Virgil Akins, to night in his first title defense. On Jordan's side were youth, confidence and an im pressive record. He won the crown from Akins Dec. 6 and since then knocked out one other foe to run his winning streak to . 11 fights. He has been beaten only once in his last 18 matches. Akins, seven years older than Jordan at 31, has stum bled to defeat by Del Flana gan and trailed Charlie Tomb stone Smith for nine rounds before he rallied for a knock out win in his other bouts since he won the title a year ago. Despite the disparity in their recent records, a crowd of upwards of 7,000 was ex pected to pay between $50,000 and $55,000 to watch them go the championship distance of 15 rounds, or less should either battler manage to put in a knockout punch. Play-offs are set for next Thursday. Roosevelt and Jefferson knotted at the top of the Na tional league and Wilson, Oak Grove and Lincoln tied in the American loop. A No. 1 play off spot will go to Roosevelt because it beat Jeff in the regular season. Richard Newland pitched a no-hitter for Wilson in one of four games yesterday. Wilson beat Lincoln 2 to 1. Other results were Oak Grove 18 to 2 over West Side, Jefferson 8 to 0 over Hoover and Jackson over Washington 5 to 4. The Wilson-Lincoln brush went eight innings in stead of the scheduled five and Jackson - needed six to beat Washington. Gravel Bill Passes House ' House Bill 472 pertaining to regulation of removal of sand or gravel from streams was among legislation to pass the Oregon House of Repre sentatives yesterday. The bill was introduced at the request of the Oregon division of the Izaak Walton league as a measure to protect fish life. OPENING .-DAY- Saturday till 9 pm Sunday 6 am - 2 pm the championship over Vince Martinez last June, triumph ed in just such fashion, stun ning his foe with an over hand right, the first punch of the fight, and then flooring him nine times en' route to a technical knockout win. Akins has knocked out 30 opponents in winning 49 fights, but he has lost 19 bouts and has been knocked out twice. Red Raider Trackmen Tussle OTI Ashland Southern Oregon college will seek its third vic tory of the season when it tangles with Oregon Tech in a track meet Saturday after noon in Klamath Falls. The Owls are defending Oregon Collegiate conference champions and appear to have a power packed squad again this year. Raider thinclads have won two dual meets and were third last week in a triangular. Clarence and Stuart Baker will lead the Raiders with both Ashland brothers run ning in the relay, Clarence in the 100 and 220-yard dashes, and Stu in the 220, the 440 with Chuck Swingle, and the broad jump with Gofdon Clay ton. Returning to action will be Eldon Francis in the javelin, he continually set marks of over 190 feet last year. The ex-Medford athlete has been travelling with the baseball squad. Another Baseballer Clayton is also an entrant in the javelin and the 100 and 220 with Jim Dietz, another baseballer. Jack Johnson leads the dis tance men in the 880 and the mile runs where he has been tops for the Raiders this year. Norm Pawlowski will team with Johnson in. the mile and run the two-mile besides. Al Born and Byron Kile are entrants in the high jump and Born will also be running the high sticks. Sid Smith will go in the low hurdles and possibly Scott Peterson. Pedroy Colley is the big per former in the discus and shot for the Raiders. He has rack ed up more points than any other participant on the SOC cinder team. Stan Gribble will team with Colley in both events if his injured heel is okeh. Larry Derry and Jack Ko pacz are entries in the pole vault, Duane Daley in the dis tances and Bill Mularky in the high hurdles. Noble Adamack will be the third entry in the discus to round out the Raider squad. The following week the Raiders will play host to the Humboldt State squad, in a weekend that will provide a good variety of sports on the SOC campus. The Giants were idle Thurs day. Cub manager Bob Schef fing is expected to counter with Darius Dave Hillman, who owns a 1-1 record. Antonelli has racked up three straight victories in get ting off to his best start in 10 seasons in the big show. He hurled a five hitter while breezing to a 7-1 triumph against the Cubs earlier in the season. On theirs road trip, the Giants are . scheduled to meet Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee in addition to the Cubs. Manager Bill Rigney has said he will platoon right handed hitting Felipe Alou, currently rapping the ball at a .390 clip with southpaw swinging Willie Kirkland in right field during the trip. If a challenger defeats his opponent, his posi tion is moved up to 4he spot of the man he beat and the loser is dropped to the former position of the man who downed him. The club has invited young players to turnout Sunday afternoons for periods of play and instruction. If sufficient interest is shown, a junior ladder tourney will be set up. St. Louis -(DPD The Los An geles Dodgers launch the first game in their long road trip tonight when they go against the eighth -place St. Louis Cardinals in Busch Stadium. The Dodgers in second place and crowding the Na tional league leader, the Mil waukee Braves, named south paw Johnny Podres (1-1X to take the mound against the Cards' Larry Jackson (0-2). -Tonight's tilt will be one of 17 road games which will take the Californians into every National league city ex cept Chicago. The Dodgers have won six of their last eight games - in cluding two out of three games with the San Francisco Giants - and have a record so far of 7-4. At the close of their first home stand in 1958 they were in sixth place, so things are considerably bright er, this- year. , Shot Put Duel Slated Pomona, Calif. - (UPD - A shot put duel betwen Dallas Long and Bill Nieder in which both men have their sights set on Parry O'Brien's world record of 63 feet, 2 inches overshadows all other events tonight in the first annual Mt. San Antonio relays. Long, 18-year-o 1 d 250 pound freshman from the Uni versity of Southern Califor nia, has an unofficial mark of 64 feet 2 inches, while Nieder, former Kansas star now in the army, boasts a top heave of 63 