Service Officers Association Plan State Meet Here - Approximately 200 persons from throughout Oregon are Ynrter1 in attpnrl the 23rrl semi-annual conference of the Oregon County Service Offi cers association when it meets here April 22 through 24, ac cording to Jerry V. Bianconi, veterans service officer here. Guests will include various service officers, city and county officials and represen tatives of Oregon veterans or ganizations. Two of the speakers will be Joseph M. Farber, California state director of veteians af fairs, and Samuel Bowes, Grants Pass attorney and past state commander of the Amer ican Legion. Oregon Director Also expected to speak at the conference is H- C. (Hub) Saalfeld, director of the Or egon department of Veterans Affairs. Farber was announced as new director of veterans af fairs in California by Gov, Edmund Brown in January, He was state commander of the American Legion in 1955- 56 and state vice-commander In 1952-53. A native of Los Angeles, Farber served 4V4 years as an Infantryman in the U. S Army in World War II. After the war, he served with the American Military govern ment in Germany in charge of food and supplies for dis placed personnel. Former Reporter The Oregon veterans affairs director formerly served as a " reporter and advertising man ager on the Stayton Mail newspaper until he entered the service in September, 1942. He enlisted as a private and following assignment to the Army Air Corps received his commission. He is now a major in the Air Force Re- erve. After his return to Marion county, Saalfeld became Mar lon county veterans service officer In December, 1945, nd was later appointed di rector of the newly created bonus division in the state de partment of veterans' affairs. ; He was appointed to his present post on February, 1953, upon the resignation of William F. Gaarenstroom. 1 The opening session of the Conference gets under way Wednesday, with registration at 9 a.m. at the Medford hotel. Bianconi will conduct the opening ceremonies at County Official County Judge Earl Miller is scheduled as guest speaker for the morning session. Speakers during the Wed nesday afternoon session will Include Eric W. Allen Jr., managing editor, Medford Mail Tribune; Arthur Cham berlain, regional director, U. S. department of labor; and George A. Reid, regional vet erans federal employment representative. Samuel Bowes is scheduled to speak at the no-host ban quet in Medford hotel that evening. Telephone SP 2-21 11 U.S. Will Search For Space Capsule Vandenberg AFB, Calif. - (UPD-The United States was to conduct an aerial search over the vast top of the world Arctic wastes for the space capsule ejected from the Dis coverer II satellite, using some foreign air bases if pos sible, it was disclosed Friday. There was no direct word here on progress toward find ing the 160-pound scientific package, but the Norwegian government at Oslo said it would give permission to U.S. planes to search in the Spitz bergen area. The capsule, capable of carrying living organisms in orbit around the earth, was ejected from piscoverer III Tuesday somewhere in . the polar region about 30 hours after a successful launch. Retiring School Official to be Honored May 8-9 Central Point-Many alumni,- faculty and friends of school district 6C are expect ed to take part in the H. P. Jewett homecoming days May 8 and 9. The event will honor the retiring superintendent of schools, who leaves the post in August after 37 years with the Central Point district. Assemblies in honor of Jewett are scheduled for May 8 at Crater High school, Cen tral Point Junior high school, Jewett Elementary school, Hanby school at Gold Hill and Sams Valley Elementary school. A track meet at Crater High school with Central Point Junior High school par ticipating will be held at 2:30 p.m. May 8. Rex Putnam, state super intendent of public instruc tion, will speak at the pro gram at 8 p.m. in the Crater High school gymnasium. In troduction will be made of classes and faculty from 1922 to 1959 and Jewett will speak. . Registration will take place at 7 p.m. Alumni day May 9 will begin with registration and get-togethers at 10 a.m., an alumni potluck picnic and en tertainment at noon, a track meet at 2:30 p.m. and indi vidual class reunions during the evening. Martin Deposit Box Fails To Hold Clue Portland -UPD - Authorities Thursday opened the safe de posit box of the missing Ken neth Martin family, but found no clues to the mysterious dis appearance, Sheriff Francis Lambert said. Sheriff Lambert accompan ied Mrs. Herschel Dorsey, Ken Martin's sister, and guar dian of the estate, to the U.S. National bank. Found in the box were in surance policies, securities, personal papers and the title to the 1954 Ford station wa gon in which the family of five disappeared last