Peter V-l am 17 and plan ning to start college next fall. I am very worried about a particular problem involving my girl friend. Gwen and I have been go ing steady for nearly two years and I feel that we are really in love. She wants to go to college too, but she thinks that we can get mar ried in another two years if we both work part time and save our money. : I have promised my par ents that I won't marry until I graduate. " They say that I should give Gwen up and date others for the time I go tp college. I don't particularly feel like going out with oth ers, but I'd be willing to do it if Gwen didn't raise such a fuss about it. J2.8S to get him to give one up, His mother has him tied so tight to her apron strings that he has even asked me not to call him at home because he's REQ. s5.59 afraid of what she'll say. I know all the arguments against early marriage, but I don't think 19 is very early If you are both mature. I feel REQ. s3.29 that we have grown up a lot since we've gone out together and that we'll certainly be capable of making a good REQ. PI. 39 marriage after another two years. By the way, all our steady dating hasn't lowered our school grades, so why would getting married hurt? The Council: The trend to ward college marriages Was started by veterans several years older than the average college student. To some ex tent these men were mentally and emotionally prepared for marriage. They at least had some exposure to the world outside their immediate home and f amily-and they did have some support from the G.I. Bill. Even so, many found the going very rough when chil dren appeared on the scene. . But the veterans'set a fash- Ion that intrigued their young er schoolmates. Here the boys involved were 18 to 22. the girls a bit younger, and neither had been weaned from home. In most cases they had never become well ac REG. $4.98 quainted with other members of the opposite sex. They had "gone steady" from their earliest teens. , The fact that some sudh REG. $2.39 marriages turned out success fully is no indication that it was a good idea. The sur vivors of some of the best admit that they would have .been better off if they had waited. Our answer must be mainly directed to Gwen for she, like most girls with unready boy friends, is putting on the pres sure. In her eagerness to get a husband, Gwen is defeating her purpose. She'll never have a husband worth his salt in a boy dragged to the altar; fresh out of his parents' home and a college dormitory. A man needs to test himself in the outside world and to achieve some small stake in it in order to develop , the strength, and confidence wo men like in a husbandGwen would find herself quite dis illusioned with a 19-year-old schoolboy husband. - Peter shows that he is torn between his parents and Gwen.
