Medford 2nd SECTION MEDFORD, Hungary Country of Despair Under Heel of Communism Vienna-ICPD-Hungary today little more than two and a hall years after Soviet tanks and jet fighters crushed the revolution of October, 1956 lives a life of despair with no hope of freedom. The Kremlin-installed re gime of Premier Ference Mu ennich and Communist Party boss Janos Kadar has estab lished an even sterner police regime than before the revolt and has taken strong steps to prevent another uprising. According to reliable re ports from Hungary, more than 2,000 persons have been executed so far for their part in the revolution. At The Family Council Editor's not. Tbe 'nil Council cotufsts ot a lodge a psychiatrist, three clergymen, a newspaper editor a women's editor and two writers. Each article is a summary of an actual report. The Family Council does not give advice: it merely reports on problems that have been dealt wth by responsible eenrie nr eranaloss Warren N. What's wrong with helping out an old friend? Betsy N. - But they live better than we do! Warren N. My wife and I aren't speaking to each oth er these days over an issue in which I am clearly in the right. Six months ago an old friend came to me and asked fgr a loan. This man was head over heels in debt because of illness in his family. He had "lost his job mainly because of the upset all this illness had caused. That's why he was unable to get a bank loan. Neither he nor his wife had any close relatives they could come to. He was about to lose his home. This same man's mother had been very kind and helpful to me when I was a young man living away from my family. She often used to invite me to dinner when I hadn't enough money to buy a decent one of my own. I gave him $500 and my wife is furious. I think her attitude is cold and selfish. Betsy N. This man just used Warren as a "soft touch." Warren calls him an old friend, but he hadn't seen him nearly ten years before this event. What kind of friend is that? This man and his family live better than we do. They have a beautiful home in one of the better sections. Why couldn't he borrow on his home? Is it our business to help out a man who doesn't want to risk lowering his standard of living? I doubt whether we'll ever have as much as he has. Has Warren a right to take from his own family to give to another? I also don't like the way this man sneaked around to get hold of Warren when I wouldn't be there. He must have guessed that I would be a tougher customer. As for his mother giving Warren some dinners a few centuries ago, well I certainly don't think that was worth $500. The Council - From the practical point of view, War ren may have made a bad mistake. Certainly, there is a lot fishy about the story of a man with a high standard of living who can't or won't get a finance company loar)' to day. But for the sake of tbe moral argument we'll coi cede that this man was in a desperate spot. We believe, first, that War ren was right to want to help a friend and second, that he HUGE BARGAIN Model FEATURES: 9.1 Cu. Ft. Capacity 13.2 Sq. New Strains on People The 21st Soviet Communist party Congress in March brought new strains on the Hungarian people with Kadar telling the country it was "trailing behind other Com munist nations in building socialism." . "We must summon all our forces to make up for trailing behind the others to come abreast of other peoples' de mocracies," Kadar declared. was right to want to repay an old kindness. This can't always be repaid by a score card. . . We do take exception to Warren's lending the money without discussing it with his wife. It does concern her. Wives are notoriously tougher than husbands on this subject. They put their fam ily's welfare above any other duty or outside tie. , We do not feel that this is always a correct ' position. Under certain conditions, a man might have some moral obli gation that calls for a sacri fice. But the man should be at least willing to have the thing out. Warren was ob viously afraid ' to face the music as far as his wife was concerned. However, it would have been so much better for him to have "had it out" before instead of after the loan was made. Talking things over with his wife might have helped him to see the issue more clearly. He might have become aware, of certain weaknesses in his friend's position. He might even have been able to help his friend in a better way if he had taken the time and trouble to probe a little further into the situation. A person who makes him self a soft touch is often one who enjoys a little too much the position of power afford ed by giving handouts. This is certainly no generosity in the best sense of the word. Peiping Claims Victories in Tibet Tokyo (UPD ' Peiping Radio Thursday claimed "tremen dous victories" in a Red Chi nese army offensive against a n t i - Communist Tibetan forces and said the rebellion in Lhasa had been completely quelled. At the same tsie, Peiping bitterly attacked India for the second straight day and sug gested it keep out of Tibetan affairs. The Communist New China News Agency said that when the rebellion was . crushed in Lhasa Chinese troops were "ordered to take punitive military action against the Tibetan clique of traitors." Tribune 24, 1959 10 