T2 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Tuesday, April 21, 1939 The Family Council Editor t note: Xne r wil Council consists ol a judge a psychiatrist. Mre clereymen, a newspaper editor a women's editor and two writers Each article is a summary of an actual report. The Family Council does not give advice; it merW report on problems that have been dealt wtta by responsible acencies ana ooasclora Mrs. K. R. B r u c e goes around starving! Margaret R Why would I want to starve my own husband? Mr- K. R. I have recently gotten into a terrible feud with my daughter-in-law for the silliest rason. Margaret has been trying to get my son to diet. He really desn't need it. Bruce is over six feet and a big-boned man so he can carry a lot of weight-Every one in his fa ther's family has always been big. If he lost weight he'd just look like a long gangling scarecrow. Anyway' I don't argue with Margaret about what she serves Bruce in their home. That's her business. But I do reserve the right to feed him whatever I want to when he visits me. Bruce loves my cooking always has. I can almost cry when I see the way he gobbles up one of my fruit pies or my special beef pie The poor boy goes around starving! He's an active man and needs fuel. Margaret R. N o w why would I want to starve my own husband to death? My mother-in-law doesn't give me credit for any judgment. , I know that Bruce needs more food than most men, but I also know that his doctor said he'd be much better off if he shed about 25 pounds. Unfortunately, Bruce is hard to deal with when it comes to food. The more I cut dovon his intake at home, the more he cheats on the outside. I have to use all my energy and ingenuity to prepare spe cial meals for him and then off he goes to his mother's for a late evening visit and a midnight snack. The worst of it is that Bruce makes these visits sev eral evenings a week. His fa ther died a few months ago and he doesn't want his moth er to be -lonely evenings. I wouldn't mind if she didn't feed him. m The Council: When Mrs. K- R. sets her opinion up against the doctor's she is on The Happiest Home Is the Home You Own Slightly Suburban ' Only 2Vi yrs. eld.- Immaculate 2 B.R. home with fireplace - large living room 82x172 landsced I o t. If that were the only problems involved here we'd tell her to stop and let it go at that. But more is inyolved. One element is the fact that nobody can lose weight un less he really wants to. A man whose wife is ready and will ing to prepare special meals is way ahead of the game, but he must also completely ac cept the fact that he is on a diet and feel a keen desire to see that weight go. Margaret should have the doctor speak to Bruce again and impress upon him strong ly, not casually, the import ance of losing that weight. This will strengthen Bruce's resistance to tempta tion. However, the less temp tation he must face the better for him. The spirit may be strong, but the flesh is all too weak. So it is important for Mrs. K. R. to accept this diet of Bruce's as well- It may be worthwhile for everyone concerned to recog nize the significance of food in our lives. From infancy we associate food with comfort, security, protection. Instinc tively we fear hunger. If we want to make ourselves feel good we feed ourslves. A mother naturally responds to this desire. It makes her happy to be able to give to a child in this way and some times an older child tries to make his mother happy by ac cepting food from her. It appears to us that a big element in this case is Bruce's desire to comfort his mother in her widowhood. With her husband gone, she has fallen back upon an old role her position as mother for secur ity in the knowledge that she is still needed. But it's not a good solution for either her or Bruce. We'd suggest that mother and son try taking some long walks in the evening if com panionship is the most import ant objective. (COPYRIGHT 1959, GEN ERAL FEATURES CORP.)