feet, 8Vi inches. Each man thinks he has a chance tonight to approach 65 feet once only a mirage as far as the greatest men in the event were concerned. O'Brien, the first to pass the once magic 60-foot mark, won't compete in his specialty, although he's entered in the discus Saturday afternoon when the second half of the 56-event program is sched uled. The field for the invita tional two-mile race includes Gordon Pirie of England, world record holder at 3,000 meters, Jerome Walters of the Los Angeles Striders, and Bill Dellinger, formerly of Oregon and now the U.S. Air Force. Talk on Alaska Again Tonight Talks by Herb Kenaga, Alaska traveler and photogra pher, are scheduled this eve ning and Saturday at Girls Community club. The program will start at 8 p.m. on each occasion anrl slides of Alaska will be shown. The three-night series began Thursday and is spon sored by Jackson County chapter of the Izaak Walton league. Shoemaker was impressed by the English-born colt's courage as he turned back a determined drive by Clai borne Farm's Dunce in the stretch to winthe $25,000 added Derby prep by little more than a head. "The horse ran a game race When that other horse came to him, he went on," Shoe maker said, but quickly add' ed, "I still have not decided on the Derby. I'll make up my mind Saturday." , "The Shoe" referred to his engagement to ride Brook meade Stable's Sword Dancer in the seven-furlong Stepping Stone Purse at Churchill Downs Saturday, a race which will attract several Derby contenders, including Calu met Farm's On-And-On and probably the C. V. Whitney filly, Silver Spoon. Sword Dancer will have to perform brilliantly Saturday to gain Shoemaker's saddle service for the Derby, for Tomy Lee showed a world of class in winning the mile-and- an-eighth Blue Grass. Patterson Guaranteed Indianapolis, Ind. - (DPD - Champion Floyd Patterson to day was guaranteed a return match with Brian London on the 100 to one chance that the British puncher wins their May 1 bout for the heavy weight title. The clause was contained in the contract that both fighters signed Thursday. Patterson signed for a guar antee of $75,000 or 60 per cent of the gate, whichever is greater, plus all other income after London's share of $60,' 000 has been deducted. Patterson, who is scheduled to defend his crown against Ingemar Johansson on June 25, is expected to reap an other $200,000 from tele vision rights from the bout at Indianapolis Coliseum. Promoter Bill Rosensohn said that a London victory would force a postponement of the champion's clash with Johansson in New York be cause London mustsagain face Patterson within 90 days. The contract called for a TV blackout of a 75-mile radius, D'Amato said it was up to London to decide what size gloves would be worn. 2 Bat Turns, 2 Round Trips Philadelphia - (DPD - Who's this guy Babe Ruth? Ecuadoran Gains Upset Cleveland, Ohio -(UPD- Vet eran Pancho Segura of Los Angeles rocketed back into the profesional tennis picture today following his stunning upset victory over Mai Ander son of Australia. The 37-year-old native of Ecuador needed only 30 min utes to bury Anderson, 6-0 and 6-3, in the opening round of the world pro tennis cham pionships here Thursday. The spindly - legged South American, bounced off Jack Cramer's cross-country tour to make room for Anderson and fellow Aussie Ashley Cooper, reeled off nine straight games. He rolled through the first set untouch ed and held a 3-0 lead in the second before Anderson ral lied. The victory enable Segura to move into the tournament semi-finals tomorrow night against the winner of a quarter-final match tonight be tween second - seeded Lew Hoad of Australia and Bobby Riggs of New York. Top-seeded Pancho Gon zales and Cooper, idle Thurs day night, open their title bids tonight. 890,500 Ducks, Geese Gunned By Oregonians Portland - Oregon water fowl gunners numbering more than 67,900 reported in with a total take of more than 890, 500 ducks and geese during the 1958 season. Final compu tations by the game commis sion show this to be a 2.2 per cent increase above the kill of the previous season when more than 871,500 ducks and geese were taken by 67,600 hunters. The total number of ducks taken was 823,822, a consider able increase over the 789, 942 reported taken during 1957. The goose kill was down with 66,757 reported taken in 1958 compared to 81,591 taken the previous year. Statistics show that approx imately 25 per cent of all hunting license holders hunt ed waterfowl last year. These hunters spent on the average of six days in the field. Promotions in CAP Squadron Listed Promotions in the Civil Air Patrol, Medford composite squadron, have been an nounced. Don Silver and Dorothy Freeman were promoted to airman second class; Jeanette Vermeulen was promoted to staff sergeant; and Don Hun terman was promoted to mas ter sergeant. The promotions were an nounced at a meeting of the squadron last week by Senior Chief Warrent Officer Rich ard Chapman. Second Lt. Viva A. Mac Manama arid Staff Sergeant Clarence Pugh attended the Oregon Wing Cadet confer ence in Portland last week. Magnificent Mike, the ex- Duke university football play er, went into the second round of the $46,000 Tournament of Champions golf classic today holding a two-stroke lead over the star-packed field-despite the fact he was completely overlooked in the pre-tourna-ment wagering. Souchak cracked out a fine six-under-par 66 Thursday - one stroke off the course record - to take a two-point lead over his 25 competitors on the long and tough Desert Inn Country Club course. Lcngshots in Front Mike was listed at 20-1 odds in the pre-tournament betting, and he sold in the $380,000 Calcutta Pool on Wednesday night for a cheap, for this gambling town price of $14, 500. That compared with $26, 000 paid for Gene Littler and $25,500 for Art Wall, who had trouble with par all day Thurs day. Souchak, one of the biggest hitters in golf, had seven birdies and a single bogey for nines of 34-32. The fight originally was scheduled for next Monday. Promoters said it was chang ed because of the nationally televised bout next Wednes day between Phil Moyer and Yama Bahama.
