MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Monday, April 13, 1959 Cepeda, Lollar Blast (Giants, White Sox Onto League Heads By FRED DOWN United Press International The potent bats of Orlando Cepeda and Sherman Lollar have the unbeaten San Fran cisco Giants and . Chicago White Sox off and running today in starts that take the edge off perfect get-aways by the favored pennant contend ers. Neither the Milwaukee Braves nor the New York Yankees has lost a game but a look at the standings shows that each has ground to make up. The Giants' three-game sweep of the St. Louis Car dinals gave them a half-game edge on the Braves and the White Sox' three-game wrap- up of the Detroit Tigers earn ed them a one-game lead over the Yankees. Standings at this stage of SF Shows Flag Fever San Francisco -(LTD- Cynics might say that it is a little early but it looks as though San Francisco is suffering from a severe case of pennant fever. The undefeated San Fran ciscans returned home last night and were met by a host of dignitaries and an estimat ed 5,000 fans. Today, the tempo increased with the team slated to get a hero's welcome in a gala par ade through downtown San Francisco. Big Salufe N Twelve thousand balloons, 1,000 pounds of confetti and plenty of ticker-tape were to be showered on the team, as pom-pom girls, college bands and the leather-lunged Fog horn Murphy saluted the Giants. The parade was to end on the steps of City Hall with Mayor George Christopher presenting each Giant with a set of cufflinks. The first home game is Tuesday with a full house a near certainty at Seals stad ium as the Giants host the Chicago Cubs. Jack Sanford is to make his debut on the hill for the locals. Norm Sieburn Pays Off Debt New York (UPD Solemn Norm Siebern says he's simply paying back a debt he owes Casey Stengel. Siebern's initial payment took the form of an eighth inning home run that brought the Yankees a 3-2 opening game victory over the Red Sox in a frigid 42-degree tem perature Sunday at Yankee stadium. "I owe Casey a whole lot," Siebern said quietly, without attempting to dramatize. "I don't see how anyone can get any lower than I was after what happened in the World Series, but he stuck with me and you can bet I'm going to give him a little extra." Siebern's appearance in left field at Yankee stadium Sun day was his first there since he butchered up the fourth game of last year's World Series and helped Milwaukee take a three-games to one lead in the classic. the race don't mean much, of course, but the point is that two strong contenders not two heavily favored defend ing champions have made the most of the few games played so far. Cepeda, the National league "rookie of the year" in 1958 when he hit .312, delivered the key blow in a 6-3 victory Sunday after driving in four of the Giants' five runs Satur day night. The Giants had ral lied to tie at 3-3 on Willie Mays' two-run triple but the score was still tied when Ce peda went to bat with two out and Jim Davenport on base in the ninth. Turley Wins Opener The 21-year-old native of Ponce, R.R., snapped the tie with a triple that - put the Giants ahead, 4-3, and Felipe Alou followed with a homer that gave them their final margin of victory. Lollar, who is hitting .533 and has driven in five runs in three games, drove in two runs Sunday as the White Sox beat the Tigers, 5-3. Lollar had three hits in each of the White Sox' first two victories and has made eight safeties in 15 tries. The world champion New York Yankees finally got un derway after two rain-outs and beat the Boston Red Sox, Yanks Assign Bob Marf-yn to Richmond Club New York - (UPD - Tom Car roll, a $40,000 "bonus baby" from Notre Dame, who had been unable to gain a starting job with the New Yok Yank ees, was regarded as the key man today in the latest playe: swap between . the Yankees and the Kansas City A's. Carroll and outfielder Russ Snyder of the Yankees' Rich mond farm club of the Inter national league went to the A's in exchange for infielder Mike Baxes and outfielder Bob Martyn. The Yankees immediately cut their roster to 29 players by assigning Baxes and Mar tyn to ' Richmond. Baxes hit 212 in 79 games for the A's last year while Martyn hit 261 in 95 games, mostly as a pinch-hitter. Two Shot Men Better Record Honolulu-IUPB-By the time the 1959 track season has end ed, the current world shotput record of 63 feet 2 inches should have been shattered. At Tempe, Ariz., Saturday, Dallas Long broke the mark unofficially four times in an exhibition with a top put of 64 feet 6 inches. Bill Nieder of the San Fran cisco Olympic Club also bet tered the record in an exhibi tion here Saturday. A slim crowd of a thousand watched the former Kansas star hoist the 16-pound ball 63 feet 8V2 inches. Nieder's best before that was 61 feet 9 inches. Officials say that Nieder's put will be submitted as a new world mark. Bob DiPietro's two-run sin gle capped a three-run Port land rally that tied the game in the ninth. Chuck Churn, Seattle's sec ond pitcher, was the winner. Marty Kutyna, the third Port land pitcher, was the loser. Ted Tappe led the 14-hit Se attle attack with three singles in four trips. It was the Rainiers' 12th Sunshine League victory against eight defeats. Port land's exhibition record is now 7-13. HAPPY HORSE Miami -(UPD -The roan colt by Native Dancer purchased by Mrs. Anson Bigelow for $50,000 as a yearling in 1958 has been named Mito - which means "happy" in Polynesian. 3-2, on World Series hero Bob Turley's two-hitter and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, in the only other games. Al Worthington, who took over in the eighth inning, picked up the San Francisco victory after lefty Mike Mc Cormick yielded three runs and six hits in seven innings. The Cardinals scored all their runs in the first inning aided by errors by Alou, Ce peda and Andre Rodgers but Vinegar Bend Mizell couldn't hold the lead against the hard hitting Giants. Siebern Homers Lollar singled home a White Sox run in the first inning and then scored on rookie Norm Cash's firs t major league homer but the Tigers pecked away at Dick Dono van until they drew even in the bottom of the fifth. The White Sox took the lead right back in the sixth on Jim Lan dis' triple and Lollar's single and added an insurance run in the eighth on two errors and Al Smith's sacrific fly. Norm Siebern, playing his first game at Yankee Stadium since his losing due with the sun in the fourth game of the 1958 World Series, homered in the eighth to get the defend ing world champions off to a successful start. Turley didn't yield a hit until Pete Runnels doubled in the seventh and wasn't touched for the second Red Sox hit until Vic Wertz singled with two out in the ninth. Singles by Siebern, Yogi Berra, Gil McDougald and Marv Throneberry pro duced a 2-0 Yankee lead in the first inning. Don Demeter's two-run sev enth-inning double put the Dodgers ahead, 4-3, and a dou ble by Gil Hodges and a single by Ron Fairly produced an insurance run in the eighth. Johnny Klippstein, who pitch ed the middle three innings, gained credit for the windfall though Clem Labine finished up. Labine allowed two hits and one walk and struck out one in his three frames. 1 "' " ' 1 "' MNESCORES: American Leaene Boston , 000 000 200 2 2 0 New York .... 200 000 Olx 3 8 0 Brewer 0-1 and White.
