Many writers tell me that their doctor gives them only five or 10 minutes in the of fice. He tells them that he just hasn't the time in which to talk to them. I feel very sorry for such patients, and I feel very sorry for their doctor. He cannot be satisfied with what he is doing. If I were giving my patients only five to 10 minutes each, I would be making many terri ble mistakes in diagnosis. I would have to be making mis takes, because in hundreds Science Program Director Named Eugene-Clarence O. Diebel, professor of chemistry at Southern Oregon college, Ash land, has been appointed di rector of the University of Oregon's science demonstration-lecture program. The program is supported by a $382,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. It will involve training of 20 high school science teachers here this summer. Diebel received bachelors and masters degree from the University of Oregon, and from 1956 to 1958 was an assistant professor of chemis try here. As director of the training program he will be on leave from Southern Ore gon college. Diebel will work directly under Harry Alpert, dean of the university graduate school, which administers the pro gram. Dean Alpert has also an nounced the appointment of an executive committee for the science project, which will provide advisory services. Lloyd Staples, head of the department of geology, is committee chairman. Other members are James Kezer, as sociate professor of biology; Bernd Crasemann, associate professor of physics; and Paul B. Jacobson, dean of the school of education. Princess Grace Declared Expecting Paris -(UPD Princess Grace of Monaco is expecting a third child, a Paris newspaper claimed today. Roundup Emeritus Consultant In Mavo Clinic Medicine. Emertrni Professor of Medicine. Mayo CUnle of cases one has to talk to a patient during three or tour visits of a haif-hour each be fore "tne cat comes out of the bag" and one learns what is reaiiy tne trouble: pernaps a terriole family sorrow. 1 realize how hard it is for a patient to find an able doc tor who will talk to nim long euoufeii. Today even, some pro fessors of medicine have sucn unquestioning lai'th in lab or a Lory and x-ray reports mat tney see no sense in "wasting their time ' lauting to peo ple. Naturally, wnen a wom an s symptoms are ail due to tne fact that she lias a great sorrow, or sue is going insane, the humea doctor must miss tne diagnosis. Often in tnese cases he orders removed a periectiy harmless and symp tomless gallstone or a "n broid" of the womb. What is worse, if today a wise "eider - statesman" in medicine writes a paper for a medical journal, suowmg that in thousands ox cases, the diagnosis just cannot be made from laboratory reports, the editor is likely to send it back, perhaps with a con temptuous note to the effect that the writer is old-fashioned and is not keeping up-to-date! Assistants Didn't Work I cannot much blame over ly busy doctors, because 40 years ago when my practice grew too big for me, I could n't find any satisfactory way of handling the situation. I refused to see more people in a day than I could talk to, and treat with care, and I re fused to put my prices so as to scare away two-thirds of the patients. The only other possibility left was to get as sistants, but that plan didn't work well. If I got a really good and ambitious and keen assistant, he soon left me to practice on his own. The only man likely to stay with me was a man who wasn't as able as I wanted him to be. I still don't know a really good solution for the prob lem of the doctor who is see ing three times as many pa tients a day as he should be seeing.
