Bus Schedules io Follow Area Time San Francisco - Spring schedule changes in areas served by Greyhound Lines' western division will become effective Sunday, April 26, when Daylight Saving Time is established in a number of Western states, the company announced today. All new and regular oper ating schedules will conform to Daylight Saving Time in areas observing the change, Where the change to Daylight Saving Time does not take effect, Greyhound schedules will operate on Standard Time. She said that every so often, and especially after reading my book, "Danger Signals whicn tells people which symptoms should be worried about'and which they can fgnore, she goes to the skin man, and he angers her by "shushing" her when she asks questions. Actually, each year I go to a good dermatologist to ask about a few warts on my Skin. The doctor looks at them with a hand microscope, and then, after applying a local anes thetic, he burns off (either with a red-hot wire or hot sparks) one or two of them, and leaves the others alone Why does he leave some alone? Because he knows they are not the type that are can cerous or are likely to turn into cancer. He has long Latin or Greek names for the dif ferent types. Strangely, the biggest and the most awful looking ones are the ones he does not worry about! If he were in doubt, he would snip off a little piece cf a wart or an ulcer, and examine it un der a microscope. I guess the only thing many patients can do with a very taciturn doctor is to accept him as he is, and not to try to get him to talk. Just trust him to do the right thing for you. Sometimes a doctor who seems to be a terrible grouch is trying to keep people from finding out what a "softie" he is inside. I have known sev eral doctors who used to curse like pirates to cover up their natural shyness, when their patients saw through this bluff, they loved them all the more! Staghorn Kidney Stones .. Some people want to know what to do about a staghorn kidney stone. By this the doc tor means that the patient has a great big kidney stone which fills the so-called pelvis of the kidney. To a . slight extent, it looks like a stag horn, with prongs. Expert kid ney specialist friends of mine tell me that they generally leave these things alone. Why? Because they find no function left in the affected kidney and they know that if they take the stone out, no func tion will come back to the kidney. Hence, unless the man has some pain or some infection, there is nothing that he can gain from having the stone and the kidney remov ed. Usually, in these cases, the patient remains uneasy about the situation; he wants something done; and so soon er or later someones removes his kidney. Often a person writes me tc say, "I am terribly upset because one surgeon wants to remove the kidney stone, an other wants to remove the stone and the kidney, and two surgeons tell me to leave it alone. Who am I to trust?"! As I say to such questions, my impression would always be to trust the man who has such good sense and knowledge and such honesty that he in sists on talking himself out of an operation that could bring him in a large fee. I always remove my hat with great respect before the type , of surgeon who knows when not to operate and then doesn't operate. He is one of the great men of this earth. It is sad that most people refuse to listen to him, but listen to the man who says, "Let me operate on you, and you will soon feel wonderfully well." It is a sad quirk of our human nature always to be lieve the man who tells us what we want to hear. What Is a Homosexual? Last year, in the British Medical Journal there was a report of a three-man research team which worked in hos pitals and prisons to try to find out just what is a homo sexual. They found that, even among the prison cases, homo sexuality is no all-or-nothing affair. Only nine out of the 64 men studied were 100 per cent homosexual-the rest had varying degrees of sexual in terest in women. Half of the men preferred the company of other males, while 18 pre ferred the company of wom en. With only four exceptions, the men looked no different from other men with normal sex drives. In-many cases the father had been an alcoholic, even to the point of breaking up the home. I know that practically all of the homo sexuals I have ever studied have told me of some odd or alcoholic or mentally dis turbed relatives. Laboratory studies showed that the homo sexuality of the men inter viewed in England was not due to abnormalities in the functions of their glands of internal secretion. As I have said in previous columns, in some cases a "lady -like" homosexual has been inject ed with huge doses of male hormone without changing him a bit.