Pages The belief in Vienna is that the Kremlin has told Kadar that Hungary must get back on its own feet and not expect to live forever on Russian loans, as it has been doing since, the 1956 uprising. Aid Necessary j According to Eastern ex perts here, Hungary could hardly have survived the post- revolution period without Rus sian aid. Even today, they add, Hungary's national pro duction is still far behind the pre-revolutionary level. Informed observers say that since 1956 Hungary must be regarded as the Soviet bloc's most serious liability. Russia's post-revolution aid included a loan of 875 million rubles (officially, $218,750,000) granted early in 1957 and an other loan of 300 million rubles ($75 million) for 1558. In addition to these loans, delivered partly in goods, oth er satellite countries granted Hungary financial aid in va rious forms totaling another $60 million. Must Pay Interest Starting next year, accord ing to an official Hungarian g o v e rnment announcement, the country must start paying interest on these loans, plac ing additional strains on the national budget. Ways and means of strength ening the Hungarian economy have been outlined since Ka dar's return from Moscow. The "only solution to help in building socialism is a speedy socialization of agricul ture," the government said. This means, according to sources here, that the Hun garian regime has returned to a policy of forced collectiv ization of farms, a system that practically disintegrated dur ing the revolution. Heat on Farmers The Kadar regime, in the first months of its rule, ab stained from exerting any pressure on farmers to bring them back to the collective farms. Kadar even went so far as to approve a limited free market where farmers were allowed to sell their products for profit. But the new agricultural policy means that the heat is on the farmers now. The party's Central Committee re cently called for the estab lishment of "collectivization boards" in villages in order to help form new collectives. Some 500 well-trained party functionaries were sent to the provinces to propagandize on the benefits of state-controlled farms. All indications are that the average Hungarian citizen will have to tighten his belt even more in the future than he has in the past. Man Arraigned on Bad Check Charges Charles William Murray, 34, of 335 South Front st., was arraigned in district court Wednesday on charges of ut tering and publishing a false check. He was bound over to the grand jury by Judge Roy Ba shaw with bail set at $1,500. He also waived the right to an attorney and preliminary hearing. Murray was arrested Tues day by Medford city police for cashing two checks in the Medford area earlier this month. .95 Enamel Glide Out Hydrator Warranty Boat Kits Can Take Hours of Careful Planning To Build New York -JUPB-Assembling your own boat? Remember -it takes more than two guys and a keg of beer to put to gether even the smallest pre fabricated kit boat. And it usually can't be done in a day even with power tools. If you're a real handcrafts man mainly because there is no electrical power available - a kit boat of the simplest style can take hours of care ful planning and labor. The planning is the most important part and the labor is just work. The first step after deciding how large and what style boat best suits your needs is to ask a boat dealer or a reputable old salt to recommend a manu facturer of boat kits. Leisure Construction Once you have place your order, start thinking about a convenient place out of the way of normal living-where construction can be accom plished at a leisurely pace. Garages, porches and recrea tion rooms are liable to be needed before you get through. Basements are suitable and work there can be done in rainy weather when the back yard might be too damp. Of course, everyone knows the basement door nas to be big enough vto haul out the com pleted boat. When the kit arrives, the first thing to do is dig for the directions and retire to soli tude for -careful study. Then check the various parts to see they all arrived, and figure what tools will be needed. Ceiling on Basic Speed Rule Urged Salem - (UPD - The State Traffic Safety Commission has voted to recommend to the Legislature adoption of a law putting a ceiling on Ore gon basic speed rule. The move also is supported by Gov. Mark Hatfield. The proposal calls for a maximum speed of 70 miles an hour in the state, unless otherwise posted, with the basic rule applying below the maximum. Also set would be a 20-mile-an-hour limit in school zones and a 30-mile-an-hour ceiling in urban districts. Any speed in excess of those designated would be a viola tion of the basic rule. There are about 10,000 eat ing places in New York City exclusive of refreshment stands. CHILDREN'S CANVAS SHOES SIZES If the kit comes equipped with a screw driver, don't -be misled by thinking this will be a one-tool job. Various size drills, a counter-sinking tool, a rasp, a saw and a hammer are also basic. If a power drill is used, the job goes more quickly, but, if not, a yankee screw driver or a brace with a screw-head bit are much easier than working with a simple hand screwdriv er. Most kit boats are built on a sawhorse-type form which is constructed first.
