contender for Klamath Falls is Don Story who will challenge Medford's Don Peek and Len Griggs for laurels in the dashes. Story has run a :09.8 century in practice and has been around :10.2 and :10,3 in meets. In the 220 he has been around 23. Jim Parks of KF will bat tie it out with Medford's Ron Reich in the 440-yard run. Ron Olvera of the Pels may press Jonn Harvey and sKip Bennett of Medford in the pole vault and Allen Phillips is a challenger to Koch in the javelin. Heath Important , Grants Pass defeated Kla math 8114 to 40 last Sat urday. The Cavemen, eyeing their Tuesday fray with Med ford, rested their best men in number of events yet man aged eight first places and swept the pole vault, broad jump and shot put. Slight Changes In Plans for National Open New York -TOPD The U. S. Golf association announced today the exact record num ber of golfers who will com pete for the U. S. Open cham pionship this year is 2,402. Th ; association also disclosed slight changes In the' qualify ing plans. The USGA announced that local qualifying tournaments will be. held at 57 sites, rather than 60 as originally planned. Local competitions planned at Honolulu, -Boise and . Albu querque were dropped be- cause of insufficient entries In those areas. Double Qualifying The Open is being played this year for the first time under a "double qualifying" system. A total of 2,333 en trants will compete In the 37 local 36-hole tournaments, all of them to be held on May 18 except for the Chicago com petition which will be held on May 19. From the local tourneys will come 428 qualifiers who will join 49 exempt players for a total field of 477 golf ers in 13 sectional tourna ments, also 36 holes, to be held on June 1. From the section tourneys will come 130 players who join 20 exempt players for a total field of 150 in the 72 hole championship competi tion at the Winged Foot Golf club, Mamaroneck, N. Miler Roger Johnson, half-miler Bruce Hill and hurdler Robert Ham ilton were Medfordites side lined for the earlier meet this week. Hill, at least, is expect ed to make the Klamath jaunt. The trip to Klamath Falls will be the Tornado's last in terscholastic competition be fore the district meet May 16 at Grants Pass. GP Victor In Baseball Over AHS Ashland Grants Pass high forfeited its hold on second place in Southern Oregon con ference baseball standings yesterday by whitewashing Ashland 6 to 0 at Grants Pass in a make-up game. The Cavemen virtually set tled the issue with three runs in the first inning on three hits, two wild pitches, two walks and three errors. Bill Cole hurled two-hit ball for GP, walking one batter, hit ting one and whiffing six. Pete Stemple singled and Jim Doster doubled for the only Ashland safeties. Long blow of the game was a triple by the Cavemen's Gary Huneycutt. Alan McKinnis started on the hill for Ashland and was relieved by Bob Johnson with one out after giving up two hits and two bases on balls. Ky Ebright Has Last Chance at Huskies1 Crew Seattle, Wash. -4DPB- Cali fornia crew coach Ky Ebright who learned about the old shell game as a coxswain for Washington, gets his last chance to "beat the Huskies at their own game here Satur day. Ebright's rowing Bears take on the Husky crews on Lake Washington in a dual regatta, an event that goes back to 1903. Freshman, jun ior varsity and varsity races are scheduled. The frosh row two miles; the others go two and three-quarter miles. Ebright has announced his retirement at the end of the current season and his Bears would like nothing better than to give Ky a victory over Washington as a going away present. Bolton Leads Rifle Shooters Jim Bolton led the rifle shooters in last night's prac tice of Medford Rifle and Pis tol club with 384 in four-posi tion shooting. He was followed by Lew Conger , with 381, Jerrie Heitmaneck 376, Harry Heidenreich 370 and Marvin Nelson 364. . Three newcomers took up rifle shooting, Bill Replogle, Jack Thompson and Iver Iver son. Bill Replogle joined the club and the National Rifle association. Officers announced there wil be an all-members meet ing Friday, May 8, at the new rifle range. Movies will be shown at the conclusion of the meeting. Coffee and cookies will be served by the ladies. Meeting will start at 8 pjn. Butte Falls Wins Over Prospect Butte Falls - Butte Falls high handed champion Pros pect its first loss in Jackson County B league baseball yes terday, nosing out the Cou gars 3 to 2. Jerry Ferguson singled Lar ry Cavin home with the win ning run in the extra eighth inning. Cavin had reached first base on an error and ad vanced on a stolen base and groundout. Butte Falls and Jackson ville now will battle for sec ond place in their game at Jacksonville on Fnaay. Pros pect has first place cinched because Talent forfeited to the Cougars. Cavin scored the other two Butte Falls runs yesterday. In the first inning' it was on his single and stolen base and two Prospect miscues. In the third he tripled and scored on infielder's interference when Prospect was trying to catch him in a rundown. ' The game went into extra innings when Prospect scored in the top of the seventh on three errors and a fielder's op tion. Edwin Ellis, Butte Falls pitcher, struck out seven