16 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Sunday, April 19, 1939 Influenza Heads List of Communicable Diseases A total of 323 cases of in fluenza were recorded by the Jackson county public health department for the week end ing April 17, according to Dr. A. Erin Merkel, county f ealth officer. This compares to 85 for the previous week and 92 cases two weeks ago. Since the first of this year 971 flu cases have been reported compared to 236 cases for the same period last year. This covers the per iod from Jan. 1 to April 17, Dr. Merkel said. German measles rated sec ond in number of cases of communciable diseas es re ported in the county for the week ending April 17, with a total of 115. Sixty-four of these occurred in Phoenix, 34 in Medford, 9 in Central Point, 3 in Jacksonville, 2 in Gold Hill and one each jn Shady Cove, Rogue River and Trail. Red Measles Cases of red measles for the same period totalled 25 in the county, of which 15 were in Central Point, 8 in Talent, 6 in Phoenix and one in Ash land. Three cases each were report ed for Medford and Central Point, 2 each in Jacksonville, Applegate, Ruch and one in Gold Hill. Three cases of mumps were reported for Jacksonville and one in Medford. One case of strep throat each were reported in Med ford, Ashland and Trail. One case of scarlet fever was not ed in Gold Hill and two cases of impetigo in Phoenix. State Power Body Salem-(LTD -Support for a state power commission bill appeared firmer Friday after the House Judiciary commit tee unanimously approved an amendment referring the bill to the people. The bill will probably be up for a vote in the House Monday. Under the bill (HB 528) a three man power develop ment commission would be set up. It would have the power to buy, sell, generate and transmit power. . The bill, sponsored by Rep. Al Flegel (D-Roseburg) and others, was sent back to the House Judiciary committee when supporters felt it did not have a chance to pass without the referral clause. The Judiciary committee, although it adopted the re ferral amendment unanimous ly, made no recommendation on the bill when sending it back to the House floor. Authority of the state to enter into the power business has been in the Oregon con stitution since 1932 but neither the Legislature nor the people has ever imple- ftBPIT INSTALLED WALL TO WALL On a RUBBER (51 Sq. Yd. Complete Joint Commission For Fish and Game Urged by Skelton Salem - (UPD - Kep. Keith Skelton (D-Eugene) urged Fri day that the Legislature merge the state game and fish commissions. He made the suggestion at a meeting of the Joint Ways and Means committee, which approved budgets of $8,933, 603 for the game commission and $3,176,489 for the fish commission for the next bi ennium. Skelton said he not only would vote against both ap priation bills but would make an effort on the floor of the House to have them returned to the Ways and Means com mittee. Too Complicated Sen. Dan Thiel (D-Gear-hart) agreed that such a mer ger was desirable and predict ed it would come eventually, but said the move was too complicated for this session to consider. "Our sub-committee work ed for two' months on these two budgets and held count less hearings at which all in terested parties testified," Thiel said. He added that he was "not exactly happy" with them but that they were the best that could be worked out at this session. Meet For Two Weeks Committee Chairman Sen. Alfred Corbett (D- Portland) proposed at the meeting that a legislative committee meet for two weeks immediately af ter the general election next year to work on tax and ap propriation bills. He said he believed that would shorten the 1961 ses sion considerably, and sug gested that the interim com mittee be composed of pros pective members of the joint ways and means committee and the senate and house tax ation committees of the 1961 session. ooo PAID Rep. Clarence Barton (D Coquille), chairman of the House Tax committee, said he doubted if such a committee could do much in two weeks, and Sen. Jean Lewis (D-Port-land) said she did not like the idea of this sesssion's nam ing committees for the next session. Sen. Lewis said she prefer red a suggestion made earlier by Sen. Edwin Durno (R-Med-ford) that such a committee be named after the 1961 ses sion had been organized and then have the legislature ad journ for two weeks while the committee worked. Film Showing to Conclude Library Week Events Here Concluding local observance of National Library Week the film, "Yours for the Asking" will be presented by KBES-TV at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon. The film, produced by Washington State library, de scribes , the regional library service which has reached a high point of development in that state, with cities and counties, or groups of coun ties, joining in order to pro vide the advantages of large public library systems to the most remote rural areas. The improbable name given the manned rocket project is Mrs. V, meaning "maneuver able and recoverable space vehicle." Work Due Next Year Details of the nearest ap proach yet to a Buck Rogers space ship were disclosed Fri day at the first World Con gress of Flight by Rear Adm. John E. Clark, deputy director of the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency. Clark indicated that work on Mrs. V. would start "dur ing the coming year" and that the military space ship will take up where civilian space agency's Mercury Project for manned satellites leaves off. Clark said that if Russia is first to put a man in space and safely return him the psy chological impact will be tre mendous. Within Close Reach "Such manned satellite flights could bring the Com munist bloc within close reach of military control of space if the United States is not equally capable," the admiral said. All space exploration to date has involved either satel lites that are kept in orbit by balancing centrifugal force and gravity or so-called lunar probes which follow ballistic or bullet-like paths. Mrs. V, however, will be a maneuverable space ship which pilots can use for what Clark called "strategic or tac tical situations in space." Epidemic of 'Flu' Not True Influenza Portland (UPD The state board of health said yesterday that one of the viruses causing a flu-like respiratory epidemic has been identified. . The board said the virus is Adenovirus. It was isolated Thursday from specimens tak en from' two Portland resi dents and one Oregon City resident. Identification confirms be lief held by the health board that the current epidemic is not caused by influenza. Health officials said the outbreak, which has struck more than 16,700 Oregon resi dents, is past its peak in Port land and is at or near the peak elsewhere in the state. State Farm Union Salem -A charge that the Oregon legislature has "fumbled" a chance for extra tax revenues that could am ount to at least $54 million for the biennium without a sales tax and without increas ing income taxes on low in comes is leveled at the legis lature by the current Oregon Farmer union, official organ of the Oregon State Farmers union. The farm paper alleges that a "bipartisan coalition, dom inated by a few reactionary leaders in both parties, is try ing to saddle a sales tax on the state."
