Guessing PCIL Flag Winner Considered Mtfncult Task United Press International Touting the winner of the Pacific Coast league flag chase which begins Friday, looks tougher than trying to predict how many times Spo kane's brash Bobby Bragan will be given the umpire's thumb. Bragan is a most unpredict able sort who, among other things, once whipped out a water pistol on an umpire fol lowing a questionable de cision. - - - - The experts call for a three way scramble for the pen nant among Phoenix, Spo kane and San Diego. Defending champion Phoe nix is given a good chance to repeat, but on paper they do not appear as strong as the club that belted a record 205 homeruns last season. Dusty Rhodes' 25 hr's, 100 rbi's and first baseman Willie McCovey .319 average, 89 rbi's, are back to lead the Giants. But gone, at least for now, is shortstop Andre Rodg ers, who led the league with a .354 average. Alou, Wagner Gone The Giants also won't be expected to have the part- time services of such sluggers as Felipe Alou, Leon Wagner and Willie Kirkland, all of whom figure to last the year with the parent San Francis co Giants. Spokane, a farm club of the Los Angeles Dodgers, appears .to have strengthened. The main reason is big Steve Bil- ko, who figures to belt at least 40 homers and probably more. The Indians also look to have solid pitching with Roger Craig. Bob Giallombaxdo, Phil Paine and Chris Nich- olosi. San Diego, with George Catfish Metkovich at the helm has a slick operating double play combination in second baseman Billy punter and shortstop Billy Moran. Earl Averill and Dave Pope, the big offensive guns on last; season's second place Padre team, are gone, but general manager Ralph Kiner says he expects plenty of help from Cleveland. ' Padre pitching has an abun dance of experience with Bill. Werle, Bob Alexander, Steve Ridzik and Bud Podbielan. Bees Miss Stuart . Salt Lake City, which last year had belting Dick Stuart for half a season, looms as the darkhorse of the circuit. Veteran Coast Leaguer Car lot Bernier and swift moving Howie Goss head the Salt Lake outfield corps and the mound crew will have Dick Hall, Don Urquhart, Don Rowe and Johnny Oldham. Additional help from Pitts burgh is expected. Jim Mc Daniel, the league homerun king last season with 37 cir cuit clouts, may or may not stick with Pittsburgh. Vancouver, which finished third last year, has lost four top pitchers. -Back are 42-year-old Joe Hatten,- a starter and reliefer who won nine games. Erv Palica, a 15-game winner, and 22-year-old Gor dy Sundin, a 64" giant who registered six wins last sea son. Metro is counting heavily upon newly obtained Charles Estrada, who had a 15-11 1 A II .. MEDF0IUTRIBUN1 1 uynu li & mark with Knoxville last sea son and Fred Besana, a south paw who won 11 and lost 12 for Louisville. Portland, provided it can get solid pitching, could eas ily find its way into the pen nant scrap. They boast such veterans as Nini Tornay, a .300 hitting catcher last sea son; George Freese 35 hr's, 81 rbi's; Dave Melton, Bob Di Pietro and Jim Greengrass. Manager Tommy Heath says he looks for a third place fin ish at least. Top Beaver hurl ers include Vic Lombardi, Larry Jansen, Glen Cox and Howard Reed. Kansas City is expected to send along help before the major league cut down date. Solons Need Help Sacramento, managed by Bob Elliott, has received some help from major league clubs, but additional reinforcements are necessary before they can be counted a contender for the flag. Seattle, cellar dwellers last season, is up for a major re building job under the capa ble eye of Freddy Hutchinson. The Rainiers have added three infielders who have played on triple-A pennant winners in the past two years. They are first baseman Frank Kel lert, second baseman Jack Dittmar and shortstop Harry Malmberg. The veteran crew is rounded out by Eddie Ka zak who came to Seattle from San Diego late last season. Dee Fondy, veteran big leaguer, and Elmer Valo an other long-time major league campaigner, are slated for outfield work. St. Mary's Plans To Enter Hayward; Phoenix Doubtful St. Mary's high of Medford will enter the Hayward relays this week with a limited force of nine men spread over eight events. The Crusaders will compete in the Class C division, events of which are scfieduled for Friday. St. Mary's will be without the services of its best quar-ter-miler, Roguer Hout, ac cording to Coach Bill McKib bin. Hout has a bad back, the mentor reported. McKibbin said that more squad members would be tak en if the field events were relay tests. They are individ ual events, however. " ' Entry of Dick Evans and Terry Cooper of the Crusad ers in a decathlon meet April 24 and 25 at Canyonville is being considered, according to the coach. Phoenix Whether Phoe nix high school enters the re lays will depend on the out come of the track s-juad meet ing' about noon today. Coach Albert (Hap) Consbruck re ports that many of his spike men are short on sleep this week because of orchard heat ing. Some others are on the sick list with measles or flu - Phoenix had planned to enter most of the track and field events. Excepted would be the distance and sprint medleys. Nearly 100 high school teams will take part Friday and Saturday in the 22nd an nual Hayward Relays at Eu gene. Liston weighed 212V pounds to Wil liams 210V4. Liston, a 3-1 favorite, dropped Williams for an eight count with a solid left hook in the third round. Williams went down again seconds later under a barrage of punches and struggled to his feet at the count of nine. That's when referee Jimmy Peerless halted the fight to save Wil liams from further punish ment. T got the idea that I could slug him," said Wil liams, who suffered his first defeat in his last 12 starts and only the third of his 47-fight career. "That's where I made my mistake." MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Thursday, April 16, 1959 9 Desoto Announces New Power System For Future Gars Chicago The predicition that cars could be driven by four high-speed electric rotors receiving their engery from a totally new source of power has been announceded by De Soto Division. The concept was revealed as De Soto unveiled a three eights scale model of an "idea car" called the "De Soto Cella I." J. B. Wagstaff, De Soto general manager, termed the "idea car" and its power theory "an exploration -of styling ideas and advanced engineering concepts which might be realized in a De Soto within the next generation.'" Electrochemical System As conceived by De Soto engineers, the De Soto Cella I, would be powered by a revo lutionary electrochemical sys tem. Stylists have also envision ed many new safety and con venience features which could be incorporated into the De Soto Cella I. "In this engineering con cept," A. E. Kimberly, De Soto chief engineer, explained, "we have discarded the time-honored piston engine in favor of the chemical interaction of hydrogen and oxygen gases as the primary source of automotive power." The idea car's name, "Cella, is derived from the' Latin and refers to a power source "con tained in a cell." In the De Soto engineering concept th hydrogen and oxygen gases would be fed into the cell with , the resulting chemical interaction being converted directly into electrical energy. Similar in Principle Kimberly explained that this conversion to electrical energy would be similar in principle to the operation of a present-day commercial dry charge battery, wherein elec trical energy is generated only when the battery is filled with fluid. "The electric current," h said, "would then be utilized to drive four high-speed, light weight traction motors, one geared directly to each wheel." "The use of four light weight, high speed geared mo tors would allow them to be positioned adjacent to the wheels where they would drive through short, univer- sal-jointed shafts to independ ently suspended wheels," Kim berly said. "If ultimate weight reductions are realized, it may even be possible to con sider mounting the motors directly to the wheels."
