Malheur Blocks Welfare Budget

county court and budget board
flatly turned down the coun
ty welfare commission's pro
posed budget of nearly S70,
000 Friday and said there is
"so much trouble in Salem
about the state welfare that
the Malheur budget board
wants to bring the matter to
a head."
In the unusual move, the
court and budget board at the
same time said that in lieu
of the county welfare budget,
the $70,000 would be allocat
ed to a fund "such as the dis
trict attorney may direct."
The court-board statement
said their complaint was "not
directed against the local ad
ministration but against the
general concept of welfare
right."

LINES AND SHADOWS - Timbers and
their supports cast myraid shadows on the
bottom of one of Medford's reservoirs atop
Capital Hill. The timbers provide a frame
for a metal roof to be installed later this
spring. Another, adjacent reservoir is also

Students Qualify As Candidates
Eugene-Two Medford men
now attending the University
of Oregon have qualified as
candidates for positions in the
Associated Students of the
University of Oregon student
senate. They are Frank Al
bert, a candidate for senator-at-large,
and Michael Stearns,
a candidate for off-campus
single students representative.
Boi Albert and Stearns
received a sufficient number
of votes in the all-campus
primary election to have their
names placed on the general
election ballot.
Albert,1 a freshman major
in liberal arts, is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Albert,

currently serving as president
of the freshman class. Stearns,
a freshman in journalism, is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy
