Truman To Lecture At New York - (LTD - Former Presiden Harry S. Truman, who has "no degrees except those I didn't earn," begins a three-day series of lectures to collge students today on a subject he knows better than most professors - the U.S. government. Truman promised he'd talk plain language, as usual, to Columbia University students. Connell of England, reported 42 cases of psychosis or mental aberra tion, due to the taking of amphetamine. Eight of the patients be came derang ed after tak ing just one dose. In some ei tient became Alvarea OU UCb 111(711- tally that he had to be hos pitalized. Occasionally, when the patient didn't tell his doc tor about the drug being tak en, the doctor thought he was dealing with schizophrenia. In some of the cases the drug had been given in order to cut down on appetite, and keep the patient from getting fat. Some of the patients had become addicted to this drug and were taking enormous amounts of it. What this means is that sensible people will not run up the dose, and they will quit the drug if they begin to feel queer. Help for the Deaf 4 CLUB -mi NEWS Dairy Club The Eagle Point Dairy club met Wednesday at the Carrol home from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 22. We met to elect new officers for our club. In the morning we sewed, then after lunch we had our business meeting. Bonnie Goering accompanied us with music and Joyce Moore led us in singing. Under new business it was decided that we have more work days in between our meetings. After our meetings we sewed until 3:30 p.m. April 18 we had a work day from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Janet Burk, Reporter. Bids Rejected Here For Office Building All bids received Friday for construction of the Lumber men's Realty company, West Main st. and Lincoln ave. were rejected shortly after they were opened in the of fice of Pobert J. Keeney, arch itect for the building, it was reported. The project will be modi fied and reoffered for bids, the architect indicated. The bids received included $92,656 by Don L. Jacobs; $93,751 by Rogue Valley Con struction company; $96,408 by R. I. Batzer and $139,300 by Bessonette Construction com pany. The proposed building would house the offices of the Devee Lumber Sales, Inc., and those of Forestglen - Lumber company, both of which are currently in the U. S. National Bank building. Mayo Cllaie In a recent article, Dr. E. H. Campbell of Chicago, re ported the results of 250 op erations for loosening up the stapes or little bone that fits into the window between the middle ear and the inner ear. The sound that comes through the air has to get into the inner ear if it is to be heard. In many cases it can't get through because the tiny bone that fits into the window has become somewhat stuck. What the doctor does is to loosen it up. In Dr. Campbell's series of cases, seven got back practically normal hearing. In 48 per cent, the hearing was decidedly improved, and hence, in over half of the cases the patient was better for the operation. In six per cent of the cases the patients got only moderate improve ment, and in 8.4 per cent they got worse. The "fenestration" operation was performed on 43 of the 112 patients who had not obtained good results from mobilization of the stapes. In this operation, a new little window is made between the middle and the inner ear. Nearly 80 per cent of these operations were successful, and 5 per cent were partially successful.
