Individual balloting by dis 1 cussion group members in 22 Oregon counties also recom mended the U.S. make greater use of the United Nations wherever possible. Ballots were tabulated this week by Oregon State college extension service on the dis cussion topic, "What Chal lenges to Diplomat and Citi zen?" Debate Foreign Policy Three-fourths of the voters thought U.S. citizens should debate foreign policy freelv at any time, while about 15 per cent said citizens should refrain from public debate during times of foreign doI icy crisisl About 50 per cent favored U.S. encouragement and help to private enterprise to play a larger role in foreign investment and economic de velopment, and 17 oer cent od- posed such help. Others ex pressed no opinion. Eighty-five per cent be lieved the U.S. should place greater emphasis on non-military phases of foreign policy such as economic develop ment, cultural exchange, and political cooperation. Two- thirds favored increased dip lomatic pay and prerequisites to develop professional career diplomats to serve in more posts. Concluding Discussion The concluding discussion of the series also brought a 90 per cent vote favoring par ticipation in Great Decisions next year. About 75 per cent said the series would give them better understanding of future news developments in foreign policy. Great Decisions is spon sored by Oregon State college extension service, the general extension division of the state system of higher education, Foreign Policy association. the World Affairs Council of Portland, Oregon state de-i partment of education, the state library, and other state wide organizations. Two-Car Crash Takes Seven Lives Palm Springs, Calif. (DPD - Seven persons were killed in a grinding two-car crash Wed nesday when one of the autos containing five persons was struck broadside as it turned off Highway 60-70-90 about eight miles east of here. All occupants in both cars were fatally injured. California highway patrol men said a car driven by Jean M. F. Deluz, 50, Ana heim, Calif., smashed into the turning auto driven by Jack W. Friedman, 72, Banning, Calif. Patrolmen said the De luz car was speeding. No skid marks were found at the scene. "We had to call two trucks to pull the cars apart," said Sgt. I. I. Baldwin. The dead were, in the Fried man car, Friedman and his wife, Martha, about 65; then housekeeper, Mrs. Nora Pearl Baker, about 65; Horace Pot ter, 74, and his wife, ' Ruth, about 70, of Banning. : In the Deluz car, Deluz was killed along with his passen ger, Gertrude Veltre, 40, Ar cadia, Calif. Commission Holds Uncashed Checks Salem - Ninety-two checks involving $2,891 are being held by the Oregon State In dustrial Accident commission because of incorrect mailing addresses of the workers in volved, according to Chair man William A. Callahan. Twenty-seven other checks in volving $993 and issued more than two years ago never have been presented for payment, he added. Unless the checks are claim ed or cashed soon, workers may lose the amount to which they are entitled, Callahan warned. Workers whose checks are being held may receive them upon furnishing the Salem of fice of the commission with the following information: Name, social security num ber, date of injury, name of emDloyer at time of injury, and signature.
