Vacation Pay
Measure Beaten
Salem OJPD The Senate
Wednesdy defeated a meas
ure which would have pro
vided lor payment for unused
vacation time for a group of
former state officials.
However, Sen, Alice Cor
bett (D-Portland), said she
possibly would ask for recon
sideration of the vote today.
The bill called for distribu
tion of $10,640 in accumulated !
vacation pay xo n lurmei
state officials who were mem
bers of the administrations of
ex-Govs. Robert Holmes and
Elmo Smith.
Sen. Ben Musa (D-The
Dalles), led the opposition,
saying that these men, when
they accepted political jobs,
knew what they were con
fronted with. He added if they
did not take their vacations
when due they should lose
them just as they would in
federal service.
Sen. Ward Cook (D-Port-land),
said if members of the
Senate wanted these officials
to let state business go hang
and eo on vacations they
have earned they should vote
against the biU. "They have
earned these vacations and
did not take them because
they were dedicated to the
duties assigned them," he
said.
Grange News...
Enterprise Grange
The Enterprise Grange met
recently with Robert King;
master, residing. Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Moore have com
pleted obligations for the
third and fourth degrees.
The Home Economics chair
man. Gladys Boulter, report
ed eight members. They meet
the first Wednesday of each
month at the home of differ
ent members. The next meet
ing will be at the home of
Mrs. Dick Olympius, May 5.
Activities of the club have
included a clean-up day at
the Grange hall, and a break
fast for the public.
New events will include a
tea for teachers of Evans Val
ley school at the Grange hall
Sunday, May 2, from 2 to 4
p.m. A shortv program has
been planned.
- The dairy chairman report
ed that the price of beef stock
was up so the price on cull
dairy cows had gotten a little
boost.
- Fire insurance agent, Ches
ter Jensen, reported a raise
in the fire insurance rates,
although there had been -no
change in auto insurance
rates. He reported that new
car insurance policies were
now required to carry an "un
insured insurance" clause that
would protect the policy hold
er if he should have an acci
dent with an uninsured car.
The Grange improvement
program has been making a
' gradual progress. The Boy
Scouts have helped by rak
ing and. cleaning the yard
and burning the debris.
Members of the Grange
have completed some of the
jobs outlined. Bob Sloman has
completed work on the sew
age system to meet the re
quirements for the drainage
disposal from the kitchen. Al
Boulter has completed the
serving table and if" is now
installed in the dining room
and in use. Joe Wilson has
donated enough lumber for
the building of new steps for
the Grange hall. King will do
the carpenter work.
Art Moorman and Chester
Jensen have donated galvan
ized pipe to erect standards
for the net and back stop on
the tennis court under con
struction as the Grange's ma
jor community project.
The Grange voted to pur
chase the net and the wire
for the back stops. The court,
although it is built on school
property, primarily for the
use of the school children
will be open for; the use of
the community.
Plans were made for
meeting on the court next
Sunday to put on the final
touches, which include pour
ing cement and setting the
standards and pouring tar to
fill the expansion gaps and
final surfacing. Dedication
ceremonies will take place at
.the annual picnic held at the
close of the school year.
Many members have re
turned to the community aft
er time away for illness or
vacation. Mr. Orvis has re
turned from a trip to visit
his daughter in Hawaii. Mr
and Mrs. George Barry have
returned from a winter vaca
tion. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis
Northrup have returned from
California.
Mrs. Esther Sund is in San
Francisco under treatment for
injuries received in an auto
accident some months ago.