December. Ant ley, who received his bache lor of arts degree in history at Millsaps college, Miss., ob tained his master of social science degree in 1956 at the U n i v e r s ity of Mississippi. Since that date, he has done advanced work at Emory uni versity, Ga., : and Columbia university, N. Y. Hia back ground -in teaching includes public school work in Georgia and a junior college position at Spartanburg, S. C. in 1957 58. A member of the Ameri can Association of University Professors, Antley lists his other interests as listening to serious music and traveling. He served in the Army Medi cal Corps 1951-53. With his wife, Dolores, and two child ren, Barbara and Corinne, he resides at 436 Wightman st., Ashland. High School Seniors Accepted lor NROTC Three seniors at Medford High school have been accept ed for naval reserve officers training when they enter col lege this fall, school officials reported last week. They are Anthony Allyn Monroe, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Monroe, 445 Old Stage rd.; Gerald Allen Vice, son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Vice, 527 Barnes ave.; and Robert Lee Steele, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam W. Steele, Grif fin Creek rd. The boysvwere accepted by the navy following successful tests, interviews and physical examinations. Monroe has applied for en trance to Stanford university, and Steele at Oregon State college, school officials stated. NO COMPLAINTS Coldwater, Mich. -(UPD - There were no taxpayer com plaints when the city council voted itself a 100 per cent pay increase. The council gets no pay, so 100 per cent of noth ing is still nothing. . . . ., Equalization Board Session To Start May 11 Jackson county ' board of equalization will be in session for one week starting May 11, according to County Assessdr Ray Schumacher. The board will meet con cerning assessments made for the J 959-60 tax year,- Schu macher said. Changes in value cannot be made by the as sessor after May 1, he added. A taxpayer may get an ad justment on the valuation of his property by requesting a reappraisal from the assessor. Then, if he still believes his property is not valued at mar ket value or equally with Other property he can petition the board for a review of his assessments, Schumacher ex plained. Evidence Needed Evidence must be submitted on the cost and market value of property and similar prop erties, profit and loss state ments of income and expense on income properties and any other information which will reflect the value of properties showing why assessment should be lowered, the county assessor explained. Twenty-five per cent of the market value will be used as a base for determining as sessed valuation this year, he said. Assessment rolls must be completed by May 1 by the assessor's office and turned over to the board of equal ization which will check the rolls. Expected to increase the as sessor's office work load is the recent consolidation af fecting six school districts. Committee Tables Dunes Memorial Salem - (UPD The Senate Roads and Highways commit tee Thursday tabled a memo rial asking Congress to sup port a bill by Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D. - Ore.) that would create a national park in the Florence area of the Oregon coast. Neuberger's bill would set aside 35,000 acres for a park in the dunes area, and has been the object of protests from Florence groups. The committee voted 5-2 to table the memorial. Two sena tors, Andrew Naterlin (D. Newport) and Richard Chap man (D.-Coos Bay) opposed the motion to table. REQUEST DENIED ; Chicago - (UPE - Mrs. Marily L. Ware, 27, asked for a di vorce on grounds her hus band, Henry, 31, squirted her with a water pistol. The jury turned her down. Main Friday on charges of extortion. The case was continued fol lowing the appointment of Bruce Manley, Medford, as his attorney. Dexter is being held on $1,500 bail. Sheriff's officers arrested Dexter Mondav after David Lee Mathias, 28, of 724 Alder St., Medford, had reported a case of attempted blackmail to the sheriffs office. Pleaded Guilty James. Douglas Head, 21, of Roseburg, pleaded guilty to district attorney's information Friday charging him with burglary not in a dwelling. Judge Main gave him a two year suspended sentence. Head is" charged with bur glarizing the McCormick Farm Equipment store here on Dec. 11, 1958. William Robert Eberhardt, 36, of Ashland, was given a MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Sunday, April 19, 1959 9 three year suspended sentence in circuit court Friday. He had pleaded guilty Feb. 10 to a charge of uttering and pab lishing a false check. Eberhardt was arraigned in circuit court on district at torney's information Feb. 10 and a pre-sentencing report was ordered Feb. 25.