and walked one in a seven-hitter. Tom Davidson tossed a six hitter for Prospect, walking four and fanning eight. LINESCOBE: . McMurtry To Be Rival Of Slugger Portland Pat McMurtry, handsome heavyweight chal lenger from Tacoma, Wash., will square off against hard pressing and punching Garvin Sawyer of New York in the 10-round bout offered by North-West Sports Promotions at the Civic Auditorium on Tuesday night, May 12. The fight could be a thriller between boxer and slugger. McMurtry is the boxer but is by no means a fancy dan with no punch. In fact, the Tacoma Irishman has dis played punching prowess in winning 30 out of 34 fights since turning pro in 1954. Twenty-three of these victor ies have been by the kayo route. One fight with Bob Al bright ended in a draw. Pat lost a pair of disputed, split decisions to a couple of top notch fighters, Willie Besma noff and Willie Pastrano while on the way up the fis tic ladder. His only knockout defeat was suffered at the hands of big Nino Valdez in Madison Square Garden last Decem ber. The Tacoman frankly ad mits that he forgot to duck when he fought the Cuban and is bent on proving that this loss was a fluke. Pat's style will be good for Garvin Sawyer, who will be ready for some tall slugging himself. The eastern clouter is a hard working heavyweight who will be in top fighting condition. Garvin can punch, takes a good wallop and likes to slug it out. The 24 year old former International Golden Gloves heavyweight champ has been working out with . Veldez and hopes to duplicate Nino's quick knockout feat over Pat. Sawyer is a 190-pounder. He has had an excellent ca reer in professional circles after being one of the best amateur fighters in the coun try. The Goldman protege has chalked up eight knockouts in winning 13 of 19 fights since leaving the amateur ranks in 1955. Tickets have already been placed on sale at the gym. The ball went only about 40 yards and landed in SOC Raiders Mountainers Ashland - Already possess ing their second consecutive Oregon Collegiate conference baseball crown, the Red Raid ers of Southern Oregon col lege travel to LaGrande this Friday and Saturday for a three game set with Eastern Oregon college. - SOC's high flying Red Raiders cinched the crown with three wins over Portland last week end while Eastern Oregon was beaten twice by Oregon College of Education. Coach Ted Schopf's horse hide crew is in possession of an 8-1 record in the OCC while second place EOC has lost five. The remaining fight in the OCC is for the second place sDot. The first two teams in the OCC will meet the top two from the Northwest confer ence in the district NAIA playoff during the latter part of May in Portland. The PCL isn't the old man's league it used to be, but plenty of the old pros are still around. Bud Podbielan, a 35-year-old veteran of eight major league campaigns over a 14 year career, is one oldster of the type who a couple of years ago made the PCL the strong est of the minor leagues. Podbielan's brains have re placed his fastball. He notched his third win of the season Wednesday night by .holding Spokane to five hits as San Diego defeated the Indians, 5 to 3. In 37 innings so far this year, Podbielan has al lowed opposing batters only 20 hits. Best Pitching Other PCL activity last night saw Phoenix get some of its best pitching of the sea son as the Giants split a double-header with Portland, losing the first, 1 to 0, and winning the second, 2 to 1.' Vancouver made it three straight over Salt Lake by a 7 to 1 count and Seattle dropped league leading Sacra mento 2 to 1. San Diego's win moved the second-place Padres to with in two games of the Solons. The Padres scored three runs in the first inning to chase" Indian starter Bob Gialom bardo, and added single runs in the third and fourth in nings. Sacramento Manager Bob Elliott probably wasn't too mad about his team's loss. Jerry Nelson, making his mound debut for the Solons, gave -up only two runs and seven hits while losing. El liott already has eight other pitchers with earned run averages below the 2.79 mark. Went The Distance Seattle hurler Dave Sten house scattered eight hits while going all the way on the mound. The Suds got their first run when Harry Malm berg scored on Elmer Valo's infield single. Malmberg bat ted in the winning counter in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Portland's hurlers kept Phoenix' wrecking crew in line Wednesday night. The Giants have a team batting average , of around .300, but they could score only two runs in 16 innings against the Beavers. Kenny Johnson limited the Giants to four hits as he shut them out in the seven inning opener. The Beavers were also held to four hits by Giant starter Curt Barclay and re liever Julio Navarro. Johnson won his own game with a looping single in the second inning that scored Gil Valen tin, who had doubled. Night's Only Homer Bob Prescott doubled home one run and scored the other as the Giants came back in the second game to chalk up a 2 to 1 decision for Eddie Fisher. Herter planned to outline the results of his talks with other Western foreign minis ters in Paris last week and point out the issues at stake in the Geneva meeting which starts Monday.
