C. Peterson, 1440 Whitman ave., Medford, has accepted a research teaching fellowship at Columbia uni versity, according to reports from Oregon State college in Corvallis, from which he was graduated last year. The fellowship offer re sulted from Peterson's suc cessful research in the field of heat transfer. His work has been classified a s a "breakthrough in the field of heat transfer which will make possible smaller nuclear re actors." ,At Columbia, he will teach classes and construct a nu clear reactor while working on his master's degree. He plans to work toward a doc torate later.- He majored in chemical engineering at Or egon State. 66 German Measles Cases Reported Sixty-six cases of German measles were reported in Jackson county last week, ac cording to Dr. A. Erin Mer kel, public health physician. Forty-eight cases were report ed in Medford, 8 in Phoenix, 6 in Central Point and 4 in Ashland. Other cases of communic able diseases were pneumon ia, 4 in Ashland, 2 in Med ford and Camp White and 1 in Butte Falls; amoebic dysen tery. Phoenix 1; measles, Medford 12, Ashland ' 7, and Trail ! 1; and chicken pox, Medford 11, Applegate 4, and Ashland 1. Tel. SP 2-2111 SP Switching in Grants Pass Moves Grants Pass - Southern Pa cific railroad late last week shifted most of its switching operations out of the down town Grants Pass business area. G. M. Joyce, Medford, train master in charge of SP oper ations in 'southern Oregon, and J. M. Wilson, Glendale, roadmaster in charge of con struction and relocation, made the announcement. The move' to switching out side the downtown area was made , before . SP had com pleted construction of its new switching yards east of Grants Pass. They said the second new yard track, with a capac ity of 65 freight cars, would be placed in service, bringing new yard capacity up to 125 cars. When the third yard track is completed, the total will be about 185 cars, they added. ' The ' changeover - involves all switching operations form erly handled in the down town yards, Joyce said. The company will continue to weigh cars at the present scales downtown because new scales are not yet completed. The three new switching tracks will extendfrom just east of Mill st. for about three fourth of a mile to a point a short distance west of the Ament Dam rd. crossing the main line. The meeting was adjourned and refresh ments served. Linda Pittock, Reporter Applegate Culinary Cuties The Applegate Culinary Cuties 4-H club met at the home of their leader, Mrs. Eugene Krouse recently. Three demonstrations were given. Kristy Jones gave a demon stration on making brownies. Judy Drake demonstrated lemonade making, and Ardi enne Brian demonstrated orange floats. All members but two were pres ent. Marilyn and Christine Streeter, who are visiting at the Edge home, were visitors. Roll call was answered by reading letters received in an swer to one written by each club member of another club requesting information as to the selection of their club name. Some interesting, as well as educational letters were read. ... Joyce Moore, acting as mother,, Arlene Moore, as lit tle sister, Dianne Wheeler as big sister and her friend, Ja linda Arthur, gave a good demonstration on keeping your room clean and orderly. It was given in the form of a play. Finals plans were made for the model meeting and pro gram our club is putting on the Lake Creek Grange May 8. We have two new members in our club, the Nelm sisters from Butte Falls highway. Registrations Open For Swim Classes Registrations are now be ing accepted at the Medford Young Men's Christian asso ciation for swiming lessons for persons 6 years old and older, Robert L. Jones, gener al secretary, has announced. Jones pointed out that learn ing to swim well is one of the most important water safety rules. He reviewed wa ter safety rules in view of the coming swimming season in the area's streams and lakes. In addition to learning to swim well, he said, a life guard should always be pres ent, and warning signs should be obeyed. Among other water safety rules are the dangers of swimming in seaweed, over exertion, knowing the current of a stream and the water's depth. Keeping calm during an emergency is the best policy, Jones said, and all swimmers should know how to revive a person through artificial respiration. Jones noted that last year, 478,327 persons were taught to swim in YMCA pools throughout the country.
