Iiir Help For Families in Distress In my early years, when I used to make calls and go into homes particularly of the poor I was I I often impress- ftj0 I fd with a feel- l n g oi nope- Jwas faced with a pover ty - stricken, run - down home in a small dirty Dr. Alvare house in a slum neighborhood - a house presided over by a husband who did not make enough money to support and feed a number of children. Perhaps another child was on its way and the mother was worn out and hopeless and apathetic. Perhaps she had never had any training in home-making to begin with; the children were perhaps out-of-hand, and too much for her; and the un happy husband, when he came home at night - tired out from his day's labor - either didn't know how to help his wife, or didn't care to try. ' Perhaps when the wife got so tired and weak that she felt she never could get out of bed again, the husband asked me to see her. Then I felt ab solutely helpless because, ob vidusly, nothing that I could give Wer out of a bottle would cure the awful situation of the home. Even the giving of a lot of money to such people would not have done enough. Some good, wise woman would have had to go in and teach that wife how to be a better housekeeper. Someone would have- had to arrange matters so that, for a while, she could get a rest, and some sleep. Perhaps she needed to spend three weeks in bed. Someone would have to take care of the children for a while. Court Records DISTRICT COURT Richard T. Costelo, overload, $201. Francis G. Hawkins, overload, S117. Stanley W. Mayo Cllnte Now, I read in an article by Margaret Hickey, that in England something is being done to help such families, and to give the mother a chance to gain back her health, her courage and her self-respect. When this is done, often it keeps the husband from deserting his wife and children and home. Then the children will have a better chance to grow up into goqd citizens. Margaret Hickey tells also of the splendid work that is being done in Chicago by the Cook County Department of Welfare. This Department has a number of fine and able women who, for a while, will go each day into the home of some poverty-stricken family in which the mother is at the end of her rope. First, the woman may- find the family a better and clean er apartment; she may help to get a little furniture that is much needed; she will help the mother to handle her situa tion much better, and s,he will show her how to bring up her children more sensibly. I think it should be obvious that this Jsort of help is greatly needed in all big cities. With out such social work, I don't know what can be done for many families. The doctor alone cannot work the mir acle. Thank God that in many of our cities fine women are helping. -Hal I see patients who are full of hate for many" of their fellow-men. Often they are elderly men who are bitter against someone who got the promotion they wanted, or the vice-presidency they wanted, or against someone who they say took advantage of them in a deal, or someone with whom they once had bitter words, or perhaps they are sore at a par ent, a- brother, a sister, or a former husband or wife. It is particularly sad when an elderly person has come to hate a son, a daughter, a son-in-law or a daughter-in-law. Lost Ability To Sleep I always tell such people, when they come to the office complaining of ill health, that I doubt if they can get better so long as they go on hating so violently. Hate poisons people. I remember a man who got to hating his own daughter with a "bitter hate because she had sued him for an accounting of her mother's estate. Oh, how he hated her! Immediately, he began to lose weight; his breath became horribly foul; he lost his ap petite; he lost, his ability to sleep; pretty soon his heart began to fail so badly that his legs -swelled, and he had to sleep sitting up in a chair. I kept telling him that if he wanted to get well he would have to forgive his daughter, but this he refused to do -and so he died. He died of hate. I thought of this man when, today, I read Schiller's statement that, "Hate is a pro longed form of suicide." I am uncomfortable when I am around someone who has no good word to say about any one; he mpst be an unpleasant and unhappy and somewhat sick person inside.'
