ff Just Another Day In The Life of a Fox-Squirrel The fox-squirrel had barely made it. The hawk had swoop ed out of the, morning sky, its cruel talons ripped a tuft of hair from his brushy, tail. Had he not leaped when he did the hawk's talons would have been buried in his quivering back. i By late afternoon he had al most forgotten his harrowing experience. Sleepy now, he crouched on a high branch surveying the wood - lot. He cocked his head and listened as a couple of blue jays set up a clatter at the far edge of the woods. The jays usually scold ed when an intruder entered the forest. Flattening himself on the branch he surveyed the nearby scene. Suddenly, over in the direction of the jays a red squirrel began to scold. Danger in Woodlot The fox -squirrel was alert now. It gave Prime Minister Ja waharlal Nehru of India a dressing down for his state ments on Tibet. It proclaimed total Commu nist authority over the Hima layan kingdom ruled for cen turies by a Dalai Lama. It warned that "no inter ference by a foreign country or by the United States under whatever pretext or in what ever form will be tolerated." 'Rebellion' Noted The Peoples Daily said "armed rebellion" occurred in the Tibetan-inhabited areas of Szechwan, Kansu and Tsing- hai provinces and said these ' 'rebellions were "directed and instigated precisely by the re actionaries in Tibet. These three provinces cover " nearly one-third of the entire area of the mainland. To gether with vast Sinkiang, the sparsely populated western most region of China where other anti-Communist flare ups have been reported, they make up half of China's area. The crash of the gun arH the fly ing bark of the tree limb, right under the fox-squirrel, hap p e n e d simultaneously. He leaped to the nearest branch, scampered along it, leaped to a nearby tree, dashed head long from limb to limb. He was slightly stunned, his feet tingled with a strange tickling sensation. The gun did not sound again. Now just one thought possessed him, to get back home; to hide himself in his leaf-lined nest high up in the great elm tree. By the time the big fox squirrel arrived at the huge den -tree the shadows were black on the forest floor. Heavy clouds had rolled up in the sky. Night and darkness would come early to the for est. Heartbeat returned now almost to normal and the squirrel crawled into his leaf lined nest in the high crotch of the den-tree. Curling his bushy tail about himself, he slept. Over the forest the black storm clouds piled higher. Streaks of lightning zig-zag-ged across the sky. Almost hurriedly the storm assembled its armament for the bom bardment that was to come. The forest and the creatures within it waited. Sometime during the night, at the height of the storm, a lightning bolt struck the big elm tree, spiraled around the trunk, ripping a deep furrow from crown to ground level. To the squirrel in the den it sounded like the end of the world. He was thrown out and away from the shattered trunk. Feeling himself falling in the darkness the fox-squirrel spread his legs. His claws caught a tree limb; he gripped it. Paralyzed with fright, wet with' the slashing rain, home less, he waited for the last lightning flash and tomor row's warming sun. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate. 1959) Agness Residents Seek Electricity Agness-Illahe The' 200 or so residents of Agness and II lahe are working to get elec tricity 'brought into the re sort area. Residents have been asked to sign pledge cards for $2,500 worth of electricity per month. If enough unbinding cards are signed, residents would be asked to sign bind ing agreements to provide a certain amount of power for a five-year period. Bruce Shavere, manager of the Coos and Curry Electric Co-op, said the co-op would provide power if enough resi dents expressed' an interest and were willing to guarantee to purchase a certain amount each month. Because of anticipated growth, the guarantee would be for five years only. After that time, population would have increased enough to as sure the co-op enough revenue from what electric power is used. - - Insurance! Mississippi Negro Executed By Two Gunshots Poplarville, Miss. - (UPD - A young Negro rape suspect kid napped from his unguarded jail cell was "executed" by two gunshots, a coroner's jury ruled Tuesday. The Negro, Mack Charles Parker 23, was abducted from the Pearl River county court house jail a week ago ' last Saturday. His body was found floating in the Pearl river 20 miles west of here Monday morning. During the inquest, the 40 man FBI investigation team and Mississippi state highway patrolmen intensified their hunt for the lynch mob that seized Parker. Beaten in Cell He was beaten in his cell before nine "or 10 hooded and gloved white men carried him feet first down three flights of stairs to a waiting car. Four workmen were hos pitalized last week after de veloping shortnes of breath 'while using acetylene torches on casings here. All are now recovered. ..The Health Board and the State Department of Geology arid Mineral Industry said the casings were made of cad mium which can produce the dangerous fumes when burn ed. Lonergan of Portland is back on the bench. : He suffered a dislocated hip Feb. 22 in an automobile -accident near the Oregon coast. The judge spent more than six weeks in bed recovering from the injury.
