Mrs. K.M. Nora is rude to my friend. Nora M. - Why should I have to put up with him? : Mrs. K.M. I am a widow' in my 50s living with my youngest daughter, a girl in her'mid-20s. - About a year ago I met a man who is interested in mar rying me. I don't feel that I want to marry him. He does n't have the appearance and manner I like in a man and he has many personal habits that annoy me. But Jim , is pleasant,, good company and very considerate of me. He is also very thoughtful of my daughter. Here is the problem. My daughter, Nora, is rude to Jim and. resents his presence in our home. She tries to run out or lock herself in her room when" he conies. I want her to stay around " because this will prevent his getting any wrong ideas. She would be . sitting in the living room watching TV anyway. ..',' Nora M. 1 certainly do resent Jim. Who. wouldn't?" He makes himself rightat home in our place with no consid eration for us. He'll take off his j acket and loosen his tie just as though he has already moved in. Of course he al ways says "May I?" first,; but he doesn't even see my nasty look when I say, "Make your self perfectly at home." . It certainly makes me sick to have him hanging around. I don't give a darn if Mom goes out -with him. It's her business if she wants. to date characters like that, but why should I have to put up with him? . What annoys me most about Jim is what my mother calls his "thoughtfulness" of me. He brings me little gifts for special occasions. It's as though he is trying to buy my good" will or something. The Council: Mrs, K.M. is making an unfair demand on her daughter and Nora is tak ing it out on Jim in a cruel and unfair way. Mrs. K. M. is, in effect, ask ing Nora to act as chaperone and we certainly don't blame the girl for resenting this. A woman in her 50s should be able to act as her own chap erone. If she feels unable to cope with Jim's advances she ought to get rid of him or see him only for outside dates. It is possible that Mrs. K.M. wants' Nora around more as a restraining influence on her self than for Jim and the girl senses this. It is probably dis turbing to her to think of her Lmother as a person not com pletely in control of herself. At the same time it makes Nora '.-iel "in the way" as chapercnes always are. They are there to prevent an in cident that is desired by their charges. Nor do we blame Nora for objecting to having a man who doesn't really belong make himself at home in her living room. But her sarcasm is ineffective as well as nasty. It would be so much better if she would courteously come out with the truth and say, "I'd prefer that you wouldn't" when he asks if h.e msy remove his jacket - It seems to us that both Nora and Jim are getting a rough deal here because of Mrs. K.M.'s lack of honesty. Apparently she is attracted to this man . and finds that he offers certain conveniences. She encourages him to ex pect more from her than she is willing to give. If she is not interested in marrying him but only in keeping his friend ship, she should let him know. However, we suspect that he is a diamond in the rough, and could get over some of his boorish ways if he were SHEET PLASTIC In 12-16-20 FOOT WIDTHS Light and Heavy Weights Gives Complete Weather Protection 1000 of Other Uses DUNHAM'S Open Evenings Till 8 .
