10 MAIL TRIBUNE. Medford, Or. l Thunday, April 30, 1959 Store Wide Values Specially Selected to Save You Money I f Family Council rsssssssn Mm. L.D. - Jenny'i in love with a divorced man. Jennifer D. - He'i a good, solid man. " Mrs. L.D. - My husband and I are terribly upset about our daughter, Jennifer, who is 17 and in love with a di vorced man of 30. Jenny has worked for this man as a part-time typist for ihf nast vear. She has talked Mr. T., breathed Mr. T., lived Mr. T. nearly every waking moment. When she is finished talking to us about him, she calls up her girl friends and starts on them. Well, we thought it was just silly and laughable-until Mr. T. started responding, tie has gotten into the habit of taking her out to coffee after work, walking her home and kissing her on the forehead at the door. 1 My husband says that if Jenny doesn t quit that job right away he, personally, is going to have dealings with Mr. T. ' Jennifer D. - My parenti are absolutely the limit! You'd think I'd done some thing awful. I've done noth ing. I've sworn that if my father goes to talk to him I'm just going to run away from home. I can do it too - and they know it. I have savings and I'm an expert typist. One of my friends told me her parents would be glad if she went out with a good, solid man like Mr. T. The kids she goes out with and the ones I have dated are just awful! Besides, we'll be ready for marriage in another year or. two and these kid have at least ten years to go. As for Mr. T. having been divorced, it's just a laugh to hear my parents talk on that subject! My father was di vorced himself, yet he threat ens something drastic if I bring Mr. T. into the house. The Council: No, Mr. L.D.! Don't shut the door in Mr. T.'s face and don't go doing any thing "drastic" and don't try to force Jenny to quit her job. It isn't the right way at all. Instead, the L.D.'s should invite Mr. T. in and offer him a cup of coffee and get him to talk. When a 17-year-old girl is -in love and seems to be get ting some manner of response from a man, it is important for the parents to know as much as possible about him. So far, all the L.D.'s know about him is that he has been divorced. And how many chil dren must he support? And what more about his past? The answers to these ques tions can't be obtained by a direct or hostile .approach. The L.D.'s owe it to their daughter to treat her acquaintances ' with courtesy and real interest. It is quite possible that they will find that they like Mr. T. - or that Jenny will cool off a bit when she sees him in an or dinary home setting. From the surface evidence it would seem that this man is rather immature and that he is so flattered by Jenny's breathless adoration that he can't resist making the most of it. When confronted with older people - especially a pair of interested parents - he may lose a lot of the authority of manner that at tracts Jenny. When parental eyes give a man a serious going-over, the man is likely to disappear if he is. not serious. If he is, the L.D.s better get acquainted. (Copyright 1959. General Features Corp.)
